I wanted to introduce y’all to a Texas-sized mosquito, the gallinipper. I do a “finger for scale” thing frequently, but in this case somebody thought I was offering a free meal. Haaaaaaa NOPE! Getting bit by one of these ladies feels about as painful as getting stuck with a hypodermic needle. Not too pleasant! August 18, 2018
“Mosquito Plant Monster-Man,” a 2012 painting by MidnightInk that has since become associated with the Averasboro Gallinipper.
North Carolina is home to giant mosquitos! These critters, called Gallinippers, are so big and strong that they can saw people's arms off and suck all your blood out. Having lived in the South for about ten years, this makes way too much sense to me. These fuckers are everywhere!
"Gallinipper" (Psorophora ciliata)
...a large species of mosquito (Culicidae) which occurs in eastern and central North America. When compared to other mosquitoes P. ciliats is quite large with individuals boasting wingspans of 7-9 mm! Like other mosquitoes adult female P. ciliata will feed on the bloodmeal of mammals (typically large ruminants) including humans. However unlike other mosquito species P. ciliata larvae are one of the few species whose larvae are predaceous to other mosquito larvae, which are caught by pursiut rather than ambushing like seen in Toxorhynichtes.

Gallinipper (GAL-uh-nip-er)
Noun
1. Informal. any of various insects that sting or bite, especially a large American mosquito, Psorophora ciliata.
Origin: came to English in the late 1600s. Though its origins are uncertain, the second element of the word likely comes from the term nipper, which has referred to an animal that bites since the 1530s.
I just killed a gallinipper (mosquito hawk for ya'll who aren't from the south), and my little sister, the critter-lover, started crying, saying that it was so inhumane of me to kill an innocent soul. So I decided to have a proper send-off for Bartholomew.( that is what my sister named him) So my sister went out to the back yard and picked a handful of weeds, because we had no flowers. And as I dropped Bartholomew into the toilet, I thought maybe I should sing a song. I thought of Amazing Grace or Danny Boy, but then it hit me! Bartholomew was probably a Beyoncé sort of guy. So as he swirled around that porcelain bowl, all that could be heard from outside the bathroom was a very loud and dramatic rendition of "Drunk in Love".
can you...can you just imagine...
My sister sobbing over the toilet
The sound of flushing water filling the air
