@classicstober Day 3: The Graeae.

Daughters of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto and sisters of the Gorgons, the Graeae were notably born as hag-like creatures and were described as “swan-bodied”. They personified the white foam of the sea and shared between the three of them a single eye and one tooth.

It’s a bit less historically inspired than my usual designs, but it’s spooky season and I wanted to stretch my creative muscles to work with the interesting visuals passed down to us from ancient authors.

I’d forgotten about this illustration I made of the Graiai for ClassicsTober ‘21 (prompt: ‘3’) and I’ve reworked it for today because I love it. Mostly the Phorkides (daughters of Phorkis) are described as old hags, but Aeschylus describes them as swan-like, like Sirens, which seems fitting as personifications as the white foam of the sea.

Spoiler Alert for Twisted Wonderland fans: Dire Crowley is based on Disney's 1985 The Black Cauldron. He is a descendant of The Horned King, and is beholden to The Graeae (Grey Sisters), specifically Deino.

Yeah, ok, then why does Prometheus have to explicitly warn Io (the woman who's basically just what people WANT medusa to be) to avoid them? He clearly has them being dangerous and to be avoided, putting them together with natural dangers and griffins.

its interesting that the Graeae are mentioned here too like they are all dangerous monsters.
