Just realised it's a fucking decade this week since I joined glee fandom. I know for basically everyone reading this who had time in glee fandom theirs started significantly earlier than that but still! So wild! It changed my life in so very many ways, thanks to those of y'all who were part of that journey ❤️
some advice from a fandom old
my dudes:
You cannot control what other people enjoy about fandom. Some people latch on to certain characters. Some people latch on to certain ships. Even if it doesn’t make sense. Even if the two characters have never spoken to one another. Even if they’ve only had one interaction. Even if a character is dead. Even if the character has always been dead. Even if a character is a hypothetical thought form given life from fandom. Even if a character only has 5 seconds of screen time. You can’t control what other people enjoy.
Is it annoying? Yes. Is it aggravating? Yes. Does it make you scream “augh why would anyone ship THESE characters when X Y or Z is SO MUCH BETTER” or “this character is PROBLEMATIC and you SHOULDN’T LIKE THEM.” Abso-fucking-lutely!
But guess what?
You are not entitled to dictate what other people enjoy. Fandom is a space where people create what THEY love, and what they choose to spend time on is their business.
That said, if you want to bitch about how much people love X character or like Y ship and they shouldn’t? Fandom is a place for that too. On your blog. Out of the main tag. Putting shit in the main tag is asking for a fight and for drama.
We all have opinions and we are all entitled to those opinions but ultimately you gotta live and let live. Fandom isn’t cake: someone else liking a ship or character you don’t like doesn’t mean there’s less of the thing you love out there--it just means you may have to make it yourself.
In the words of Matt Mercer: don’t forget to love each other, and for christ’s sake have a little fun
I panic a little whenever I see Quodo references in the wild like omg it's breached containment the facebook normies know my sins etc etc even though it's like. undeniable. anyway most of the comments are people listing other more wholesome(?) friendships, but here's some goodies:
are those any of y'all?
some more responses. I'm DYING over that comparison... quark with the palantir. pippin with ferengi ears.
bonus: the Facebook autotranslation for this one tickles me. "a little behind" = he's a butt? idk but they are tickling.
LOL always worth it to check the ao3 bookmarks on my fics every once in a while. thank you that's the goal tbh
who needs AI?? chatGPT whomm??? get you a fandom buddy like @gluecookie who you can ask "I need a reason Quark is mad at Odo" or "what are ways to escape prison?" and they rattle off like eight valid options easy as breathing. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 MY HERO. it's more fun to have friends
the specific joy/pain of having the honor to beta-read some fandom folk's original romance novel manuscript, quickly becoming obsessed with the characters and story (it's modern/university AU quodo, jazzy catnip), and having NO ONE ELSE to fangirl over it with. every so often I email them again to say hey I'm still a lunatic about your blorbos and they say thanks still haven't found a publisher 😩😩. rotating them in my mind!!!!
