haven't seen anyone talk about this yet so you bet I'm gonna
thinking about Avery after those 13 hours at the church, placing flowers, breaking ferns, moving water, and drowning.
thinking about him seeing the signs and immediately falling to his knees and coughing up the water in his lungs, because before, he just let it sit there.
thinking about how wretched it would feel, the weight of his limbs, of his drenched clothing, the scratches on his hands from tearing up flowers, the fog in his mind
thinking about him finally snapping out of it and sobbing, because everything is too much and he's so tired and yet he needs to keep going, he needs to find d3rlord.
thinking about him, in this exhausted state, punching at netherite with his bare hands until it breaks
thinking about him finally coming face to face with Derek and just collapsing into a hug with him because it has been a hellish 15 hours and he just needs a moment. just a moment of peace.
anyway I love my minecraft critters. go watch searching for/destroying a world that doesn't exist, it's very good
i'm going to go in the order maruu gave in this message:
GRIAN: DEATH
We start with Grian. The simplified symbolism of the card Death is change and transition, that's the main focus of the card. death sounds way more aggressive and intimidating than it actually is. Instead of it being an omen or bad fortune, it symbolizes a new beginning, a fresh start, letting go of the past to create a new future. But reversed, it means the opposite. fear of change, staying in the same harmful cycles, decaying.
In Grian, we see a lot of these fresh starts and new beginnings. We don't know much about his backstory yet, but what we do know is that Sparrow found him at 17 and basically gave him a new start. Being with Deryn and Sparrow allowed him to figure out who he was and what he wanted, he chose a new name, he started over.
In the future, we'll probably see more of him changing and evolving (heh), adapting to his situations and finding new starts. We know CG is going to make a resurgence sometime soon, and she's probably going to have a new design thanks to the scar Grian got from the arrow in MS. But, we also have the reverse side of the card to think about.
Grian is very fixed in his ways, very resistant to change. He worries about Jimmy and his efforts to make mutants more accepted within the school because he doesn't think change is possible, or at the very least, thinks trying to make a change will hurt him. I also have a feeling this relationship strategy he's playing out with HG is going to cause him to fall into some negative cycles, dragging him deeper and deeper until he can't escape. Either way, he's starting some form of cycle with HG that will either end positively or negatively, and judging by how many more volumes of ddvau there are left....i can't imagine it being very positive.
my big theory is that i think Grian is going to fall back into a negative habit, whether as CG or as Grian, and it's going to hurt the people he loves around him because he can't move on
SCAR: STRENGTH
The simplified meaning of this card is exactly as it sounds, though instead of it being an outer strength, it's more of an inner strength. Confidence, bravery, compassion, all very strong traits. Reversed, it means the opposite. Self doubt, lack of confidence, cowardice.
With Scar, it feels a little bit like night and day. As HG, he is the upright Strength. He's filled with self-confidence, he's powerful, he is everything he wants to be and more. He isn't restricted by his disability, he's saving people, his name is "Hotguy". He is so incredibly powerful, and with that comes all of the confidence he needs.
but the moment that mask is taken away from him, he becomes Scar. He feels weak, unable to fend for himself, confined to his wheelchair or crutches or cane. His confidence is gone. We see that a ton when he goes to painting night. He's exhausted, drained of any confidence. He's more withdrawn (though that could be more about what happened with MS than his general attitude as Scar), and he struggles to find where he fits in as his civilian persona.
with Scar, my theory is that over time, we're going to see him more and more in his HG persona, leaving behind his civilian self. By stepping into that confident exterior, he's actually showing a lot of cowardice, because he's unwilling to face his insecurities as Scar. I predict he's going to have a massive identity crisis later in the series, where he doesn't know whether or not he's HG or Scar, or which one is actually him.
PEARL: THE FOOL
The fool again sounds more negative than it actually means. It really means a form of innocence, curiosity, an eagerness to understand the world around them. It symbolizes new beginnings, adventures, spontaneity. In its reversed form, it means carelessness, recklessness, and naivety.
We haven't seen a lot of Pearl yet in ddvau, so I can't analyze her character quite as well, but I can certainly make some predictions. Pearl is an independant journalist, determined to find the truth behind things, no matter what it takes. She's an incredibly headstrong character, she leads with her heart, and she will not let anything get in her way. But in this eagerness to learn and discover, she can become distracted, putting herself (and potentially her team) in unnecessary or avoidable danger.
overall, i think pearl is going to do something incredibly reckless and get both her and tango into trouble (going based off of bonus art and concept art), most likely by poking into the Waytes, but I don't have anything concrete for that
MARTYN: JUSTICE
Now this one is absolutely fascinating to me, the Justice card holds a lot of symbolism and to give it to Martyn....hmmmm. Justice is similar to how it sounds. It's about cause and effect, accountability, the consequences of your actions. But reversed, it means unfairness, corruption, retribution, even revenge.
Again, we haven't seen a ton of Martyn yet, and I'm waiting on more bits and pieces. But as a big Lacy truther, this feels veeeeeryyy applicable. But before I go into that, I want to talk about what this potentially means for Martyn. Martyn seems to be a very self-righteous character. He believes in a strict justice system, that people should get what they deserve, and there may be an element of him trying to uphold those beliefs. But he's also angry, bitter over something that happened to him that he believes was unjust. He holds that in his heart, and it drives a lot of his actions.
