Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan leaves Blizzard after 19 years - Gaming News
Jeff Kaplan, the game director for Overwatch, and known as “Papa Jeff” among the game community, has departed Blizzard after 19 years working for the company.
Kaplan made the announcement on the Overwatch blog page, stating that it was “truly the honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to create worlds and heroes for such a passionate audience.”
It was truly the honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to create worlds and heroes for such a passionate audience. I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone at blizzard who supported our games, our game teams and our players. But I want to say a special thanks to the wonderful game developers that shared in the journey of creation with me.
Before his time working on Overwatch, Kaplan was a designer and director on World of Warcraft (and various expansions) – he is perhaps best known for his work on Overwatch though, thanks to his role in presenting many of the community update videos and his appearances in the annual Overwatch Yule Log videos, where he would sit silently in front of a Christmas tree and simply drink from an Overwatch mug.
Help us thank Jeff Kaplan for being the Mercy to our Genji. Thank you for always daring to see the world as it could be.
Also, help us welcome Aaron Keller as Overwatch’s new Game Director. We can’t wait to continue fighting for the future with you.

Kaplan will be replaced by Aaron Keller, who is the assistant director of the game. Keller also left messages of support, stating that “Jeff’s been a great leader, mentor, and friend, and he knows how much we’re going to miss him. I’ve been lucky to work alongside him and the rest of the Overwatch team for many years in building something that continues to inspire people all around the world, and I’m honored to carry the torch forward.”
Overwatch 2’s development is continuing a-pace, though, with Keller noting that Blizzard will be sharing more frequent updates on the game soon.

Doom Eternal director has 'put a lot of thought' into adding a female Slayer

Doom Eternal director has 'put a lot of thought' into adding a female Slayer
The Doomslayer can take on many guises in Doom Eternal. There’s the Classic Doomguy, the Mullet Slayer, the Doomicorn, the Night-mare, even the Purple Pony. One thing the Doomslayer has not been, however, is a woman.
That may change someday. During a recent stream, game director Hugo Martin said that he’s actually thought about how to best incorporate a female Slayer into the series, because he’d want the character to be more than just another skin.
“I’ve thought about it, actually. I think if we did it, I’d want it to be lethal,” Martin said. “I think it’s interesting how it would impact the glory kills, the kind of weapons that she would have, the fighting style—certainly all aggression, absolutely, but a different type of aggression. I would really strive to allow it to impact the gameplay in a way that was meaningful. I’ve definitely put a lot of thought into that.
“When it comes to designing the action, you think about, like, if the Slayer is a Ferrari, then what would a female Slayer be? What would a medieval Slayer be? How would that affect things? What sort of analogies could you draw from that, allow that to influence the experience? So I don’t know. It definitely would be cool.”
That automotive analogy might seem a little odd on the surface, but it’s one that Martin has made previously: He described the Doomslayer in supercar terms in a 2018 interview with PCGamesN, saying, “You can drive a Ferrari 70 mph down a freeway and it’s fun. Drive it 200 mph round a track and it’s also very fun.”
We used a similar metaphor in our review of Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods—Part One, describing the experience as “akin to waking up at the wheel of a Ferrari screaming down the track at 200 mph. It’s precisely as alarming and exhilarating as that sounds.” That’s a good thing, in case there’s any doubt: We scored it 89%, calling it “virtuosic display from id Software.”
The addition of a new Slayer isn’t something that’s likely to happen anytime soon, then, but the idea is at least on the radar. And it’s not like it’d be too much of a narrative stretch to make it happen, either: I’m not a big adherent to the concept of canonical authenticity in my Doom games, but perhaps it’s notable that, in the fiction of Quake 3: Arena, the Doomslayer’s trainer during his time in the Marines was Crash, a woman.
Thanks, VGC.

