I Guess It's Because It Reminds Them Of Nami
Good old times. Also cats are Nami's theme.

Can I come here to gush about how much I love Genzo from One Piece for a minute and how I especially absolutely adore his relationships with both Nami and Nojiko. He loves his girls so much even though they're troublemakers. Like that's his girls 😭😭😭
Thinking about how when Nami was a baby that she was scared of him and would always get upset and cry when she saw him so he put a pinwheel on his head so she would at least smile at him cause he wanted her to like him and it was so silly but it worked in the end. So he kept wearing that pinwheel because of her cause it made her happy.
Ripped my heart out thinking about how he probably decided to never take it off even after Bellemere's death when it was a miserable time for him and the entire village only because of Nami and Nojiko. It was an especially miserable time for Nami so he kept it on so she would at least smile when she would occasionally visit Cocoyashi cause it used to make her happy when she was younger. Then the only time he took it off was when the Arlong pirates were defeated cause Nami was genuinely happy and smiling so he “didn't need it anymore” He kept that pinwheel on his head which was probably silly looking to everybody else just so Nami could be happy.
Then when Nami got her tattoo redesigned after the fall of Arlong park it was a pinwheel and mikan 🥹🥹🥹. I love them so much.

As I've been proving these past few weeks, I have some critiques for opla season 1 but still, nothing pisses me of more than what they did with Nojiko and Genzo. Like... I can feel the anger in my chest everytime I think about them lmao.
To be honest, I can forgive the decision of Genzo and the village not knowing about Nami's deal because they were pretending in front of her anyway, she didn't know they knew until Arlong betrayed her. But Nojiko is an entire different case and I hate that what she meant for Nami all those years was completely erased. Why, why would you change her past like that when you barely touched the boys' pasts?
It's a decision I can't understand, it doesn't matter how much I think about it, because it doesn't affect the rest of the plot at all. A lot of the things Nojiko says in the manga are here too, but wrapped in vitriol because of that decision. What was the point? What were they trying to achieve with it? I truly don't know. I don't want to talk about it later so I'm saying it now because it fits: I hate the scene of Nojiko attacking Nami when she is trying to dig out the treasure, that's so anti Nojiko I feel I can explode of rage.
Nojiko was Nami's anchor for the past eight years. A reminder of better times, of why she's doing what she's doing. And Nojiko is the best older sister Nami could have: strong and brave but also grounded, the calm to Nami's tempest. She even has the tattoos and they mean nothing in this context (to any possible opla-only people reading, Nojiko got tattooed so Nami would feel better about her own Arlong tattoo). I don't get why they robbed us of the sisters' relationship and I will haunt them for it the rest of my life.
And why did they give Genzo the windmill in the flashbacks if they didn't show us why it's important? They gave another explanation as to why Nami chooses it as a tattoo later on so why bother? But at the same time, if they were going to give it to him anyway, why don't show us how important Genzo truly was for Nami?
I'm in the trenches everytime I try to follow the logic behind this episode and I'm still there two and a half years later.
PS: I know Chioma Umeala has been a target of racist attacks online since she was first announced as Nojiko and I'm going to be very clear: she is an excellent actress and she devoured her role, I love her and would kill every person who has ever said anything bad about her to ensure her happiness. All my problems with opla Nojiko are solely the writers' fault, the actress did absolutely nothing wrong.

Was everything about this girl adorable?
He slid his way around her, letting go of the staff as he did so. It wasn’t gentlemanly behavior to not let the lady have her fighting chance.
“Now Nami - what a beautiful name for a beautiful girl - what’s a woman as lovely as yourself doing in Arlong’s crew?” He asked, taking a few steps back out of her reach.
Sanji put his hands in his pockets, and started to pull out a cigarette. He was barely getting it out of his pocket when the end of a red staff smacked him across the stomach. The impact knocked the wind out of him, and he bent over at the waist with a groan.
“That,” the woman smirked down at him.
He grinned. What a woman.
“I think I’m in love,” he wheezed.
