Sorry I meant reverse ghost engagement au stuff, wherein a still-living Skully traveled to the East and picked up a red envelope on the ground with nothing but good intentions of returning it to its rightful owner. . . only to find it contained a dead Yuu's hair and nails, and by picking it up, he basically agreed to be married to a ghost. Whoops.
Yuu's envelope has been lying on the ground so long any relatives who cared about them are dead. People just came to know to avoid the bit of red on the road. Maybe got buried by pebbles or dirt by and by and remained preserved due to Ghost Magic. Maybe someone put a stone over it despite possible disrespect for the dead out of fear it might flutter away and accidentally be picked up by someone. Better the danger you can see. Then one day someone kicked the rock over and Skully stumbled upon it soon after.
Red envelopes typically hold money and are given as gifts. Skully knew that much and thought of asking people around if any dropped it since it looked pristine. Only to get accidentally ghost engaged lol.
Yuu had loving parents. Have not determined the socioeconomic bracket. If they did not bury Yuu in fancy wedding robes they certainly burned an effigy of such an ornate garment so they'd be nice and pretty in death. Yuu told their parents not to bother but was not listened to because their parents did not want their child to be lonely.
What time period is this? Uhhhhhhhhhh. Gave Yuu something like a Qungua bc I liked the look of it. But this is stuff I doodled for April fools didn't think about it too hard.
Magical translation spell go brr.
Yuu's content enough to travel along with Skully since they didn't get to do that much while alive. They keep an eye out for him.
Yuu has told Skully multiple times to just burn the envelope if they're being too inconvenient and that they won't spite him for it. He has refused.
Skully keeps that red envelope in a pouch he wears around his neck and has at some point mused aloud about swallowing the contents so they'd stop asking. Yuu called him an idiot who would poison himself or get indigestion for consuming a corpse.
When Skully's about to ride the ship back West he asks if Yuu is satisfied and if they would like to be laid to rest yet and they say that it would be a pain for him to travel all the way back the road he came just to burn them up in their hometown so basically just take them along since he's carried them this far. They are a tsundere even here.
They never get officially married bc Yuu doesn't want Skully to die a premature death.
Skully did likely introduce Yuu to his parents when he returned home it was very awkward I'm sure.
Have a shenanigans. In the Ghost Engagement au, Skully may be Yuu's fiance as far as spectral marriage rules are concerned and he does care about them a lot, but he also wholeheartedly supports them getting together with any of their nice young living peers.
He's haunting the campus with mistletoe and Yuu's dragging a bouquet's worth around by now as they snatch every sprig that descends ever-so-slowly from an invisible hand between them and whoever they're talking to who is remotely on Skully's "Groom candidates for Yuu" list. He just keeps miraculously producing more of the devilish plants, ready to be goading whisper in the wind.
They manage to hide them from Kalim (with Jamil's help) and enlists Deuce's aid (not without first flustering Deuce with the explanation of the tradition) which keeps any mistletoe out of the other Heartslabyuls' sight. Ace thinks this is hilarious and isn't particularly keen on helping. Rook would be useful with his ability to shoot them right out of Skully's hand if the guy would just stop composing poetry about tragic love between the living and the dead and eulogizing that lovely mistletoe that inspires love with its sacrifice. Epel also thinks it is funny but gets competitive about collecting the most twigs and help because of that mostly. Jack might be of more help if Skully didn't have the other ghosts scattering and replacing the sprigs everywhere for the mischief of the whole thing. Ortho is unfortunately busy trying to drag Idia out into this mistletoe-laden hellscape because exposure to such affectionate acts, no matter how chaste or superficial, could lead to bonding and friendship!
Yuu fails to get the stupid plant away from Sebek' sight before Lilia swoops in. The fae remarks on the tradition and kisses Yuu and Sebek on the nose/cheek before either can do anything about it. Lilia playfully laments about his poor, cute, cold, neglected heart when Yuu and Sebek refuse to return the gesture and Yuu sighs and moves in to kiss his cheek before Skully tries to spin them to face Sebek because no, Yuu, Lilia is too old for you, turn a little to the left-!
Malleus arrives to a mess of human shields and snowballs and mistletoe because the other first-years and perhaps some others were drawn into the commotion. Sebek is conscripted almost immediately into trying to find Skully and Yuu and mistletoe them because Malleus was promised an invitation to his fellow Gargoyle Club members' (hypothetical) wedding (should it occur, which even if it did won't be anytime soon because Yuu would die in the union) and it would please him greatly to see any progress on that front.
In the accidental Ghost Engagement au there is a nonzero chance that Deuce thinks Yuu's last name is Dear or Darling from how often Skully addresses them like "Yuu dear" or "Yuu darling" and because by this point Deuce doesn't know how to ask what their actual surname is without feeling very embarrassed after not knowing a friend's full name after several months or if they even have one. (Deuce tried looking at the name line of returned homeworks and papers but Yuu has not written their full name in a single document in twst for fear of fair folk magic and nobody has called them out for it.)
