God I just love strong women
Poor guy, he looks so traumatised.
The clan were acquainted with hunting and the horrors of human action. Jake was a marine and most other humans fighting would've been hired literally to fight. Norm was one of the few (if not, only) who had little to no combat experience.
But I love that he went back out anyway.
thinking about Spider and his orphanhood, grief, and proximity to Grace's avatar
Spider was an orphan who likely couldn't grieve, never had strong parental ties, and was isolated between worlds. and Grace was too. Grace was human and Na'vi and isolated from the world in her tank and eternal slumber. she was a mother. the mother of his best friend and sister. a mother to her students. to any child she came across. every story of her is spoken with reverence, of her kindness and acceptance and love. she glowed with a gentle light that would draw in the attention of any child.
she was likely the most 'consistent' adult in his life. I bet he was told, at least once, that she would have loved him, in a tone that was more ashamed than caring from one of the science techs, knowing she'd have their asses if she ever woke up. she never shooed him away. was never too busy. never sneered at him. never had a tease on her tongue. never whispered about the blood in his veins. she just slept, and slept, and kept on sleeping. always. but that's comforting in it's own right.
the likelihood that he saw her as some form of maternal figure is high, even before he got close to Kiri. just as a little kid who wanted to see the pretty lady up close and found solace in her. a place he could tuck close and not be in the way. where he can pretend he is truly loved by someone. where he could be upset, and cry, and miss people no one else wanted him to talk about. he can be loud or annoying or snotty or a chatterbox with her. he can be anything the others don't like. it's never met with even a shred of cruelty.
he could play by her, bringing his toys by her tank, babbling softly to himself and to her. including her in his play. in his imagination. with soldiers and jets and worn woven ikran and blue figures made of sticks and beads and cord. re-enacting battles he was too young to remember. deaths that spawned the loneliness that plagued his first memories. he's processing in a place with no judgment.
when he meets Kiri, the little girl being brought to see her mama and following her adoptive parents to the lab when they're needed there, they become fast friends. little Spider was too young to understand that Grace was already someones mama, to know it could be rude or insensitive to see Grace as a mama too. maybe the other adults try and push him away when she comes. even if Spider doesn't call her mama directly. but Kiri finds a friend in Spider quickly.
"we can share. my mommy was really really nice, so I think she can love both of us." "really?" "yeah! and then we can be brother and sister! for real!" "cool!"
he and Kiri would scribble together on the floor and tape the drawings and pictures to where she could 'see' them. he'd make a little pallet of pillows and blankets and toys half under her tank, spending his time there whenever allowed.
when he can go outside, he brings her "samples" of plants or cool bugs or pretty rocks or anything else he finds. he reads through her books and journals, starting at the ones she wrote and brought for her students, and working up towards her research guides. he nerds out with her, especially as he gets older and is doing his own research, trying to be like her, like the science guys. trying to be helpful and important. to make them proud.
he asks his mama for advice when he's stumped or tells her when he finds something she didn't have a ton of writing on. he'd make his own jounrals and read them to her and try and make them sound smart like hers had been. he and Kiri would swap their teachings, and Kiri would tell her what her mom and grandma was teaching her about plants as healers. he and Kiri decorate the bars with beads and cords and weavings and little items, because they want their mama to look pretty.
and he does think she's pretty. if he's not calling her mama or Grace, he's calling her the pretty lady. especially as a younger kid.
Grace moves. it's reflexes, sure. but she moves. she twitches and flutters, and every now and then, she blinks or her lips curl into what looks like a smile. and Spider is so young in the beginning. kids hardly understand death that young, let alone brain death, or the absence of soul and mind. he doesn't understand that she won't wake up, not for years. even if told again and again. he holds onto innocent, naive, childish hope and optimism.
cause what if they were wrong? what if Grace just needed someone to wait up for her? what if she could hear them? what if she would?maybe he'd have a mama then. maybe he wouldn't be alone. maybe he would make her proud. he'd know her warmth, the warmth of skin, and not just the warmth of her tank. maybe she could finally hold him.
he wants to hope. part of him, so desperate for adult connection, needs to hope. so every smile. every flutter of her eyes. it gives him hope. he'd shout for someone to come look cause she's waking up! I swear, I swear!
and she never does. and he'll accept that eventually. mostly. by 16 he knows. but... maybe a little piece of him needs to keep believing. hoping. needs to wait for a miracle like the child he is deep down.
but he doesn't just stay close over the prospect of her one day awaking up and being his mama, he stays close cause he loves her. he respects her. he wants to keep her company, even if all she'll ever be able to give in return is physically being there. he doesn't need anything else from his mama.
she's always there to talk to when no one else has time, so for years he talks to her quietly when he checks up on here, stopping by her tank in the lab whenever he can. asking if she's ok. if she needs anything, out of manners and not genuine wonder. telling her where he's going, what he's doing, what he did that day. asking her things. perching on her while he reads something. sitting against her while he mends something. asking her opinion when picking new beads for a piece of jewelry. it's nice to have someone to talk to.
he's invested in her tank maintenance. maybe he once, as a kid, caught a malfunction before the techs did. and sat with Grace when she was decanted while the tank was fixed. Kiri was probably there too, given the opportunity to hug her mom in the flesh. maybe they tucked her in, covering her in blankets, where she laid on a cot and they got to cuddle her. got to press close. and for a single night they just looked like a mom and her kids. and Spider beleives the squeezes of her hand around his and the curls in her lips were real. even if she couldn't come all the way back to them.
and as he got older, he learned to read the control tablet and the readings and fix little things as he passed by. when they ahd to move her, for whatever reason, he was a hair protective. making sure they were all careful moving his mama. the move from Hellsgate to High Camp gave him heartburn, and both he and Kiri rushed to meet her in the lab and make sure she was ok.
