(Grus)
THE COLUMBARY FILES | GRUS
CODE NAME: Grus “The Crane”
MAIN ALIAS: Greyson Underwood
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: England
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Hand-to-Hand Combat
LANGUAGES KNOWN: Japanese, English, Mandarin
EVALUATION: Passed physical exam easily. Seemed anxious and fidgeted often during psychological exam. Shows signs of C-PTSD, most likely due to long term child abuse sustained in previous lodgings. Speaks little. Often refuses bandages or medical attention, has to be asked a few times before giving in. Does not lean towards aggression or emotional dysfunction but rather avoidance, numbness, and withdrawal. Extremely focused while working, however. Almost trance like. Needs decompression and meditation time afterwards.
RECRUITMENT METHOD: Grus was kidnapped as a child (aged 5-7) and brought into the fold of a low-level underground gambling syndicate based in Croydon (Some rumors suggest he was an illegitimate son of a high ranking member, but these reports were never confirmed). Grus was trained since then as a cage fighter, also working, until hand-to-hand combat proficiency, as an errand boy. Grus stayed as both prizefighter and occasional enforcer well into adulthood. Grus had been going by Tsuyoshi at this time and was handed over to Columba during a police raid on the premises. She had seen him fight a few months earlier, but negotiations into his release had been stalled by the syndicate.
LEVERAGE: Security. Grus has admitted he has nowhere else to go, no formal education, no job history outside the many jobs pulled for his previous employers and The Columbary. He'll give as many years as they'll allow, or until his death. Whichever comes first.

A crane native to East Asia and a frequent migratory bird in Japan - 80% of the population overwinters at Izumi in southern Japan. Since 2020, they've also been overwintering in the Phillipines, and in 2011 and 2012 a very lost individual was recorded in Tennessee and Indiana, possibly after it followed migrating sandhill cranes.
The species is considered Vulnerable, numbering under 12,000 individuals. Threats include wetland loss and degradation in China and South Korea.
