Why I think game 3 gets more flack for its handling of race, discrimination, & bias compared to game 5 cause it’s been on my mind a bit
I see a lot of comparisons between game 3 and game 5 (bc they both have themes of racism & discrimination based on ethnicity) and I see a lot of game 3 fans hope for a similar direction to game 5’s writing. Like I’ve seen some Anne fans say they hope she gets a major shift similar to Edgar’s. And as much as I hate to say it, I find that INCREDIBLY unlikely for a few reasons.
From the jump game 3 doesn’t give Ganji the same level of humanization Patricia gets. He was immediately made out to be a sacrificial lamb, but he ends up being a sacrificial lamb for the ppl he aims to protect who happen to be a bunch of white ppl who discriminate against him & treat him poorly. There’s really no benefit for him outside of his kind nature to help them which makes him into a punching bag for lack of a better term. Patricia on the other hand is not the team’s sacrificial lamb & therefore doesn’t have to die to protect ppl who don’t care abt her. That and Patricia is given a chance to defend herself. By giving her that chance to fight back, it portrays her as autonomous (something Ganji is not afforded)
Another key difference is the attack against Patricia not only fails, but is then turned back onto the key attacker, Jose. Kevin drinks the poison to protect Patricia & once they’re safe Vera and Edgar reprimand Jose for what he did. Patricia’s suffering doesn’t define her whole character to the point it kills her the way Ganji’s writing does. Not a single person stands up for Ganji in his group. Again, he’s turned into the narrative’s punching bag.
The last main thing I can think of right now is also just how the general messages play out is completely different. In game 5, they eventually grow past the discrimination (now the writing for that growth can definitely be criticized since it has many flaws, but that would need a different discussion & I don’t wanna get too sidetracked). If Jose’s 2nd letter is anything to go by, eventually the team finds unity and understanding between each other. Simply put, game 5 characters don’t die by their biases which gives the characters a chance at redemption & the chance to explore the humanity of Patricia. The same cannot be said for game 3. The biases in game 3’s writing takes them to their graves with no time for growth, reconciliation, or retribution for the victim. It leaves a bitter taste in an audience member of color’s mouth bc by the end it feels like you just watched an innocent Indian man get tortured for no reason other than white ppl being unable to see past their misconceptions. He gets no satisfying ending for his character and his chance to go home gets snuffed out unfairly.
And before someone says it: it’s not abt if the characters themselves are individually racist, but more so that the writing is inherently racist bc of its horrible treatment of Ganji’s character which many poc (me included) can’t help but feel was done in part bc he is brown and if not then it was a very insensitive way to write a brown character (esp with how few darker skinned characters idv has AND Netease’s history of racism & orientalism)
And that’s not to say game 5 doesn’t have plenty of flaws, trust me it does. However, if you compare game 5’s writing to game 3’s… the difference is staggering
