headphones are taken off of his ears slowly, hands shaking slightly as he pushes his phone to the stand next to his hospital bed. the smile that forms on his features is an easy one ------ it always is when she’s there. and it’s rare for him lately; the past few months have been all about recovery, but he doesn’t know exactly what it is he’s recovering from. physically, the proof is all around him, pounding through his head every second of the day. but mentally, there are too many gaps to be filled ------ he hasn’t put it all together yet, hasn’t remembered WHY he did what he did. it makes things simple right now; he can focus on trying to get better before facing everyone again as he’s armed with his new disability. it will catch up to him soon, he knows that, but at least he can focus on just this for now.
❝ i told you not to come back unless you’re sneaking in the good shit, ❞ he teases, grin growing as he already feels LIGHTER now that she’s here with him. she doesn’t look at him like he’s fragile, not the way his mother does with an expression full of pity and his father wearing one of his own masked with guilt ( one alex is all too familiar with himself. ) jess just treats him like a normal person, not some guy who has been stuck in a hospital bed for the past five months, and that’s why he always makes sure he has time for her. without her, he doesn’t know how far he would be through his recovery, nor does he knows if he would be trying so hard to get better. all he knows is that she’s someone he needs at his side. ❝ i think my mom’s trying to poison me with her organic diet. that’s fucked, right? if i don’t get sugar soon, this cane is going to be doing some damage. ❞
jokes aside, his hands move to the bed, working to push himself up to sit up straigher. it’s not an easy task, small grunts falling from his lips as he works to find balance for himself. it’s something he has been practicing ( something he hopes she notices, that validation necessary for his recovery too. ) once sitting up straight, he slides his body to one side of the hospital bed, his free hand moving to pat down on the space next to him, one he has reserved for her. ❝ what do you have for me today, davis? tell me all about the world outside of this bright ass room of doom. ❞
