If you’re trans, it’s not a requirement to change your style. If you’re MTF you don’t HAVE to start wearing makeup. If you’re FTM you don’t HAVE to stop wearing makeup. If you’re genderfluid like me, you don’t HAVE to adhere to performative femininity or masculinity when you’re feeling a certain way. If you want to do things more traditionally associated with your gender or not you can. Being trans is about being who you are and your gender is yours to do with as you wish.
The Brown Boi Project’s "Freeing Ourselves: A Guide to Health and Self-Love for Brown Bois" (Call #: 362.1086 F876) is a beautifully imagined and practical health guide written for and by masculine of center/transgender/non-binary/gender non-conforming people of color. Packed with photographs, charts, graphs, poems, safer sex information, gender-affirming how-tos; nutritional, herbal and fitness advice this text pairs poignant personal narratives and healthcare histories that focus on the experiences of people of color. By highlighting communities of color's susceptibility to class and racial injustices in healthcare and/or prison industrial complexes "Freeing Ourselves..." examines the health and wellness related impacts of institutional oppression and trauma.
Being non-binary means something different to everyone, so we asked some of the Autostraddle staff to talk about what it means to them. Check out the full roundtable here: http://bit.ly/2Dr7Fj4