World of Warcraft's roguelike dungeon is being overhauled so that failing to beat it won't ruin your night
New Post has been published on https://videogaming.newonline.help/world-of-warcrafts-roguelike-dungeon-is-being-overhauled-so-that-failing-to-beat-it-wont-ruin-your-night/
World of Warcraft's roguelike dungeon is being overhauled so that failing to beat it won't ruin your night
Torghast, Tower of the Damned is one of World of Warcraft’s most ambitious features ever. It’s a sprawling, multi-floor dungeon that’s basically a self-contained roguelike. The layout and enemies change each time you explore it, and as you progress to harder floors you accrue wildly over-powered abilities that can turn you into a demon-slaying badass. It’s a lot of fun—unless you fail to kill the final boss, in which case that 45 minutes of effort is thrown out the window and you have nothing to show for it.
“One of the biggest points of feedback we’ve gotten since the release of Shadowlands was that, while the feeling of becoming this powerful wrecking ball going through Torghast and breaking all the rules is super fun, the flipside is that losing in Torghast is one of the worst experiences ever in World of Warcraft,” game director Ion Hazzikostas said during an interview today. “And that’s a problem. That sucks.”
See, Torghast is the primary source of a valuable currency called Soul Ash which is used to power up your Legendary gear. You can only get so much Soul Ash each week, so beating Torghast is something that players have to do if they hope to keep pace with their guildmates and take on harder challenges. But that Soul Ash is only earned if you successfully complete a run of the dungeon, which can take upwards of an hour. Die too many times and you’re booted out to the beginning with nothing, which, I can personally say, is so goddamn miserable it actually made me rage quit for a few days. Hazzikostas agrees, so Torghast is going to get an overhaul in Shadowlands’ next big update, Chains of Domination.
“What we’d like to do is revisit success and failure in Torghast in Chains of Domination,” Hazzikostas said. He explained that in Chains of Domination, Torghast’s death counter is going to be replaced, because the big monster that is in charge of kicking you out of the dungeon when you die too many times is actually a raid boss in the upcoming raid. Since players are going to kill it, it makes sense that the rule it upholds would go away too.
“What if instead we had more of a rating or a score, where it was more of a spectrum, a continuum of success and trying to do better, trying to be more efficient, trying to be faster or have fewer deaths, but you have some reward to show for it?” Hazzikostas said. “You always want to do better, but you’re never leaving empty handed—unless you, like, fail on the first floor and your run ends there, that’s okay.”
It’s a simple fix, but it already sounds way better to me. Unfortunately, Hazzikostas didn’t have many specifics to share, but just knowing that Torghast is getting an overhaul is good news.
“We’ll have more to show when the [Public Test Realm] starts for Chains of Domination. We’re looking forward to a lot of feedback and iteration on this system,” Hazzikostas said. “I think our take on Torghast is that the setting is awesome, the gameplay is awesome, the variety of content and experiences there are awesome, but it needs to be a place where we can offer challenge without frustration and despair if the challenge ends up being too much for you.”
Chains of Domination doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’ll be coming later this year. You can read our interview covering all its most exciting features right here.

Apex Legends Briefly Listed to Launch on Nintendo Switch in February
According to details briefly included in the official Japanese YouTube page for Apex Legends, the game will launch on Nintendo Switch on Feb. 2. Incidentally, that is also the same date that Season 8 of Apex Legends kicks off, and so Switch players would be able to play alongside the start of the new season.
This was apparently never officially announced in English at any point. However, Twitter users have pointed out that other-language versions of the YouTube, including Spanish, Danish, Polish, and Russian, also at one point indicated that Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch will launch on that date. Mention of the date has seemingly since been removed everywhere.
BREAKING: The Japanese version on YouTube states Apex Legends is coming to Switch on February 2.

Apex Legends arrived at last on Steam last year on Nov. 4, alongside the start of Season 7. But developer Respawn Entertainment also delayed the release of the Switch version until this year, citing additional challenges to development and not wanting to rush its rollout.
Season 8, called Mayhem, introduces a new Legend named Fuse. The game’s original map, King’s Canyon, will be changed again. A new weapon also arrives in the form of a lever-action rifle called the 30-30 Repeater.
Game Director Chad Grenier stated that the Switch version of Apex Legends will support cross-platform play and will have full feature parity to match those of other platforms. Respawn has had cross-platform support in beta form since Oct. 6, but perhaps the feature will be complete by the time the Switch version launches.
