The disappearance of Bella Goth.
No notes available.
Day 1 of 7, Summer 2007
Alijah pauses outside Mortimer’s study, hearing the familiar sound of frustration and angry words spilling through the closed door. He’s been avoiding this room for weeks, unsure of how to confront the reality of Bella's absence — a reality that has gripped Mortimer tighter with every passing day. But hearing the intensity of his father-in-law’s voice, Alijah knows he can’t avoid it anymore.
He knocks, then steps into the room without waiting for a reply.
The space is more cluttered than Alijah has ever seen it. Where there once stood a grandfather clock, now there are boxes of papers, newspapers strewn about, and stacks of files that haven’t been touched in who knows how long. Mortimer is hunched over his computer, engrossed in something. The screen glows with a web forum — true crime, judging by the comments, a rabbit hole Mortimer has been known to dive into late at night.
“Mortimer?” Alijah’s voice is quiet, trying not to startle him. He takes a hesitant step inside.
Mortimer’s head snaps up, irritation etched deep into his face. “You won’t believe this,” he says, his voice shaking with both anger and exhaustion. “Some idiot — Simsterious404 — thinks I had something to do with Bella’s disappearance. Look at this garbage.” He gestures wildly at the screen, where some baseless conspiracy theory lays out a twisted narrative involving Mortimer and Bella's last known whereabouts.
Alijah takes a seat in the armchair across from him, trying to choose his words carefully. “Mortimer… You know the police have already cleared you. This — this is just noise. People who don’t know what they’re talking about.”
But his words have the opposite effect. Mortimer’s eyes blaze, and he slams his hand down on the desk, rattling the notepad and post-its scattered there. “Noise? The police have failed us, Alijah! They haven’t found a damn thing! They didn't even know she was involved in StrangerVille until I told them! And now this — this circus, this endless speculation online—”
He gestures toward a corkboard behind him, now covered in notes and photographs, including one of Jess Sigworth in a possessed state. Alijah’s heart skips a beat. He recognizes the face immediately, though he keeps his expression neutral. How had Mortimer gotten that photo? Could he have somehow connected Jess to Bella’s disappearance? Alijah doesn’t dare ask.
Alijah considers for a moment whether he should tell Mortimer what he knows. The temptation pulls at him, the desire to lift even a fraction of this burden off his family. But the memory of StrangerVille holds him back — the horror, the danger, and his own cowardice when Bella, as Agent Silhouette, first vaccinated him and asked him to help her.
“I know it feels hopeless,” Alijah says, carefully keeping his voice level. “But obsessing over these forums, over these random people… it’s not going to bring her back.”
Mortimer falls silent for a moment, the weight of his grief settling back into his shoulders. Alijah glances at the mess around them — the boxes, the overflowing papers, the corkboards with threads pulled tight between photos and documents. He wonders, not for the first time, if Mortimer will ever find peace, or if the man will be haunted by this mystery forever.
As Alijah stands to leave, he catches one last glimpse of the photo of Jess. His heart tightens in his chest. There are so many secrets buried here — secrets that may never come to light. But for now, he’s not ready to unearth them.
