There are some nautical-savvy people on here... Is this a fishing float? I found it in an antique shop for a really good price.

New ‘Witch Balls’ in the Journeytree Etsy Shop....
These follow in an ancient coastal tradition and folk custom of hanging reflective hollow glass floats in the eastern window of homes to protect the house & household from evil spirits and harmful spells. They are a form of 'apotropaic magic': superstitious beliefs and practices used by everyday folks throughout history to grant protection and turn away evil intent. I have constructed these Witch Balls from antique hand-blown glass fishing floats, suspended in a ‘net’ of natural cotton thread. Each is unique, individual and painstakingly hand-crafted. Every knot I have knotted with the intent to grant protection and prosperity to the owner.
