You know what? I think if so many countries are gonna remake Ghosts, Mike and Alison being different is a quicker way to make the show more fresh and interesting than making the ghosts different. Here’s my list of potential people I’d like to see in their situation.
A lonely loser who spends all day inside playing video games
A family of four (who sees the ghosts? Up to you)
A gay couple
Business partners renovating the house
A melodramatic artist using the house for studio space
Rival inheritors who are forced to move in together (Dani’s castle but better basically)
Someone who moves in with their mysterious long-lost relative
The possibilities are endless. Come on guys.
The German adaptation of Ghosts has been renewed for a second series! 🎉
The description under the bbcstudios.de Instagram post says that they will go into production this summer and see an opportunity to establish the series as a brand in the long term. The whole cast is set to return.
The Captain & Fanny • Claudius & Adelheid ~ Ghosts (BBC) & Ghosts (ARD) ~ 1x01 & 1x02
Watched the first season of the German Version of Ghosts and Claudius has got to be my fav 🥰🥰🥰
One thing I really love about the German Ghosts adaptation is how small, subtle changes create an entirely different dynamic. People keep saying that the ghosts are very close to their original counterparts and that might be true at a first glance but definitely not if you look a little deeper.
So here's a little list of small but important changes I personally like:
Emma and Felix aren't married
This doesn't change their dynamic per se but it means that Felix has no claim to Haus Donnerhall. We see this in episode 6 in particular when they're thinking about selling the house. It's made very clear that this is Emma's decision and hers alone. She's the one signing the contract (or not) and who gets to have the last word. Plus it adds another layer of friction to the debts Felix takes on.
Adelheid's death
Unlike Lady Button, Adelheid stands up to her husband when she catches him with the maid. Their title and wealth come from her side of the family and she threatens to have that taken away from him. Also the fact that her husband cheats with a maid and not the gardener/butler means she doesn't have any personal hangups about same-sex couples.
Urs replacing the Plague Ghosts
As much as I love the Plague Ghosts, giving their role to Urs works really well because it highlights the fact that he's curious and interested in modern technology.
Emma's accident
Not only was it definitely an accident - Urs didn't plan to hurt her - they also created a different cause for it that is then brought back in the finale to create a cliffhanger and a situation the original never properly explored.
Svenni
Svenni is the perfect blend of Pat and Kitty because she combines the best traits of these characters (being helpful, wanting to be Emma's friend and wanting the ghosts to get along) without exhibiting some of the worst (Kitty's obsessive behaviour).
Lotti
The show including Lotti a lot more than the original ever did Jemima is one of my personal favourite changes. Lotti is more than a one-off jumpscare - she feels like part of the house and part of the ghost family, even if most of the ghosts are a little creeped out by her.
Felix's interactions with the ghosts
Felix and the ghosts interact a lot during the first series. He seems to talk to them regularly, informs them of his plans to marry Emma and has found ways of communicating with them (the tablet, the lights). The ghosts in turn follow him around, willingly offer to help him find Ralf's body and make an effort not to ruin the proposal.
The relationships
This is, perhaps, one of the most important changes the German show has made. The interactions between the characters are never quite as mean as they are in the original. They tease and annoy each other, yes, but always in a gentle way that hurts no one's feelings. The ghosts are more than housemates - they're a family. Not only does episode 6 offer a verbal affirmation of that, it also gives us a group hug - something we have never seen in the original show.
Other things that come to mind are: Joachim naughtily adding some aubergines to Emma's spreadsheet vs. Julian getting Mike into actual trouble at work; Friedrich being a calmer, more mature version of Thomas, Griet being more of an Annie than a Mary, Claudius being a much older ghost than the Captain and also speaking a different language ... But this post is already long enough as it is and I think I've made my point.
The German adaptation might resemble the original show at its core but its vibes and character dynamics couldn't be more different.
