Audition Day

Subin looked around the room in confusion; a singular wall of mirrors with the rest being covered in off beige shade, it wasn’t quite yellow enough to be beige and it wasn’t quite green enough to baby poop. It was a hideous color. Who decided to paint this room? Subin couldn’t help but squint at the autorious color combinations, it was all bright and overwhelming and it hurt his eyes.

“Seo Subin?” Subin heard the voice of a man call out, but he kept on staring at the poorly painted brown color. They were really starting to bother him. “Aren’t you Seo Subin?” The man spoke directly to him this time, startling Subin out of his daydream-like state.

“Oh! Yes! I’m so sorry, I’m not used to being called by my Korean name.” Subin smiled sheepishly as he stood up to follow the man into the audition room. He had only come to this agency after being recruited at the underground rap shows by some man who went by the name of Park Jinyoung. It was a multi day competition and right now his team had made it into the final round, so he wasn’t entirely sure what compelled him to accept the man - who Subin had mistakenly signed up for vocal lessons at Underground Shows Day Two: Explore the World Through Music Free Sessions - who told him to come audition at his company, JYP Entertainment. It was eleven o’clock at night, Subin had been competing all day long, he was struggling with his Korean due to the lack of sleep and many shots of soju, and the only Korean song he could remember all the words to at this late hour in the night was Tears by So Chan Wee and that’s only because he had sung it fifteen times at karaoke with the Busan team last night. (Mind you, he was definitely drunk and definitely pitch-y.) He couldn’t find one good reason for him to be here right now: auditioning to become a trainee at JYP Entertainment company, to maybe debut in a K-Pop group, when his entire life was already being laid out for him.

But right on cue, when the man sat down behind the long pull out table next to two women, Subin bowed and introduced himself as a seventeen year old native Australian boy who currently spent his time divided between Seoul and Adelaide. And when he was told to, he opened his mouth to sing the song that he had somewhat - if belting out the lyrics after four illegally drunken beers with the Busan Hip Hop team counts as preparing - prepared for the judges. Except….Subin is now belatedly realizing in his head that the song he is singing is not, in fact, Tears by So Chan Wee but it is, in fact, Always Be My Baby by Mariah Carey (Which Subin totally did not listen to on repeat on the taxi ride over to the building.). Taking a deep breath between the verse and the chorus, knowing it’s too late to go back now, Subin gives it all he’s got and tries his best to finish off the song strong. Except, now he’s finished and the judges are just staring at him.

“Uhm….How did I do?” Subin asks nervously, ready to let his shaky knees win and collapse to the ground. One of the judges snaps out a daze of some sort, staring at the young boy with what appears to be fondness, and smiles brightly.

“You’ve definitely passed!” The woman grins, “But….Could you perhaps sing another song for us?”

“I told you he was great! Didn’t I tell you guys?” The man suddenly began to boast to the woman sitting next to him, tapping her arm repeatedly. Subin was confused again. What was happening?

“Sure?” Subin said, maybe after another song they’ll tell him what’s happening? This time when Subin opened up his mouth to sing, he made sure he was singing Tears by So Chan Wee.

elsy notices something off with mia causing to make a trip to the hospital. she reunites with none other than bang chan, causing her to realize something in the end.

At the end of their performance, standing in their ending pose, both Mia and Elsy gave the cameras a wink and finger hearts. The two left the stage, waving goodbye to the audience.

It was right when they got off stage when Mia began feeling lightheaded as well as overheated. She thought maybe it was the costume that was making her feel hot.

Since it was halloween, the girls decided to wear costumes for their stage performance, Mia picking little red riding hood and Elsy picking a devil.

“That was a fun stage!” Elsy beamed. She looked back to see Mia’s expression only to be met with an odd looking Mia. Elsy stared at her confused, but then turned concerned. “Hey, are you okay?”

Mia slowly nodded her head, trying not to move it so much, scared that it would cause her to get dizzy. She made it all the way to the dressing room with Elsy by her side. But once entering, Mia felt her legs wobble and all the energy she had in her body soon gone. She collapsed on the floor, Elsy getting frightened.

“Mia!” She gasped, kneeling down next to her. “Someone help!”

Both of the girl’s managers came fast to the dressing room upon hearing Elsy shout.

“What happened?” Questioned Mia’s manager.

“I don’t know! Right when we stepped in she fell to the floor.”

He went to grab Mia’s wrist, checking her pulse. He knew she was okay, but they needed to head to the hospital rightaway. Already grabbing his phone, he began dialing for help. Feeling how warm Mia was, he also began taking off the red cape around her. “She’s feeling hot right now.” He stated before getting her hair out of her face.

Throughout the wait, Elsy had slipped into a sweater before the ambulance had got there to take Mia. She and along with Mia’s manager rode in the vehicle. The older girl’s legs began shaking uncontrollably, nervous for her friend. Elsy wasn’t sure what went wrong. She thought Mia was doing fine, so how could this had happened?

