I started taking glucosamine about a week ago, as I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis.
Shockingly, my pain factor has decreased significantly since then. Like to an extent I didn’t think possible.
I’m still in a lot of pain and I’m still sick, but it’s significant enough to tell.
What are your opinions on dasquin/cartrophen type medications for arthritis? I know they’ve really helped my seniors, but was wondering how widespread their use is and what vets think of them.
gettingvetted here.
Dasuquin/cosequin and other oral glucosamine/chondroitin supplements are used by vets worldwide. I use Dasquin for one of my cats. I’ve not heard of Cartrophen but a brief Google search is telling me that it is along the same lines as Adequan and Legend, and all three brands are injectable supplements intended to decrease joint inflammation in various ways. Adequan is used regularly for both dogs/cats and horses in the US and seems to have good results. None of these should really be used as the only therapy if arthritis already exists, they should just be complementary therapy (for example, my cat on Dasuquin is also on Gabapentin).
Ferox here.
We use Cartrophen (Pentosan Polysulphate, you’ll find more info looking for pentosan than for cartrophen, and it’s not to be confused with Carprofen) quite a lot, both for osteoarthritis and after joint surgery.
Overall I’m pretty happy with them as a secondary therapy for arthritis (as in, you start them on pain relief at the same time as starting cartrophen). Some arthritic patients can be maintained on cartrophen only for a while, but it’s very variable. Clinically it seems to either work very, very well, or not at all. It seems to do bugger all for spinal arthritis cases.
The greyhound vets also love pentosan.

Do you take glucosamine supplements to reduce joint pain and stiffness? You’re not alone if you do. According to a 2007 survey, nearly 20 percent of U.S. adults take glucosamine to prevent or treat pain from osteoarthritis, back pain and other conditions.
The evidence to support the use of glucosamine for joint pain is thin, but a large new study in The BMJ suggests regular use of the supplement can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Researchers at Tulane University analyzed 7 years of extensive health data for almost half a million adults aged 40 to 69 enrolled in the UK Biobank study. Those who regularly took glucosamine were about 15% less likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke.
Glucosamine occurs naturally in the fluid around joints and plays an importantly role in building cartilage. Glucosamine is extracted from the shells of shellfish and often combined in supplements with chondroitin, a similar substance that is also found in joints.
People who took glucosamine in the BMJ study were more likely to be women, older, non-smokers, more physically active, eat healthier diets and take other supplements. (Read more at link)

Dietary Supplement Dampens Brain Hyperexcitability Seen in Epilepsy
Seizure disorders -- including epilepsy -- are associated with pathological hyperexcitability in brain neurons. Unfortunately, there are limited available treatments that can prevent this hyperexcitability. However, University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers have found that inducing a biochemical alteration in brain proteins via the dietary supplement glucosamine was able to rapidly dampen that pathological hyperexcitability in rat and mouse models.
The research is in Journal of Neuroscience. (full access paywall)
