Shopping trip! Gaon Mall is a parody of Aeon, a large store chain in Japan. I love this chapter because we finally get to see the Yozakuras in casual outfits!!!
-Taiyo and Mutsumi are both wearing very nice business casual outfits, the very picture of a classy married couple <3
-Futaba is wearing a sensible, old-fashioned dress over a puffy shirt. It's cute!
-Shinzo is wearing a loose dress shirt and jeans. Very stylish!
-Shion is wearing a tank top and shorts with an absolutely adorable caddy cap. Love the look!
-Kengo has a sweatshirt, baggy pants, and a hat with cat ears on it. Very casual, very skater-boy core.
-Nanao is just wearing his lab coat, but we'll see in a later panel that he's popped the collar and is wearing the sleeves rolled up. That's probably as casual as a lab coat gets lmao.
Kyoichiro is the only one still wearing his usual black suit, which is kinda disappointing :( I wanted to see him in casual wear!
"Welcome back everyone! Pay no attention to the burning building behind me, it's nothing for you to worry about. We're more focused on what happened when last our tale was-! Pardon?"
"Oh, it's just a side adventure? No need for the narrator? WELL, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?!"
"Ehem. Well, everyone, enjoy the side adventure! I'll be around to tell the tales after this is ove- Are those sirens? Time for me to go! Goodbye!"

The Vandals were all having a beach day, taking a break from their usual adventures.
Agunimon stayed far away from the water, even though Riot reassured him it wouldn't be that bad. Instead, he was on the sand playing volleyball with Duskmon. The game was rather intense and violent, but the two were throwing each other playful quips that made it more entertaining to watch. Reiner was keeping track of the points, a whistle hanging around his neck that he was waiting to use.
Grayson and Gary were making sandcastles with Gargomon and Magimon. Gary and Magimon's castle looked a lot better, mostly because the Rookie kept pulling items out of his hat for the two of them to use. Grayson didn't seem to mind, but did give Gargomon disapproving looks when his Digimon snuck over some of the decorations Magimon summoned.
Meanwhile, Riot had led Sammi and E.R. towards the water. Sistermon Noir and Strikedramon were nearby, lingering on the sands. Sistermon had somehow changed out of her normal clothing to a swimsuit, lying down on the ground and relaxing. Strikedramon was lying down beside her, the flames on his back flickering as he napped.
"Dude, are you sure this is a good idea?" E.R. asked, uneasy. He glanced at Sammi next to him, who seemed both nervous and excited. Riot gave him a reassuring smile. "Yeah! It'll be fine. We won't go far anyway. Just like..."
He held a hand up to his mid-chest. "Up to here. Your feet won't leave the ground. And if you guys don't like it, we'll go play volleyball or something. Promise."
E.R. still seemed nervous about it, but he looked at his friend's smiling face and nodded, returning the smile. "Alright."
"I'm ready," Sammi said, determined. Reiner glanced over at them. "Be careful!"
"We will-!"
"Duskmon look out!"
Reiner whipped his head around as E.R. shouted that, watching as a ball spiked his partner in the face. The Digimon was knocked to the ground, kicking up sand as the ball bounced off of his face.
Everyone paused, looking over as Duskmon lay down on the ground, eyes spirals.
Gargomon let out a low whistle. "...Damn Agunimon, you fucked his shit up."
The Digimon said nothing, staring with wide and concerned eyes. He relaxed after a moment, relieved, when Duskmon groaned and sat up. "Ow."
"Okay, he's fine," Riot said, a bit relieved as Reiner blew his whistle. "Let's go!"
The three began to walk into the water, initially shivering at the cold. Riot was walking backward, constantly glancing up from the slow waves to keep an eye on E.R. and Sammi's progress.
Sammi seemed okay for the most part, pausing for a few moments before continuing. The water was slowly rising up and she stopped once it was up to her stomach. She glanced up at Riot, who gave her a thumbs up, grinning. She gave him a smile back, small but confident as she decided to stay where she was.
E.R. was a bit more apprehensive about it all. He kept stopping and staring at the waves, flinching every time cold water struck him in the stomach. He was frowning, trying to force his body to move and slowly shuffling his feet through the sand. Riot noticed and frowned as well. "E.R.?"
"..."
"Is he okay?" Sammi asked, turning back to face the two - She had gotten distracted talking (Read: Yelling) to Sistermon back on the beach.
Riot shrugged at her, trying again to get his friend's attention. "E.R."
He looked up. He was met with Riot and Sammi looking at him with concern on their faces.
"You okay?"
He paused, then shook his head. Riot nodded, giving him a reassuring smile. "Okay. We'll stop here then. That's fine. How are you feeling right now?"