I've always been on and off on whether or not Martyn could be the mimic, but this feels like a potential pointer towards that, so I'll be keeping an eye on him. even if he's not the mimic, Martyn is definitely going to be some kind of obstacle at some point in the story, because he believes he is deserving of something that he didn't get or because he believes that there is justice that needs to be inacted and that is on his hands.
GEM: THE CHARIOT
The simplified meaning of this is: drive, ambition, determination, and control. Moving towards your goals without letting anything stand in your way. It lines up nicely with the Strength card, as it tends to lead to more self-confidence and courage in one's self. The reversed meaning is losing control, feeling powerless, having obstacles in your way.
Gem was originally not intended to be a main character, if I remember correctly, so this is interesting to me to see how her character lines up with the card. She is clearly a very strong character, very determined, but she also seems to get frustrated easily. She takes out this frustration with boxing, but there's still something lingering beneath the surface. She needs to be in charge of her situations, and with HG showing up all of the time at the hospital, she feels a level of lost control. She can't stop HG from showing up, not unless he does something, and it drives her insane knowing that he's an element that she can't control.
i don't really have any ideas on where this might take her in the future, maybe she comes across some obstacles that she can't overcome and it crushes her self-confidence, or maybe she becomes an obstacle herself. I'm not sure yet, I would have to see more of her character to start figuring out where that might lead
JIMMY: THE STAR
I love jimmy so so so much, and so I got incredibly excited when I saw that he has the Star, because my card just so happens to be the Star as well. Anyway, the symbolism for the star is hope, positivity, and healing, and the reverse is despair and negativity.
Jimmy is a character fueled by hope and positivity. He is the most positive character we've seen so far (excpet for maybe bdubs) and he is almost always smiling or making others smile. He carries himself with a light that brightens other people and he encourages them to be positive as well. Even in dark times, he is always optimistic, looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and constantly pushing towards it.
however. While this is an intrinsic part of his character, he is also falling apart on the inside. He is pushing himself so hard, trying so hard to be positive both for himself and for others, that it's driving him into the ground. He's stressed almost constantly, throwing himself into his work to try and improve the world, and the more he fails, the more hopeless he feels. He puts on a brave face, and most of the time, it all works out in the end, but those times in which he isn't sure he'll succeed are the most hopeless and despairing he feels.
basically: while he's a symbol of hope to everyone around him, he struggles to maintain it for himself.
I think Jimmy is going to run himself into the ground trying to keep up this brave face. He's going to push himself harder and harder to be the perfect, optimistic symbol of hope that he's going to burn out, and burn out hard. He might already be burning out, and that's why he's being potentially targeted by the weird purple thing we saw when he got home from the hospital. My poor baby boy is going to go through the horrors, I already know it.
TANGO: THE MOON
This card tends to be one of the more negative ones overall, so buckle up, cause Tango is going to have a rough time. The symbolism for the moon is illusion, uncertainty, secrets, intuition, and the reverse is fear, anxiety, clarity, and misunderstanding.
This poor guy is struggling. He's anxious, he isn't sure of where he stands, he's lost his position in the labs and he doesn't know where he's going. The path is dark, and the light of the moon is only making the shadows more confusing. However, he also trusts his gut, which
can lead to both good and bad. He falls into misunderstandings often because of it, but it also leads him to the truth, giving him a sort of wild card energy. He might be right, he might be wrong, but he'll trust his gut regardless.
There's also a level of deception and secrecy to the card that I'm not sure whether or not it applies, but if it does, I get the sense that Tango is going to have to do a lot of cover up, most likely for Pearl. He's the one that keeps them out of trouble as they dig deeper and deeper into Pearl's investigation, and that only makes him more anxious
that's about all i have for tango as of yet. I do think he's going to do something stupid in the future because he leaned too hard on his intuition, or he's going to misunderstand something (maybe his relationship with Jimmy?) and cause even more problems for himself and others.
THE MIMIC: JUDGEMENT
Oh boy. This one means purpose, reckoning, awakening, and reversed means self-loathing, failure to learn lessons, and lack of self-awareness.
What I can gather from this is that the Mimic believes themself to be an impliment of Justice. They have a purpose, and that is through serving the Waytes. They are the reckoning, the hammer, and they follow through on their job flawlessly. But whoever is beneath the mask is trapped in a cycle. If I didn't know any better, I would have chalked Scar up as the Mimic, based off of their similiarities. I think the Mimic is going to be a parallel to Scar and his struggles, maybe even what causes him to have his identity crisis. The Mimic is driven by a need to prove themself, because if they don't have a purpose, then they are worth nothing.
This, more than anything, leads me to believe that Martyn is the Mimic, or at the very least, has strong ties to the Mimic. Maybe it's too easy to say that he's the mimic, and maybe the timeline is a bit wonky with Martyn being at the airport, but something about the drive, the purpose, everything just seems to line up just right. Martyn believes strongly in justice, the Mimic implements it.
my personal theory is that the Mimic will become their own downfall because of self-loathing and that desire to prove themself.
