Anathema – Internal Landscapes
As one door closes, another opens. Or so the saying goes. Yet the conclusion of the A Natural Disaster (Music For Nations) run saw British Progressive Rock act Anathema complete their second cycle, one that had taken them from Doom (Serenades through The Silent Enigma) through a transitional period through more Progressive and emotional waters (Eternity through to …Disaster including the exceptional Judgement), alone in a room without an opening ahead of them, with apparently limited options. Externally, at least, the future of the band seemed shrouded, and their continued existence, let alone any future success, appeared unlikely. Yet come 2008 and the rebranding of Kscope as a sister-label to Anathema’s former home, Peaceville Records, with a self-established remit to focus on Progressive, atmospheric, emotional and post-Rock artists, and so the perfect home, a place of trust to nurture and rebuild the band, was established. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-80LdBCDXc 2018 has seen Kscope celebrate the first decade of their existence with a series of events, including Anathema’s ambient acoustic shows, and while The Pineapple Thief may be the first official Kscope release, Anathema’s Hindsight wasn’t far behind; a reimagining of tracks that had appeared on previous albums, and from that refresh, the perfect relationship was launched. Internal Landscapes is a celebration of that relationship, featuring the very best tracks of a run of albums that includes their finest. Shining light from 2014’s Distant Satellites, the eponymous song ‘anathema’ opens proceedings, setting the tone for seventy-eight minutes of beautiful, moving, honest music that spends equal time on each of Anathema’s Kscope albums while also finding room to include a stirring ‘J’ai Fait Une Promesse’ from the orchestral reworking album Falling Deeper, and closing with the title track of the release, perhaps the bands finest and most emotive musical moment. The earnest and exceptional We’re Here Because We’re Here (2010) and Weather Systems (2012) - a pairing of outstanding, deep, emotional albums - form the backbone of this compilation, with the breezy ‘Thin Air’, the expressive ‘Dreaming Light’ (both of which appeared on my personal wedding playlist), and the deeply powerful ‘Untouchable’ (Parts 1 and 2) standing strong, and managing to top even the outstanding moments of music that surround them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av6sVWXeCWQ While a compilation album is a tough sell in today’s playlist society (and this would make one heaven of a playlist), both the focus and the reason for the celebration are justified and worthy. Anathema is one of Britain’s most vulnerable, stunning, sensitive (and underrated in terms of commercial success) rock bands - progressive, atmospheric or otherwise - and this collection of songs proves the depth of their brilliance over a ten year period that encapsulates their third phase. 2017’s The Optimist felt like a moving on, perhaps, into a fourth cycle of evolution with its cinematic scope, and as such, Internal Landscapes is the perfect, gentle closing of the door on a highly successful ten year period. Only this time there is a golden path, wide open with shining lights guiding the way, and waiting for them to step boldly onwards… 9.0/10 STEVE TOVEY Read the full article
Soulfly – Ritual
There have been eleven Soulfly albums. Eleven! In total, frontman and four-string guitarist Max Cavalera has released 22 albums in just over 30 years. That man is prolific as he is unwavering, and with new album Ritual (Nuclear Blast), he continues to shred and growl in the same way he always has. Recent years have seen Max & Co. jumping away from their Nu-Metal roots and embrace a heavier sound more akin to early Sepultura. The results may well have pleased old Death Metallers who never appreciated jumping da fuck up, but the results have been variable in quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3uSTOQlDXc With Ritual, there’s largely more of the same, with the odd nod to the catchy simplicity and tribal music of albums gone by. The opening title track, with its very 'Prophecy'-like opening, is the closest the album gets to the bouncing early days, and is probably its most satisfying moment. ‘Dead Behind The Eyes’ features Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe, and could easily have been a lost track from LOG’s own back catalogue; chugging riffs, furious drums, with melodic guitar bridges. Guitarist Marc Rizzo continues to turn out shredding riffs and Max’s vocals sound as raw as ever. Soulfly have always been a band worth seeing live and this screams crowd-pleasing circle pits and moshing inducer. The main problem with Soulfly albums have maintained consistency throughout a whole album, and Ritual sags in the middle with some perfectly passable if instantly forgettable numbers. It does, however, pick up the quality again in the latter third. ‘Blood On The Street’ has a brief tribute to the bands interest in World music with pleasing flute and tribal drum combo, before segueing into a punky thrash number with a furious Lamb of God vibe. ‘Bite the Bullet’ has an excellent flurry of a solo for an opener before tucking into another slice of feral Thrash. ‘Feedback!’ is something of an oddity; a punky rock and roller that could pass for a Motörhead cover, yet somehow still works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2LHZs7xx-w The mandatory instrumental slow jam is present and correct, but the intro to ‘XI’ sounds eerie similar to the intro of Metallica’s ‘One’ with some extra World music thrown over the top. There’s plenty of enjoyable moments on here – and there are times it’s heavy as balls – but there’s a distinct lack of standout memorable moments; while Nu-Metal Max may have not been everyone’s cup of tea, at least early Soulfly had hooks. Ritual is not a classic, but has enough moments to satisfy those in need of some battering metal. 7.0/10 DAN SWINHOE Read the full article
Fangclub - True Love
Love and music go hand in hand like any other perfect pair. A song can be reminiscent of your first kiss, first heartbreak even your love for life. True Love (Vertigo), the five-track EP by Irish trio, Fangclub emphasizes on the theme and delivers for those that miss and love the alternative nostalgia of the nineties. Fanglub's first self-titled debut was a major success in the UK and this EP continues to prove their talent. Kicking off with 'Knife' it immediately catches your attention as the track screams nostalgic vibes reminiscent of a vibrant Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. As in 'Heart Is A Landmine', the melody and the heaviness of the bass lines create a balance for the rest of the album. When the bridge kicks in and frontman, Steven King sings “If you did it once, you'll do it again” you will definitely be playing the song again and again. The guitar work on the EP is creatively written to hook you in with lively riffs and groovy melodies that keep you entertained. 'Smother' reflects that and mimics the first song with a catchy, dance-like riff that will have you swaying along. 'Sweater Forever' is a somber track that will have you singing every word; the Weezer vibes on the track sound radio friendly, but without a dull moment as it's precisely constructed with every rhythm fitting so well. Once the last track, 'High' ends you are feeling wanting more from this band. Not only have they mastered the perfect sample of their chops, they have ignited a curiosity of where can they take the genre that is eager to make a comeback as pure as it can get. Alternative rock hasn't seen this kind of life since MTV played music videos. And if Fangclub were playing around the theme of love, you will be falling in love with the Irish trio. 9.0/10 CYNTHIA JO Read the full article
