my take away from live action atla s2

Currently on episode 5 (s2) and the only comment I have is that this has reminded me that the earth kingdom is full of opps holy crap. Second thought (came to me while I was typing the first sentence), I can’t believe they killed off Jet in Wan Shi Tong’s Spirit Library. I never liked Jet so him being killed off never moved me. My beef with his death in the live action is that they made it selfless, almost sacrificial. The thing is Jet was selfish. He acted like some vigilante who cared about justice when in actuality he used his freedom fighters group to play fetch for him. In the live action (an episode or two before his death) he got mad at his freedom fighters group for trying to steal enough food for everyone on the ferry, mind you they were all fleeing to seek refuge. I understand his beef with the fire nation and why he has a tough exterior but getting mad at them for doing what they're supposed to showed his true colors. Yeah that's my two cents on it all. Going into the last episode now :)

Book 2, Chapter 13: The Drill

In case you’re finding this post just by browsing the tags I’ve used for this post, this is the Watchathon, a blog where I’m hoping to watch an episode of a TV show every weekday, with a short blog post where I write down my thoughts as I watch. Each new thought starts with a hyphen and a bolded first word.

- Like so. Now that the introductions are over with, here’s my thoughts on The Drill.

- I’m not used to seeing a cartoon villain who fully believes that their plan is foolproof, but still wants to take out their opposition just to be safe. Yet, that’s exactly what Azula does here, ordering Mai and Ty Lee to take out the Earthbenders even though the drill can’t be penetrated by Earthbending attacks.

- “Finally, something to do...” Mai’s acting like a student who’s been taken on the most boring field trip ever.

- Even putting aside the whole “twenty minutes left of the episode” thing, General Sung’s confidence is tempting fate like I’m tempted by... I can’t think of a good analogy, but you get the point.

- Feels weird to see Iroh flirting...

- Sokka really is the brains of the operation, ain’t he? Coming up with the plan, and later on coming up with a scheme so they can get schematics of the drill. Gosh, I can’t believe I used to think of him as just the comic relief.

- Nice touch that Toph stayed outside to slow down the drill, because she couldn’t bend inside it. I like when team plans in fiction account for each member’s strengths and weaknesses.

- Even if Jet’s trying to move on, it’s clear that he hasn’t let go of his blind hatred of all things (and people) Fire Nation. Realistic? Yeah. But still somewhat disappointing.

- I guess it never occurred to me that Waterbending could be used to cut things.

- I like seeing Aang use the philosophy behind the bending he learns for reasons unrelated to bending. Like here, when Toph teaches him something which inspires him to weaken the braces and then deliver the final blow, rather than cutting the braces all the way.

- Y’know what, I can understand Mai not wanting to get into the sludge stuff. 

- Another thing that shows how Sokka is better at coming up with plans than any other member of the Gaang is when Katara uses her Waterbending to keep Ty Lee away, and Sokka just about immediately realizes that if Katara keeps it up, then Aang’s “final blow” towards the drill will be all the more effective.

- The first mention of Metalbending, though it’s kinda weird. The way Aang phrases it makes it sound like a thing that already exists but he’s just not capable of himself, rather than a far-off fantasy.

- Creative use of Earthbending, Aang making a gauntlet out of stone.

- I’m pretty sure I said this in a post during Book 1, but I stand by it. Use of the theme music as BGM can make anything cool.

- I like mundane uses of bending, like how the trains are run via Earthbending.

- The irony, is “Team Avatar” actually did catch on. Though, I’m more partial to “Gaang” myself.