"Nervous," he admitted, his eyes drifting towards the waves. Honestly, he was surprised he was even in the water. He thought he'd turn back by now, or just stay on the beach to play volleyball with the mons. "Not good, exactly, but not bad either."
"Are you okay staying in the water? We can turn back if you want," Riot suggested, arms crossing over his chest. The water was actually pretty cold, which was kinda odd given how warm and sunny it was that day. Like an ice cube was dropped in the ocean or something.
E.R. hesitated, glancing between them and the beach. He'd really like to get out of the water... but he didn't wanna seem like a coward by leaving. His friends seemed to notice, sharing a look with one another.
"I kinda wanna go back now," Sammi piped up, glancing at E.R. with a smile. He returned the look, thankful, and silently bobbed his head in agreement. Riot stretched out, nodding. "Alright then. This was good progress anyway. Let's head back now-"
The water behind him suddenly exploded, sending the three of them flying. The others rushed over as they landed in the surf, sending water and sand flying.
"Sammi!"
"E.R.!"
"Riot!"
"Guys! What happened?"
"Are you three alright?!"
"What is that thing?"
"Grayson, analyze!"
Grayson quickly grabbed his goggles hanging around his neck and snapped them onto his face. He looked over at the explosion of water, watching as it began to rain down on them.
Wait.
It was turning into snow...?
"Free!" the Digimon, who resembled a large penguin carrying two different colored popsicles. "Free at last! Now to-! Wait, who the fauk are all of you?"
so, the side books are of.... uh..... dubious quality, but there are actually some good (or at least potentially good) characters to scoop out of it and enjoy. the annoying part of this is people having to buy and/or read the books in order to know what their deal is, which is both inconvenient and uhhhh not to everyone’s taste. especially since content in the books can in fact be genuinely, deeply upsetting in ways the author did not intend. and it can be difficult to convey information about their character to people solely through making content of them.
so! i’m considering making compilation posts for different books characters and/or lore, with screencaps/excerpts from the books as well as summaries, to get across What Their Deal Is in (questionable) canon. (as well as maybe either interjecting or adding on some fanon of my own in reblogs.) this would allow people to get familiar with them without having to either subject themselves to the books, or get the info in bits and pieces and all secondhand.
i’m going to start with the characters and threads/bits of lore i’m most interested in myself first, but i might take requests for other stuff later. in the meantime, who’s interested in summaries of which characters/concepts first?
• tellad-urr (trollhunter from before the journey to north america; was worn down physically and mentally by his job and mistreatment by other trolls, finally went mad and allied with the gumm-gumms in an effort to end his slavery to merlin. source material: age of the amulet.)
• skarlagk (gumm-gumm queen of a population living in the darklands who are not allied with gunmar, who has been waiting a long time to take revenge on him for murdering her father. she helps jim survive in the darklands and get to gunmar. source material: welcome to the darklands.)
• rob (half-changeling, half-helheeti, who was born and lives in the darklands; is actually the ‘WHOOOO ARRRE YOOOOUUUU’ guy from the episode with the fetch in strickler’s office. is an obnoxious weirdo who you will probably either find endearing or annoying. source material: welcome to the darklands.)
• kodanth (changeling who was sent to the darklands when deya sealed the bridge, and has been gunmar’s advisor alongside dictatious ever since; ended up being one-upped by dictatious and fed to gunmar’s army of monsters. source material: welcome to the darklands.)
• the dishonorable bodus (mentioned once or twice in the main series, author of the dangerous, future-predicting book of ga-huel; faked his death centuries ago and has been on the run from the janus order with his book ever since. is in fact an asshole and neutral evil as hell. source material: the book of ga-huel.)
• eloise stemhower (polymorph who disguises herself as a cute librarian; is actually an albino changeling with a prosthetic metal arm, and bodus’ double-agent bodyguard. is not afraid to go for some mix-and-match shapeshifting body horror. source material: the book of ga-huel.)
• ballustra (draal’s mother and kanjigar’s bond, who has outlived them both, is a badass, and is in search of her son’s body to avenge his murder and give him a proper burial. source material: way of the wizard.)
• angor rot’s love of and affinity for animals (source material: multiple.)
• angor rot’s trauma history and manifestations of PTSD, and some of the motivations stemming from it (not for the faint of heart because spoiler alert it’s treated fucking shittily lmao) (source material: primarily angor reborn, might be some scraps in other books idr)
i am probably missing some things off the top of my head, especially since i never finished, and bear in mind that a lot of the timeline of events is uhhhhh almost certainly not actually canon, and it may take me a while to make each summary post, but! i figure it’s an undertaking worth doing if anyone is interested. let me know what you think!