And on the ride to the hospital, Elsy already knew she had to call Chan.

“Hello?” He answered, surprised to have seen Elsy calling him.

“Bang Chan.” She said worriedly. “I don’t want to freak you out, but just to let you know, we’re on our way to the hospital. Mia passed out.”

From hearing the last three words, Chan grew in shock but also began to worry for his member. “Oh my god, is she okay? I’ll meet you guys there.”

“She’s doing fine.” Elsy said unconvincingly. She wasn’t too sure and that made Chan even more panicked.

The boy hung up before telling Elsy he would there as soon as he could, causing the girl to let out a breath.

And once arriving to the hospital, they had told Elsy and the manager to wait in the waiting room. Once in awhile they would come to give them updates on the girl.

“Well, it looks like she wasn’t getting a lot of rest and her body was just really tired and because of that and with the amount of clothing she had on, it caused her to be overheated.” The doctor explained. “She’s very much awake now, but from the looks of it she has been barely eating as well, so we gave her some food to get those nutrients.” He said. “But other than that, she should be okay.”

Elsy sighed in relief after hearing the news that Mia was in fact okay. “Can we see her?”

“Of course.” The doctor answered with a smile before walking off.

Before Elsy could walk any further, she had heard her name being shout from behind. “Elsy!”

She was met with Chan jogging towards her, come to a halt when being right in front of Elsy. He tried catching his breath before speaking to her about Mia. “How is she?”

“She’s doing okay.” Elsy assured him. She looked behind him, thinking the rest of her members would be here. “Where’s the others?” She questioned.

“Since it was a lot of us, they only let one in and so they told me to be the one.” Chan answered.

“Ah.” Elsy said. “I was actually about to go see her. Wanna come?”

“Most definitely.”

Elsy led the way to Mia’s room, Chan following shortly behind. The girl gulped a little from being this close to Chan. She found it odd, as if they weren’t best friends for a whole ten years, but with the recent events that had happened, Chan almost felt like a stranger to her. She hated the way things ended with him because still in the back of her mind she missed him.

Stopping in front of a door, Elsy softly knocked three times before entering with Chan. Mia instantly grinned upon seeing her then smiled even harder after seeing Chan. “Hey, you two.”

“How are you feeling?” Chan questioned, already walking to her side and Elsy on the other.

“A lot better.” She replied. “Except this hospital food is kinda gross.”

Chan and Elsy laughed from seeing Mia’s disgusted face from looking at the food. “The doctor said you need to eat though. Have you not been eating?” Elsy questioned.

“I have. Just haven’t really had a proper meal.”

“What else was wrong?” Chan asked after.

“She was overheated and her body was tired.” Elsy replied, giving him all the information that the doctor had given her. “But he did say she’ll be okay.”

“I guess with having a comeback then going straight to this project after got to me.” Mia sighed. “I have been feeling a little drained.”

“If you feel like you can’t do it no more and want to rest, Mia, we can always stop-“

“No!” Mia exclaimed. “I’ve been having the greatest time. I don’t want to quit. Let’s just finish these next couple of weeks.”

Chan and Elsy looked at each other, shaking their heads as they smiled back at Mia. “It’s like you don’t know what resting is, do you?” Chan snorted.

Mia raised a brow at him. “You don’t either.” She said in English.

“You got me there.”

Chan patted Mia’s shoulder, sighing. “You rest up okay? And if you ever need anything, you let me know rightaway, got it?”

“Will do.” Mia smiled.

Elsy grinned at Mia before exiting the room with Chan, the both of them letting out a small breath. “Please makes sure she rests whenever she can and to also not skip meals. She tends to do that sometimes.”

The girl nodded at him. “Don’t worry, I will.”

Without the two thinking of their next action, both Chan and Elsy went in for a hug. It wasn’t until a couple of seconds later that Elsy had realized what was going on, but she couldn’t get herself to pull away just yet.

And neither did Chan. He even hugged her a little tighter, as well as Elsy, the both of them giving the message on how much they had missed each other. As if all the problems they had going on, simply vanished away from just that hug.

Elsy let out a breath before the two finally broke away, but still in each other’s embrace when they looked at each other. The two let out a small chuckle.

But it was something that had switched up on Elsy as Chan had stared down at her. It was an old feeling she thought she had left behind long ago that began creeping up on her, causing the girl to slightly bite her lip nervously.

Bittersweet is the first full album by GOT7′s Jenn. It released on August 30, 2021 with ‘Gashina’ serving as the title track. She also performed ‘BAD’ and 'Good Bye’ as subtitle tracks.

She worked with different artists to compose and arrange the album, writing most of the lyrics by herself. She wrote the title track with Teddy Park, Joe Rhee, and 24. She made appearances on Dingo’s Killing Voice, You Heeyeol’s Sketchbook, and Weekly Idol along with her two bandmates, JAY B and BamBam.
