Thursday Tales: The Salem Ghost Ship Recounted by the Rev. Cotton Mather, best known for his writings upon Witchcraft and the supernatural, the Salem Ghost Ship, tells of a sea tragedy taking place off Salem Massachusetts around 1675, and was told by the God fearing congregation to prove that evil in the form of superstition stalked the land. Upon the day the tale is told, a large group of people await to board the ship named ‘Noah’s Dove’ bound for England. While the ship boards, a couple, a man and a woman appear that are not known to the close knit and fearful population of Salem; they also are waiting to board the ship, but the woman is seen to be crying. As the couple appear a Raven flies above the crowd, and cycling round the ship and the crowd lands on the town clock, which shifts its hands forward forward ten minutes. This alongside the strange couple's appearance causes a stir amongst those waiting to board, a sign they believe has been seen, and relatives waiting to say goodbye, begin to warn their friends and loved ones against boarding. As the strange couple boards, alongside those who choose to ignore the portent, and the ship casts off its lines, a strong breeze instantly appears, taking the ship with speed out to sea. The breeze quickly foments into a storm, with hail, thunder and lightning lashing the ship, and the town, for three solid days; with the puritan inhabitants sure that the ‘Noah's Dove’, and all those abroad have succumbed to the storm. On the fourth day, the storm begins to recede, and sunlight struggles to be seen upon the wharf, drawing crowds to the spectacle of the same ship, fighting against the slowly diminishing wind, to immediately make land, (Continued in the comments). #salemmassachusetts #newenglandhistory #ghostships #ghostship #ghostshipfire #cottonmather #salemma #salem #ghoststories #ghosttales #ghost #ghosts #puritan #puritans #superstition #superstitions #newenglandlife #historicaltales #historicalstories #historystory #salemghosttour #thepalatine #ghosthistory #ghostlegends #newenglandfolk #folklore #strangehistory #gothictales #gothichistory #blockisland https://www.instagram.com/p/CPqf1LansVO/?utm_medium=tumblr
