Yet more evidence for my theory that Jess DID listen to Rory's answering machine message (or at least "coincidentally" got his act together soon afterward): in addition to Lorelai telling Luke that Jess is hanging out with Rory all the time every weekend (and therefore not working at Walmart then), during the "old, agoraphobic couple" scene, it's revealed that they're planning to watch a movie (Almost Famous) tonight, watched Ed Wood LAST night, and are watching Saturday Night Fever TOMORROW. Heya folks! Springin’ Chip back with chipper tidings and to say Happy Independence Day! Now, to be clear and in case it wasn’t obvious, I’m a canine, and therefore I really don’t know what the hell ‘time’ or ‘July 4th’ even is. Apparently, it’s one day to relax, celebrate and remember history. As a page mascot, it’s my job to spread joy and enthusiasm about pretty much everything regardless of whether I want to broach the topic or not! So instead of using this post to shit all over our politically divided modern America, which I’ll leave to pretty much everyone else on this platform, I’m gonna tell you a few things about what I like about it quickly, lest we forget that there are benefits to this land!

I LIKE living in a multicultural country, in fact, I can’t even imagine what it’s like living in an ethnocentric monoculture! I like how BIG this place is and how if you want a change of pace or lifestyle, you can just move in pretty much any direction and start your life over again! I like all the natural beauty, from coast to coast this is a GORGEOUS place that I just want to sniff and pee all over! I like our positive technological momentum. I enjoy our entertainment options, our excessive access to resources like food and fuel, and I like how we’re still free enough to think about anything the way that we want, paint what we want, craft what we want, make the music we want, etc., etc. I like the wildlife, how most American cities look from afar and especially how they look at night, road trips, access to the internet, classic diners… I could go on! If you wanna bitch and waffle about living in a country where you (currently) DON’T get literally machine gunned down or run over by tanks when you merely protest, go ahead and do that on your own page. I can’t imagine wanting to call anywhere else home, and I’m glad to be in America. I’m so glad I’m positively rolling in the grass! I hope you have a great long weekend, assuming you have a long weekend. Use it to be thoughtful, supportive and productive, as the very best Americans have always been! Additionally, feel free to unfollow this page if you find yourself even remotely salty about this one little holiday post and enjoy your self-imposed salt mines! I’m 100% sure that touching, tasting and literally inhaling/exhaling salt all the time is wonderful for your mental health and ability to maintain healthy and long-lasting relationships!

Oh, and th3-0bjectivist just instructed me to give you my normal contractually obligated page update! We’ve got a few more abstract background paintings coming within the next six weeks or so. After that, we’re going to be doing a yearly SPACE ART WEEK where everything on this page (art, music, images) becomes suddenly space themed to serve as a transitional period to give us a bit more time to generate quality art and writing. In the weeks following and until the end of 2025, it’s STORY TIME! You’re gonna get fully realized fantasy-themed paintings, poetic written lore, and maybe a few concept drawings for the post-apocalyptic fantasy story th3-0 is currently working on. Beyond that, we’re going to continue to deliver a lot of obscure music this year, as the theme seems to be gaining some momentum. We’ve got a lot more artsy pages to plug, and a lot more thoughtful/humorous pee-in-your-pants, knee-slappin’ memes to reblog.

At this point, I am done with pretending I did not say "I told you so" when it comes to pathetic "man-child" men in the media ravaging the stories that empowered women. Yes (enter a gasp here), even if those stories had flaws and their own issues.

There is a reason media geared towards women and girls had cultural impact and gave women inspiration amidst the daily oppression and suffering.

And then there came men like Chris Sonnenburg because Disney's multimillion corporate selves chose to seek out, employ and give the power to those men. The men hellbent on exacting revenge on "pretty boys", real and fictional, who damaged their fragile egos. Even though the revenge those men really are out for is geared towards the women who dare to want the men who do not treat them like possessions. Hence Sonnenburg and the Tangled Series turning Flynn - onto whom Sonnenburg projected his "pretty boy who steals women from Nice Guys like him" phobia - into a useless comedic relief.

Movie Flynn was the only Disney male Deuteragonist who died for woman's freedom without her having to die or to sacrifice for him first. Something not even Hercules managed, as the latter had spent too much screentime dreaming of the cheering crowds and of being a literal God TM before he deigned to make his own sacrifice for Meg after her grand Madonna act. It took a woman traumatized by multiple other men - her abusive ex and Hades - to die as a "penance" for daring to recognize men as a class are a threat to women.

And go figure - Meg was not promised an Olympus for her sacrifice for Hercules and did not get to choose between power and a hot guy. Only a man gets to choose between power and a hot girl because a man putting a woman first is treated as a heroic act by default whilst a woman sacrificing for a man is treated as a given.

Tangled and Flynn's sacrifice was not the default even for Disney - it was the outlier.

It showed that male allyship can be possible, that woman's inherent worth is not tied to her forced "gifts" symbolizing her oppression, beauty or "destiny" (subverting the "male feminist" narratives and Magical Girl narratives a la "Buffy" and the 90-s anime "Sailor Moon").

It showed that female liberation requires recognizing when so-called "choices TM" are only extensions of abuse (Rapunzel promising Gothel to stay with her forever if the latter allows her to heal Flynn). That true solidarity requires relinquishing male privilege. It means rejecting any scenario in which a woman forfeits her freedom or autonomy for the benefit of a man, even if she "chooses" it under coercion and pressure.

Flynn's ultimate act of self-erasure, not for glory or reward but to affirm Rapunzel's agency, remains one of Disney's most powerful feminist statements.

Or rather, remained.

Until Sonnenburg's man-child self and until Disney's corporate selves undid it entirely with the pandering series and Rapunzel's magical hair returning and being reframed: from the symbol of her oppression to the symbol of her "girlpower" (aka a classic patriarchal practice, convincing women that oppressive symbols are actually "empowering" for them/us).

All of that served one and only purpose: so that the lovers of the male feminist, Magical Girl TM narratives could enjoy the scenario they had been wanting to see since Tangled 2010 was out and they'd been foaming from their media illiterate mouths. A "girlboss" moment of Rapunzel cutting her hair on her own. Who cares she never wanted it back in the first place? The way Buffy never wanted her "special power", the way Usagi never wanted it? Silly women, don't know their minds.

Who cares that a woman should not be expected to weaponize the symbols of her oppression and see them as "girlpower"? Men at the Disney studio "know best" - even if Gothel didn't.

And then there were women. Real life women.

Who just lost it all again and were sidelined again and had their fictional power fantasies invalidated - because not even in fiction do we get to be put first. Not even in fiction do we get to be "worthy" of male sacrifice. Oh, no.

We have to do the Labor TM to be considered "valuable and empowered". Whilst the men get to either stand there looking pretty in the "progressive" media because real life men in charge of that media are threatened by "pretty boys" and deliberately write male characters that way. Or, men get to to play into the system that oppresses and sidelines women, even if the men themselves are also hurt by it and then act "shocked" when said system discards them.

Sonnenburg, THIS is what happened to you:
