Gender Matters is a really cool project aimed at educating trans and genderqueer youth, as well as parents and teachers. You can read more about Gender Matters HERE! Meninism? Feminism? Who the fuck cares what sex you are? Gender is whats really important.
Response to "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid
In this short story “Girl” Jamaica kincaid shows us the differences between two generations. Her mother has very repressive ideas about what a woman is supposed to be and exactly how one should act.The tone of this story is very stern and rather commanding.Kincaid’s mother feels very strongly about Jamaica listening and following her commands, because multiple times she mentions that if she doesnt she will be protrayed as a “slut”.Although Kincaid isnt really given a chance to rebuttal it is clear that Kincaid doesnt neccessarily agree. The emphasis in which is made in the “Girl” on how a woman must act reiterates the undeniable link between gender and performance. The way in which each gender should carry themselves and the duties they should carry out is based on society’s views. You can see that in every generation what society views to be acceptable is ever changing. If there is one thing that this story makes evident, it is that we are all naturally chained and conscious on how we should act so that we are acceptable to society. -Dominique burton