"you alright mama? they didn't rough you up, did they?"
maybe they through a little laugh-so-we-don't-trauma-respond-moving-in-party for their mom's husk of a body. cause that seems like something they would do.
he'd bring her offerings of candies and snacks as a little kid. cause he saw others leave tributes for the dead at the various shrines and walls of commemoration. and once he's old enough (or so he thinks) to find and start sneaking alcohol from the community stash. he'd bring her a drink, a cigarette if he can find and bum one. and he sits by her. choking down his cup of whatever he managed to scrounge up. hers is next to him. left like all his past offerings
"can't decide if you would scold me for stealing from the liquor stash or commend me... I have mixed sources on that one. but it's not like you can come scold me. so. here. to you Grace.... I really, really wish I got to meet you." maybe she smiles. just in reflex of course. he'll smile back.
he just. coped. his entire childhood. through her. she wasn't present enough to be a mother, not truly. but it was more like a security blanket. something to cling to. a false warmth. maybe he'd remind some of the science guys of Harlow's Monkeys, in a way. because in a way, despite being in a glass and metal tank, she was warmth, she was soft safety, where they were mechanical nourishment.
maybe he dreamed of floating in that tank with her, free from all the struggles he faced, and just floating free in her arms. at peace. maybe he wishes he could be with her. just sometimes, when he's really sad. when he's really lonely.
she gave him inspiration when no one else was. he tried to make her proud when no one else would pay attention. she made him strive to be more.
and he's sad when he looks at her, sometimes, when he remembers he's an orphan no one actually wanted, and he's allowed to mourn her more then his actual parents. but he loves her. he watches her sleep and hopes she's at peace. wishes she was really his mom. wishes she would wake up. wishes she was never hurt to begin with. wishes his father hadn't shot her. he's apologized too many times to count. he felt guiltier as he got older. maybe he didn't deserve to call her mom. it's a complex range of emotions that has built up over the years that he doesn't totally know what to do with. but he still loves her.
maybe one day he'll be able to meet her in Eywa. maybe the avatar was a looking glass for Grace's soul to watch over her children as they grew up. so she could see every drawing. every book. hear every babble. feel the rare cuddle. feel ever so proud of them. sure, she saw them through Eywa, like all souls did. but this was different. a direct window instead of a vast but almost vague shared intelligence.
and she can tell him how long she waited for the day she'd get to hold him and call him her son to his face, so he could no longer deny it to himself.
Look what I found, this is so cute 😭
Lo’ak being called the Toruk Makto amulet is just so….😭 he is really Jake’s baby, and still people say he hates him. 🥹🥹
James Cameron had to kill of Grace and Trudy because if they had lived to see all the shitty choices Jake has made he would have brain damage
love that for some reason “female character who is wholeheartedly a mother and also so badass she’s scary” has been a pillar of james cameron’s filmography since like the 80s
norm and grace headcanons plzplzplz 🙏🏻
Norm and Grace headcanons 🧪🌿
1. Once Norm accidentally called Grace 'mom' when tired one morning, Norm was in shock and Grace just snorted and walked off.
2. Grace secretly finds Norm really funny, she puts on a stoic persona infront of everyone but at 2AM all she can think about is how he fell over and starts pissing herself laughing in bed
3. Norm usually rolls around the lab on a wheely chair in opposition to walking, he crashed into Grace and she genuinely confiscated his wheels off his chair and now he has a normal chair.
4. When Norm was a kid and he read Grace's book and became obsessed with Pandora. he sent Grace loads of fan mail. Grace refound it one day and Norm had never been more embarrassed in his life. She even put a letter on the staff bulletin board
5. They have lock downs when an animal breakes past security and all the doors automatically lock. They were locked in a room together. They spent like 9 hours just yapping and getting to know eachother in this time, Grace had always seen Norm as kind of ditsy and pathetic, but after this she saw him from a whole new light and started to take him seriously.
6. Grace lowkey gets maternal when any of the marines make fun of Norm, she loses her shit more than normal
7. Grace crashed out at Norm once when something went wrong in an experiment. She screamed at him and for a few days after he remained quiet, emotionless and unnorm like. It was the first time she ever felt bad about shouting at someone in the work place.
8. On her desk, she has a printed picture of her and Norm. It was his first day and he found a new species of plant, Max took a picture of them analysing it and Norm looks so happy.
9. Norm signs holiday cards to Grace with, "love from Norm (your favourite co-worker)" and then uncontrollably laughs
10. Grace is the only person who knows that Norm secretly smokes.
(Not a Hc but they give massive Jake Peralta and Captain Holt vibes)
if i had a nickel for every time a scientist named grace was welcomed into the community of an alien race and started teaching the youth of said community – i would have two nickels.
which isn't a lot. but it's weird that it's happened twice, right?
