➤ The Hormuz Strait crisis is causing a GPU chip shortage due to disruptions in helium supply, impacting Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure. ➤ Increased energy costs and competition for silicon are driving up GPU prices, affecting both miners and AI compute providers. ➤ The scarcity and rising cost of GPUs pose a physical limitation to the growth of decentralized AI compute networks and could impact AI token valuations.
If you want to play games just get into politics.
you know the gpu shortage is bad when...
the first nvidia gpu (released in 1999, has 32 mb of vram) is 100 dollars second hand. https://www.ebay.com/itm/324899619141?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28
Oh joooooooy. The GPU shortage and chip shortage should be ongoing through much of 2022 as well.
The world is really weird right now. Bitcoin is at an all-time high, we have a world-wide pandemic with tons of people staying home, and a new GPU lineup by NVidia with great price-to-performance ratio. As one could imagine, this sounds like a recipe for disaster when it comes to stock availability for consumers. Turns out, this is completely true. Making matters worse, GPU prices online have completely skyrocketed.
For reference, I helped build someone a budget gaming PC build a couple years ago; the GPU of choice was a GTX 970 which we secured for an extremely reasonable $100 on eBay. Imagine my surprise when the now 7 YEAR OLD mid-to-high range card is trending on eBay for over double the price. The worst part about all of this, is that people are willing to pay these prices even for hardware this old just so that gamers can get their hands on whatever they can.
With Bitcoin mining also being at an all-time high, the small stock that becomes available for sale when replenished is instantly decimated by bots and scalpers taking advantage of this situation. Whenever I ask how people I’ve met have secured any form a modern 30 series RTX GPU, they respond with something along the lines of: “I had hundreds of tabs open for hours just mashing F5 to refresh the page when stock is re-supplied and clicked buy before everyone else.” However, even this can prove to be a fruitless endeavor as botting has made this an exercise in inhuman feats of speed and endurance to compete with the speed at which bots buy the stock up. Doing just a couple Google searches, one can find just how many GPUs these miners and scalpers are buying at a time. It’s quite shocking.
For now, one’s best bet of securing a graphics card is camping in-line at your nearest Micro Center for the next restock. I sincerely hope NVidia and their distributors can figure something out for actual gamers looking for an upgrade.

The more I look into the whole 'cryptomining' craze that's causing GPUs to be so pricey, the angrier about it I get. Couldn't have picked a worse time to try and build a gaming PC.
