I was browsing Finnish learning materials

and I came by a service provided by Yle called Kielikoulu  https://kielikoulu.yle.fi/#/, which let’s learners watch various programs in Finnish, with subtitles, which can be translated on the spot

It also has a section that lets you mark the words you already know at a certain level

Sadly I don’t know if it’s available outside of Finland, but I’m going to be watching some Finnish Peppa Pig and other things

Japanese with The Karate Kid / Cobra Kai -- GI

The Kanji I chose for today is THE number one thing that might be summoned in your mind when one says karate: the gi.

Now for a bit of Kanji history:

The character for gi comes from a handwriting variant of 著 cho, that meant something like "at rest on something flat". Whilst the 著 character remained in usage, it kept its other meaning of "(usually written) work", "book" and its variant 着 took the meaning of "wearing [on oneself]", "something that one wears".

Nowadays, the Kanji for gi -- and read as such -- is used mostly to mean "clothing" as in, you guessed it, 着物 kimono (the thing•s that is/are worn). In the same fashion, we then have jūdō-gi and karate-gi, respectively written 柔道着 and 空手着.

Also, why is the karate-gi white? Simple answer to a simple question: The color white was chosen to represent the values of purity, avoidance of ego, and simplicity. Regardless of social class, all students started as equals.

Some other interesting words using the same Kanji:

試着 shichaku to try on clothes

上着 uwagi coat; jacket; tunic VS 下着 shitagi underwear

晴れ着 haregi one's Sunday best; one's best clothes

Further uses of 着 in the sense of "to arrive", "to land":

土着 dochaku indigenousness; being native to a region

延着 enchaku delayed arrival

到着 tōchaku arrival

着陸 chakuriku to land; alighting; touch down
