Mensah Murderbot March | Prompt: matching clothes
Murderbot 1x07 "Complementary Species"
Screaming at the thought of Mensah seeing SecUnit calm Volescu down, then chat him up about his kids and his life to keep him from completely losing his shit, and thinking "Oh wow, that SecUnit is like... a whole person with feelings." Only to soon after go knocking on SecUnit's cabinet door, be greeted with a panicked "UH...." and then presumably open up the equivalent of a desk drawer to find SecUnit wrapped in a blanket and probably staring at her like
And now she's thinking "Oh.... OH this SecUnit has BIG feelings and most of them are anxiety" while SecUnit stares somewhere over her right shoulder and clutches its blanket so she can't see all of its pulverized bits shlopping onto the floor but "don't worry they'll grow back now please stop staring at me for 2.4 seconds 20 minutes straight"
I think it is crucial to Mensah's character that she is the mother of teenagers. I think if she didn't have that experience then none of them would have survived the first book. She knows how to talk to a person who is adult sized but doesn't have a lot of life experience. A person who is angry and confused and has problems with authority. When she asks Murderbot nicely to not hurt Gurathin you can tell this isn't her first rodeo.
If she hadn't been able to defuse that situation and get everyone on the same team, GreyChris would have won. Her leadership skills and ability to read people are impressive but so is her ability to be 'The Mom' even to a person who never had one and has no reason to want one. That's what makes her such a great character.
“She didn't respond for 3.2 seconds and I had that long to wonder if she didn't want to talk to me. That would make this rescue 100 percent more awkward.
Then she said, Prove you're you. Tell me your name.
Okay, not that awkward. That was a relief. It also told me how bad her situation was, if she was worried about someone trying to trick her by posturing in her feed. I said, It's Murderbot, Dr. Mensah.
That conversation had been permanently deleted, so no one knew about it except the PreservationAux team. Assuming they hadn't told anyone else about it. Mensah obviously assumed it.”
- Exit Strategy, Martha Wells
Can we pretty please take a moment to understand and appreciate the fact Mensah probably put the fear of God and Hell into the crew on the company Gunship? Think about it.
They don't know Murderbots history with Mensah, just that she bought its contract.
They don't know it doesn't want to hurt her or make her afraid of it.
All the crew knows is this woman literally grabbed a SecUnit by the collar, looking into its face, and told it 'No' like a mother scolding a misbehaving child. You know the thing that's so dangerous it is classified as an unsecured deadly weapon and has a history of mass murder? (yeah it wasn't actually mass murder but they don't know that) They were probably shitting bricks and I love it so much.
