"Everyone deserves someone who can speak their language." - Gitling (Hyphen), 2023
No one ever told Sophia how quickly you could stop dreaming in your first language.
//
Manon would like to believe (although Dani and others would disagree) that she can speak four, maybe even five languages. Six if counting the Korean lessons Sophia made them all take for Yoonchae. Another one won’t hurt.
i didn't expect the maphinz!gitling au to get so much love omg i am so so attached to this story and to have both filo and non-filo readers appreciate it makes my heart warm. spoiler alert beyond this part !! if you haven't read the fic, u can read it here first.
as a treat, here's an unfinished alternate scene i wrote before i came up with the ending. in this one, manon tells sophia about her tagalog lessons earlier in the story. i ended up really loving how i wrote it in the end, but this scene was so fun to write.
another tidbit about the writing process hehe here are some of the songs i considered for sophia to sing at the end:
huwag muna tayong umuwi by bini
huling sandali by december avenue
panalangin by apo hiking society
ligaya by eraserheads
and recently, ngiti by ronnie liang came on shuffle too and i thought about them hahhaha.
i chose eroplanong papel by december avenue because the line "kailangan kong isigaw, ako'y iyong iyo" was so direct that if you understood tagalog, what sophia was trying to say was very very clear and undeniable. in my head, manon couldn't doubt it one bit. it's also so ironic because the lyrics say that she needs to shout her feelings out loud, but in reality, she feels like she can't. so she does so in a language that she thinks manon can't understand. because at least she's able to say it and put it out into the universe in a way, and she can stay forever hoping that it will reach manon somehow.
i just finished reading your new maphinz fic — is it too early to say na mahal na ata kita? charot but oh my god, sobrang galing mo!!! you perfectly captured what it’s like to love someone from a completely different culture. it’s so beautiful and i loved manon’s voice here so much. like nothing gets me more than someone saying “i love you” in the effort it takes to learn your words
i’m struggling to put my thoughts into words basta ang alam ko fan na fan mo ako user firecrackeronacrowdedstreet walang halong biro
what if umiyak ako!! grabe i didn't expect people to read it so fast and express their love for the fic HUHU thank you so much for your message. i have been writing this for weeks and i got a bit anxious like what if the filo maphinz don't like it HAHAH but im so so happy you guys did tho. learning an entire language just to understand someone better, no matter how futile it can be, is just so so romantic to me. thank you so much for sending me a message tumblr user manzrad <3 made my day
