Artist in Residence, Katie Spragg, has been working at the Garden Museum, London, with the community considering the overlooked beauty of the uninvited plants that grow in the city. Katie describes her current work which combines ceramic objects and installation as creating “momentary experiences that allude to the amazement and wonder of being outside in nature”.
The installation at the Garden Museum included a ceramic Capsella bursa-pastoris (shepherd's purse) which is an annual producing a rosette of leaves with an upright stem of tiny, white flowers followed by heart-shaped seed pods. The display also included the rhizomatous perennial Viola odorata (sweet violet). I particularly liked the way the tenacious root systems of the plants was acknowledged in the art work.
