Grammar3 - Circumstances of the event

It is one thing to inform FOR THE FIRST TIME about the fact that something has happened. In this case we use 了 and 过.

But when we ask for or add further informations on the event, THAT WE KNOW HAS HAPPENED, we need to use this special construction.

面 miàn means SURFACE, something FLAT.

Faces of Chinese people are quite flat as their noses aren't so dominant, so it also means FACE (in abstract sense).

Why does it also mean NOODLES? To make noodles, you need to distribute a dough over some flat surface, and then cut it into individual noodles.

To make noodles you need a FLOUR, which is another meaning of 面.

There are three particles to put right after a verb to specify its relation to Time.

了 indicates, that the action is over, finished.

过 indicates, that we have an experience with something, that it has happened so we can refer to it.

着 emphasises duration of an action in time.
