No filter! No fancy camera! Just a smart phone and the occasional miraculous perfectly timed morning light that gilds whatever gift of nature makes it to my breakfast cutting board. Isn’t it amazing that something so sweet-fruity-caramel-juicy, soft-yet-crisp, and so elegantly shaped, grows on trees? Trees charge nothing for this. It is the fulfillment of their lives, stretching their branches toward the sun, buds opening into flowers, which then swell at their bases with all the DNA for another tree in each glossy seed. And then the tree works to move nutrients and energy to that swelling bud, a delicious package for those seeds, meant to appeal to us, the humble undeserving mammal. The orchard keeper cares for the trees and the land they grow out of, they gather the ripening fruits, and we pay them for that effort. But make no mistake, this beautiful wonder is not a commodity. It is a gift of the earth, just like every other thing that supports our lives on this planet. . For those of you following my feed, Ruthie is resting comfortably this evening, hopefully on her way to healing. Her test was negative for pancreatitis. We’re waiting on another result, a test for parasites. Jim has been under the weather all day, but slowly improving. He’s asleep on the couch as I write this. And I am somehow nowhere near as tired as I should be after such a long sleepless night and the busy day that followed. All is imperfect, yet all is well.
