This specific breathing technique is called "Box Breathing", I usually like to look at gifs when I do this to help me keep time. I've got two gifs below if you prefer a visual. If neither of these gifs are a comfortable speed for you, I recommend looking up "Box breathing gif" and see if there is one that is a timing you like!

You can also use music to help you keep time, or watch the second hand of a clock.

[TITLE inside of image] Control and Pace your Breathing

[BODY inside of image] Breathe in through your nose for a count that is comfortable for you (often 4 to 7). Hold that breath in for the same count. Breathe out through your mouth with pursed lips (like you're blowing out a candle). Then hold with no breath for the same count. Repeat as much as you need. Try placing your hands on your stomach and breathe with your diaphragm for deeper, slower breaths. Your stomach should raise and lower when you breathe instead of your shoulders when you activate your diaphragm. (Optional).

Grounding Sensory Ideas

Combing your hair with a wooden comb

barefoot on grass

Letting an icecube melt in ur hands or on ur tongue (u can flavour it with lemon juice and so on)

Planting seeds into soil or picking weeds

Using bodycolour to paint on yourself

Use massage balls on yourself

Use a headscratcher

Listen to choir music

Slowly let chocolate melt on ur tongue

Use a aroma diffuser and essential oils

Alternate between warm and cold water

Knead bread dough throughly

Elemental Recharging Spell

This spell is strongest/last longest when in contact with a natural element -- feeling the sun on your face, the wind against your clothes, hearing/feeling the trickling of a stream or feeling the earth beneath your feet/hands. If you can't get outside or sit by an open window, the warmth of a candle, the smoke of incense, the water of a running tap or the earth of a pot plant will do! You can use your favourite element, multiple elements or whatever is easily available at that time. Visualise the element seeping into your skin and working its way to your core, where it begins to pulse and then emanate from you, charging you with nature's energy. Casting while drinking tea is also great, as you’ve got earth (tea), water, fire (no matter how you heated it!) and air when you blow on it. When the sun sets, it's fire remains in my passion, ambition and creativity. When the wind is still, its air is in my lungs and the freedom of my spirit. When the river flows far beyond my sight, my life flows on. When the earth is not beneath my feet, the potential to nurture new opportunities is within me.

30 Day Magical Roots Challenge- Day 2

I've joined @30daymagicroots in doing the 30 Day Magical Roots Challenge! (website here) Every day there will be a small prompt/activity to do, which I'll be posting about as the month goes along.

Day 2: Grounding

Practice grounding today (and every day this challenge)! What is your favorite way to do this? If you have never done this before go to YouTube and do a search for grounding techniques.

My favorite way to ground myself is with a visualization exercise my grandmother taught me...

You sit or stand with your feet firmly planted on the ground. You imagine tree roots coming out of the bottom of your feet and growing down into the ground. They keep growing down until you reach the center of the earth where there is a giant crystal. Your roots wrap around the crystal, anchoring you tight to the earth.

If I feel I need some positive or invigorating energies, I imagine a white light (or whatever color you prefer) emanating from the crystal and travelling back up the roots into my body and through my limbs.

This month I'll try this or other new grounding techniques! :)

Idea of a grounding excerise: pick five items that are in the room and describe them in as much detail as possible. (Pick non-triggering objects for best results.)

For example:

1. The kitchen sink is smooth and shiny. It is a silver color. The faucet has two settings: a steady steam and a dispersed shower. You can adjust the water temperature by turning the lever left and right. You can turn on the water by pulling up the faucet handle. You can turn off the water by pressing the Handel down. There are currently dishes in the sink. There is 3 dishes, 1 cup, and 1 spoon. One of the dishes is blue with flower designs on it. The spoon is a small tea spoon that was used to stir coffee with this morning. The cup is the coffee cup I used this morning.

Etc.

I can already feel you rolling your eyes at me, but just give it a shot! You'd be surprised how much getting up and pacing around can help, even if it doesn't fix everything, it might help you feel a little better in the moment ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚

This is also super good for anger as well as anxiety! Both of those emotions give us a lot of energy in different ways, and moving around can help us expel some of that pent-up energy in a healthier way so we can regulate our emotions and think more clearly.

[TITLE] Get Up & Move Around

[BODY] Go for a walk, stretch, put on your favourite playlist and dance around your room for a while, pick up trash or fold clothes - anything that will get you moving around and get your blood pumping. If you're feeling anxious or stuck in a rut, getting your body moving and your blood pumping can help! Movement helps us by distracting us from the causes of our anxiety, loosening our joints and muscles, and increasing blood flow to our brains!
