Murderbot constantly complaining about being a 'pet bot' is funny because its major desires are to sit and lounge around ART/the Argument or the couch in Mensah's office doing nothing (watching media), or perching on the corner of Mensah's desk and hovering in corners watching its humans. It doesn't want to be touched but also like yeah ok you can touch it if you're special. It wants to walk in, do it's thing, and leave.
Also like ART is *so* excited to have this feral construct show up on its door step. ART brings MB inside, bathes it, gives it medical treatment and a safe cozy space, and then tags it (with the comm receiver stored under MBs ribs) and sets it free to do its thing, hoping it will come back some day. It's like Tag-(neuter)-Release for stray cats. ART likes to dress it up and squeeze it and talk about it and show off pictures of MB to its humans...
Murderbot doesn't want to be a pet, but it's already a cat.

Murderbot 1x07 "Complementary Species"
Okay but like ART and Murderbot's friendship has to be so wild from Mensah's perspective.
You basically adopt a feral cat of a person that saved your life and the cat wanders off for a while (and some more exceedingly crazy shit happens to you), but it comes back eventually (and saves you again, lets not ask how a cat can do that and just stick with the metaphor) and things seem to be going better.
Then a moose shows up out of nowhere and kidnaps your cat and your child (and a bunch of your friends and your brother in law). You find out the moose is best friends with your cat and asked it to move in with it. After the whole kidnapping thing that had multiple witnesses.
The moose is exceedingly polite to you. It cleaned its carpets for you.
Screaming at the thought of Mensah seeing SecUnit calm Volescu down, then chat him up about his kids and his life to keep him from completely losing his shit, and thinking "Oh wow, that SecUnit is like... a whole person with feelings." Only to soon after go knocking on SecUnit's cabinet door, be greeted with a panicked "UH...." and then presumably open up the equivalent of a desk drawer to find SecUnit wrapped in a blanket and probably staring at her like
And now she's thinking "Oh.... OH this SecUnit has BIG feelings and most of them are anxiety" while SecUnit stares somewhere over her right shoulder and clutches its blanket so she can't see all of its pulverized bits shlopping onto the floor but "don't worry they'll grow back now please stop staring at me for 2.4 seconds 20 minutes straight"
I think it is crucial to Mensah's character that she is the mother of teenagers. I think if she didn't have that experience then none of them would have survived the first book. She knows how to talk to a person who is adult sized but doesn't have a lot of life experience. A person who is angry and confused and has problems with authority. When she asks Murderbot nicely to not hurt Gurathin you can tell this isn't her first rodeo.
If she hadn't been able to defuse that situation and get everyone on the same team, GreyChris would have won. Her leadership skills and ability to read people are impressive but so is her ability to be 'The Mom' even to a person who never had one and has no reason to want one. That's what makes her such a great character.
