Syria has no legitimate claim to the Golan Heights, even from a purely military perspective. As far as I am concerned, the land has, much like the rest of Israel, a historic Jewish presence for millennia. It was only relinquished because of Greek, Islamic, Turkish, and eventually Syrian attacks on the region. Today, mostly Alawites and Druze live there, along with Jews. Handing this piece of history over to Syria is nothing short of insanity. Israel has tried land for peace many times, and no peace has resulted.
