The Great Wall
As I lean my weary bones
against a cut stone wall,
what in the world, I wonder,
is the greatest force of all?
Is it soil behind the stones
that, since the wall was built,
has over time heaved up and down
to make the structure tilt?
Is it water from the sky
that fell upon its back,
and seeped into the smallest holes
that caused the seams to crack?
Is it plants the grew within
the cracks between the blocks,
turning a once mighty wall
into a pile of rocks?
Or is it man who built the thing
where once was open space,
who lifted, cut, and fit the stones
to put the wall in place?
Or is the God who made the rain,
the rocks within the wall,
the soil, the plants, and all of us,
the greatest force of all?
