I don’t consider myself an intolerant person, but my stomach disagrees.
I tempted God today and ate garlic bread sticks and God said, “Here, have some diarrhea for your imprudence.”
But yeah, those bread sticks were so good.
Yooo
Anyone know what i can do to relieve intestinal and stomach pain from a garlic intolerance?
Intolerances/allergies
I’ve gotten a few messages regarding my answer about veganism, specifically about caffeine and garlic intolerance and what happens, how I know etc. so I figured I’d quickly answer!
Garlic intolerance is a real thing, I’ve always had a sensitive tummy with stomach acid and being prone to indigestion etc (runs in the family) so I never knew until one day I tried to peel some while cooking with my mum and the smell made me nauseous for 2 days. We didn’t have things like garlic bread at home (or if we did I’d be allowed to eat upstairs to be away from it) because the smell would make me ill for days (I’ve tried to get better with it and it’s usually fine if other cooking smells are masking it etc now) but I liked garlic bread, so I forgot about it until I was at pizza hut with my sister and my brother’s girlfriend (now fiancee, this was 5 years ago), we ordered garlic bread and because it didn’t smell I was fine with it until I ate some, then I was not fine :L about an hour later towards the end of the meal I was incredibly ill, like if you’ve ever had the flu I was like that, nauseous, my body kept trying to throw up but I’m really phobic so I kept stopping it, stomach cramps like hell, you get the picture it was unpleasant. I won’t die if I eat it and it has to be a lot of it before I get ill but I will be ill for days, so no more garlic bread for me!

Onto caffeine; I never drank anything heavy in caffeine so this one took until I was 15/16 to figure out. The most I would have is tea, which doesn’t have very much in it anyway. I was advised to lower caffeine from my diet when I was diagnosed with my anxiety disorder, and since my mum isn’t really allowed it either it was easy to switch, and I found myself feeling a lot less panicked in the mornings (where I would usually drink caffeinated tea).
Skip forward 6 months, I was out with friends in Costa and forgot that coffee isn’t always caffeine free. Order a drink, forget to ask for no caffeine, I’m halfway through the coffee and I’m shaking like absolute fuck at this point, and realise what’s happened. We go to tesco and I’m still panicky but then I get heart palpitations and nearly pass out, my friend (shout out to Freya) has to walk me to the toilets and sit me on the floor until some of it passes, I didn’t fully feel better until 2 hours later. First (and hopefully last) time of ever having that much caffeine, it was scary as hell. If I drink a full cup of brown soda (which has caffeine in it) or like a regular cup of tea, my heart starts going a little bit unless I sit still but it can get me edgy enough to get anxious so there’s no real point. I won’t die but I will be uncomfortable or potentially have a panic attack which isn’t the most fun.
It feels like I'm a ball of not very well know medical randomness
1. My nose runs when I eat (possibly called Gustatory rhinitis). This doesn’t happen as often as it used to though.
2. I have AphantasIa which is described as the inability to visualise, or not having a ‘mind’s eye’
3. I also have Maladaptive Daydreaming which is a newly coined term for excessive daydreaming. I spend every night, and an increasing portion of the day, in bed talking to myself sort of role playing the different characters I’ve created and 'living’ out their lives. This seems to be taking over my life.
4. I have random tiny fatty lumps on my feet called Piezogenic papules, they kinda 'grow’ when I stand up. It’s gross.
5. Last but not least, I’m intolerant to garlic, which according to the medical profession is a 'rare’ intolerance, and indeed the same goes for those with an allergy to garlic.
Oh and not forgetting that my main eye condition (Glaucoma) is apparently something you’re more likely to get over the age of 40, i was diagnosed at 7.
Whenever garlic is really masked by other flavors is when it’s really bad for me. I don’t realize I’m ingesting as much as I am, so I just keep eating. Now I’m practically bed-ridden I’m in so much pain and so uncomfortable. I was going to do shit today but now I’m basically just going to lay here in bed until I feel mildly okay enough to walk to the couch. Then I’m gonna sit there all day or until this pain fucking stops.
