You SHOULDN’T install Tik Tok because it’s Chinese spyware. I’d agree that Facebook is American spyware, but Tik Tok collects more data than even Facebook.
But banning Tik Tok here would basically set precedent for a sort of “American Great Firewall,” contributing to the erosion of every advantage America has over China.
I do not believe in banning everything that I don’t think people should do/use.
As someone who is a child of Chinese immigrants and is also interested in politics, I like to keep an eye on Chinese politics. Chinese citizens can be really smart at trying to evade government censorship online, and this has led to their own version of the #MeToo movement, as Hasan Minhaj explains.
The world’s most valuable company appears to have pulled down the apps amid China’s deepening crackdown on tools that evade internet controls.
AAPL: It’s the cost of doing business. What will Apple do when Trump asks for the same rights as China?
This is not the first time that Apple has removed apps at the request of the Chinese government, but it is a new reminder of how deeply beholden the tech giant has become to Beijing at a moment when the leadership has been pushing to tighten its control over the internet.
Back in 2015. Apple’s Tim Cook Delivers Blistering Speech On Encryption, Privacy
“Like many of you, we at Apple reject the idea that our customers should have to make tradeoffs between privacy and security. We can, and we must provide both in equal measure. We believe that people have a fundamental right to privacy. The American people demand it, the constitution demands it, morality demands it.”, Tim Cook
“There’s another attack on our civil liberties that we see heating up every day — it’s the battle over encryption. Some in Washington are hoping to undermine the ability of ordinary citizens to encrypt their data,” , Tim Cook
I read beforehand about the issues with China blocking many websites. It was recommended to get a VPN before you go.
There are a lot of issues and misinformation with this.
A. Many VPNs are blocked in China, including ones usually recommended in articles. You have to buy and install the VPN BEFORE you arrive in China. VPN apps that are blocked will usually give you instructions to modify the OS on your phone or computer. As usual, I found their instructions were for an earlier version of the operating system, and it was difficult to work my way through them. I ended up not using a VPN.
B. The rules for blocked sites are very irregular. But in particular, many more sites are blocked on hotel Wifi than on cell service. I found that I was often turning off wifi to use cell service.
C. Cell service and wifi speeds vary a lot. Cellular signals vary in weird ways. You might get a great signal out in the middle of the desert and one bar in the center city.
People seemed most happy with e-sims or paid international service on their cell phone provider.
The ' Great Firewall of China ' as I understand it is intended to protect China from bad influences arriving from outside - why would results from Baidu accessed from outside China be affected by it or related policies?
