It took me a while to get to the sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird," but it was worth the wait! I read this on the recommendation of a friend. I know all of the scandal surrounding its publishing, and that's why I was so hesitant to read it. I'm glad I did though, if for no other reason than to have a "real time" voice of someone in the 50s trying to understand the changing world of their childhood. I read To Kill a Mockingbird in 2015, when Go Set a Watchman was released. I was really interested in why they decided to publish an unfinished manuscript, the story from which TKaM was born. Whilst I appreciate how controversial TKaM would have been at the time it was released, and I enjoyed the book, I don’t hold it in the same esteem that others do. It is a wonderful book and I feel guilty that I don’t love it as much as everyone seems to. When Mockingbird Songs by Wayne Flynt came in the mail, I was curious to see how Harper Lee, the notoriously private woman, would come across through her correspondences with Flynt. What kind of picture would they paint of her and what did this book have to offer that others haven’t been able to glean in the past? . Flynt is an esteemed professor and writer and was friends with each of the three Lee sisters. The letters between them reveal a side to Nelle Harper Lee that is very different from the public image she inadvertently created. Thought to be a cold and indifferent person, these letters show Harper Lee to be an empathetic, warm and spirited woman who revelled in good conversation and good company. She was passionately against biographies of the living, for fear of being ‘caged’ and only allowed Flynt to honour her by reading a eulogy at her funeral, not of Harper Lee herself, but of her book and the values it conveyed. . I thoroughly enjoyed this little book, appreciating the ‘peek’ behind the curtain, and have a new appreciation of TKaM; I will be adding a reread to my 2019 reading goals, to perhaps love her book a little more.
