I was thinking about all the ideas I gave surrounding General Ba and I think they can best be summarized like this.

Graves AU

Marshall Liu was never Macaque's biggest fan, but she was Wukong's spouse, and in the Stone Monkey's absence, the title of the Monkey king falls to her.

Upon hearing that the Celestial Realm planned to retaliate on the mountain the generals gather to create a plan. Marshall Liu, who has served the throne from before Wukong was even in it, ask Macaque to hear the future, warn them of what is go come.

She does.

There is a version of this made in CSP but the program hates me and I don't have time to figure out how to finish that there, so you guys get the very niece paper lines 😌.

I will be making a post about the Marshals and Generals along side other important OCs for the Graves AU, but I have yet to color them.

But in the meantime, here is Marshall Liu, she is married to Marshall Ma and the closest thing Wukong ever had to a mother figures..

Some Rewrite the Stars facts that have been dancing in my head that I decided to share before passing out:

-Ma and Ba are in fact mates and wives and raised Wukong together after they found him right after he busted out of his stone egg

-Wukong didn't burst out fully grown in this AU, he popped out around a toddler's age

-Ma is a physical fighter and is usually on the front lines with Wukong and Macaque when defending their territory

-Ba is a more sneaky fighter and prefers gathering intel and sneaking up on her targets(assassin mom for the win)

-Ba is much more likely to spoil Wukong while Ma has to play the mean parent and let him know when he's being an idiot

-Ba and Ma have a room set up in their home specifically for Mk to kidnap him to babysit and spoil

-Wukong complains constantly that Ma is so much nicer to his cub than she was to him, and Ma likes to reply "He's cuter than you ever were"

-Macaque still has anxiety about pleasing Ba and Ma even though he and Wukong have been married for centuries because of past trauma.

-Ba and Ma think Macaque's desperate urge to prove to them he's a good mate and King is both adorable and saddening and go out of their way to spoil him any time they can

-One of Ba and Ma's favorite meals is stewed pig demon and when Wukong eventually brings the Pilgrims to his home he has to explain several times to them he did not bring them a meal to fatten up

-Ma is the only being in the world able to suplex Wukong and actually injure him(slightly, but still)

-Ba scares the absolute shit out of Wukong because she doesn't get mad often, but when she does he knows for a fact he's fucked up royally

-Ao Lie lets Mk and Red Son teeth on his horns because they can't hurt them and he thinks it's cute

-Sandy adores the children and takes every moment he can to be on babysitting duty. He's actually sat out of a couple fights so he could hold the tiny things with awe on his face

-Tripitaka is in a constant state of defending his staff from Mk because the cub is teething and the staff is the perfect width to fit in his mouth

Ok, I have to confess: the Journey to the West PDFs I've been reading are the translations recommended by @journeytothewestresearch on their blog.

I’ve only been able to access the Traditional Chinese text by reading the Marshal Ma blog posts by @journeytothewestresearch.

The translations has this to say about their gender:

JTTW Vol 1 - Anthony C. Yu (2012)

"The Monkey King made the four old monkeys mighty commanders of his troops by appointing the two female monkeys with red buttocks as marshals Ma and Liu, and the two bareback gibbons as generals Beng and Ba. The four mighty commanders, moreover, were entrusted with all matters concerning fortification, pitching camps, reward, and punishment."

@journeytothewestresearch has a blog post about the lack of gendered language in the original JTTW and the etymological reasons for Yu's mistranslation.

Personally, I think the Four Stalwart Generals use the original pronoun "他 tā" with its original genderless connotation.

The monkeys live in the magical Flower Fruit Mountain, mostly isolated from human society, so they wouldn't be aware of how American/European colonization and imperialism screwed up the one of the few progressive things pre-colonial China had.

Besides, since actual animals are incredibly queer, I think Yaoguai are queer, so trans and nonbinary demons are a thing in my BMNG AU.

I love how Sun Wukong has become a queer icon

I'm going to combining the lore and translations, and say that the Marshals Ma 馬 and Liu 流 are transmasc and Generals Beng 崩 and Ba 芭 are non-binary using he/they.

Since Sun Wukong is a good king who literally calls himself Grandfather 爷爷 to his subjects…

The Four Stalwart Generals love and are devoted to their king. It goes beyond the typical loyal solider routine. They know him personally, and that strengths their bond and loyalty. It even outlasts Sun Wukong’s absence, and they always make sure to welcome him home personally.
