Description de toilettes de la Maison Gagelin:
Il est difficile, sinon impossible, de décrire les riches ornements, la forme gracieuse, l'ingénieuse disposition de ces modèles ; nous allons cependant tenter cette entreprise, et faire ici la description de quelques manteaux, divers quant à leur destination, mais tous élégants et distingués.
Grand paletot marquis en drap brun doré. Ce modèle est l'un des plus longs de la saison; il couvre la jupe jusqu'à 15 centimètres environ du bord ; des moitiés de pattes, encadrées de taffetas noir, et ornées de velours noir, sont posées de chaque côté depuis le col jusqu'au bas du paletot; elles se'complètent lorsque celui-ci est fermé. Sur chaque côté , à quelque distance de l'entournure de la manche, se trouve une longue patte, retenue par de gros boutons de velours noir, et retenant trois pattes plus petites, disposées en éventail. Les manches, demi-larges, sont également garnies de pattes.
Paletot guide, plus court, en velours noir, garni de fourrure grise. Il est fendu sur les côtés, et entièrement encadré avec une broderie exécutée en soie grise; les poches sont indiquées par une broderie semblable; les manches, demi-larges, sont fendues sur le coude; l'entournure et l'encolure sont indiquées, comme les poches, par une broderie. Le bas de la robe grise , qui dépasse ce paletot, est garni avec un volant étroil tuyauté, surmonté de trois bandes de velours noir lisérées d'orange; entre ces bandes est placé un entre-deux de guipure noire. Sortie de bal Mindha en velours groseille clair, composée de (rois parties. Celle du dos est plissée, et les plis sont réunis et fixés par une large passementerie noire, terminée par deux glands ; les côtés de devant sont unis, et forment d'immenses revers, ornés d'encadrements en riche passementerie noire à jours. Ces revers sont encadrés par une passementerie noire qui remonte sur les épaules et garnit le devant de la sortie de bal.
Robe Diana en pou-de-soie lilas. Jupe à queue, garnie d'un volant surmonté d'une riche chicorée; de grands fers à cheval, figurés par des rubans de velours noir et par une large dentelle blanche, garnissent le tour de la jupe; ils se répètent eu trois rangs sur le devant de la jupe, et sont encadrés par un volant surmonté d'une ruche chicorée. Une ceinture-bretelle, ornée de velours noir et de dentelle blanche, borde le devant du corsage, ouvert par devant, se croise par derrière, et retombe en deux pans ayant chacun, au bas, 40 centimètres de largeur.
Mantelet-écharpe en velours noir, richement brodé, à bords dentelés, garni d'une dentelle de Chantilly, ayant 60 centimètres de hauteur.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to describe the rich ornaments, the graceful form, the ingenious disposition of these models; however, we are going to attempt this enterprise, and describe here a few coats, various as to their destination, but all elegant and distinguished.
Large marquis overcoat in golden brown cloth. This model is one of the longest of the season; it covers the skirt up to about 15 centimeters from the edge; halves of legs, framed in black taffeta, and adorned with black velvet, are placed on each side from the collar to the bottom of the overcoat; they complete each other when the latter is closed. On each side, at some distance from the armhole of the sleeve, is a long tab, held by large black velvet buttons, and retaining three smaller tabs, arranged in a fan. The sleeves, half-wide, are also lined with tabs.
Guide overcoat, shorter, in black velvet, trimmed with gray fur. It is slit at the sides, and fully framed with embroidery executed in gray silk; the pockets are indicated by a similar embroidery; the sleeves, half-wide, are split on the elbow; the seamline and neckline are indicated, like the pockets, by embroidery. The bottom of the gray dress, which goes beyond this overcoat, is trimmed with a narrow ruched flounce, surmounted by three bands of black velvet edged in orange; between these bands is placed an insertion of black guipure.
Mindha ball gown in light currant velvet, made up of three parts. The back part is pleated, and the pleats are joined together and fixed by a wide black trimmings, finished with two tassels; the front sides are united, and form a huge lapels, adorned with frames in rich black openwork trimmings.These lapels are framed by black trimmings that go up on the shoulders and adorn the front of the ball gown.
Diana dress in lilac poult-de-silk. Tailed skirt, trimmed with a flounce topped with rich chicory; large horseshoes, represented by ribbons of black velvet and by wide white lace, adorn the circumference of the skirt; they are repeated in three rows on the front of the skirt, and are framed by a flounce surmounted by a chicory ruche. A strap-belt, adorned with black velvet and white lace, borders the front of the bodice, open in front, crosses behind, and falls in two sections, each of which, at the bottom, is 40 centimeters wide.
Mantelet-scarf in black velvet, richly embroidered, with serrated edges, trimmed with Chantilly lace, 60 centimeters high.
