the best thing about starop for me is that they both see the good in each other. optimus is no savior, and he knows it. he's flawed. he can be selfish, or angry, or self destructive. he can be wrong. he can be bad. he knows it, and he sees bits of himself in starscream. he sees someone who's so embroiled in his flaws that they're all he can associate with himself, and he wants to help starscream see past that because staying in that mindset will only destroy himself.

and starscream is one of the only people who doesn't see optimus as some hero. he sees optimus for all of his fuckups, all of his flaws, the mech behind primus' blessing. and yet he sees optimus becoming better than himself, and starscream doesn't think that he'll ever be as good as optimus. he doesn't think that he can be swayed from his own nature.

but that won't stop optimus from trying.
