For most people, finding your soulmate is wonderful! Seeing the color of your soulmate's soul bloom across your skin at first touch is an indescribable feeling, and most people bear their soulmarks with pride.
And Joel did too! ... The first few times.
Sure, having Lizzie's bright pink bloom across his shoulder was the best day of his life, and Jimmy's bright blue across his palm filled a space in his heart he didn't even know was missing. But after that it starts getting ridiculous. Like, Etho? Gem? Bdubs? How many soulmates can a guy even have?
But hey, could've been worse. At least he's not soulmates with Iskall.
It's getting harder and harder to make a cool looking outfit when he's working around this many colours! People need to stop loving him, jeez. Or at least pick complementing colours!

Joel and Gem have been rivals ever since they ran into each other at the third Pokemon gym. Sure, rivals are a bit of a childish thing to be, and they’re both full grown adults now with their own careers, but it’s important that they’re rivals! That’s why they’re always getting in each others ways. It’s why Joel is always at Gem’s gym. It’s why Gem is always in the audience at Joel’s contests. It’s to psych the other out, obviously. Not because they’re in love
It inspires them to grow! So they can always show the other up, they can't be caught slacking.
Not so they can impress each other, no way. They don't work in moves they think the other will like. They're just trying to make their rivalry clear!
