Beginning notes: okay first of all I absolutely LOVE this request!! it was so much fun for me to write, and the perfect thing to help me gain motivation during my unfortunate current writing slump <3 if you ever have any other requests or ideas for me please don't hesitate to let me know! Shifts at the ER were always hectic, no matter what. And while Dana already knew how to keep things under control and running smoothly, it certainly didn't hurt to have a little extra help every now and then.
That's where you came in. It was as though your literal job description was "keep Dana happy and as stressed out as little as possible". No task for you was too big or too small, not if it meant helping her stay content. If anyone needed to find you, it was almost certain you'd be right there by her side. The only time you weren't was if she asked you to do her a favor.
"I restocked the supplies that were running low in each patient room," you announced after returning from the little "trip" you took around the hospital where you'd grabbed things from one of the storage rooms and distributed them to the designated areas. "Syringes, scalpels, fresh gauze. The works."
"Good. Did you direct the most urgent cases out in the waiting room in here after the last batch of patients were discharged?"
You nodded at the question, watching her look at something on the computer in front of her, reading glasses perched low on her nose. "Yes, ma'am. It's all been taken care of."
"For now," she added on with a wry smirk, removing her glasses and folding them back up before returning them to the pocket of her scrubs. Her mouth opened to speak again, most likely to give out praise for a job well done, but whatever it was got put on the backburner the moment Dr. Mohan approached; you both turned, immediately giving her your undivided attention.
"I need help figuring out a diagnosis for my patient," she explained at the inquisitive eyebrow raise sent her way by the charge nurse. "Everything we tested for came back negative, and everything seems to be clear and running smoothly, even though it's obvious something's going on." Mohan held out the tablet she was holding for Dana so she could look over the test results herself. "Whatever it is, we're not seeing it."
Dana turned her head back towards you and nodded in the direction she knew the chief attending physician had gone, trusting you to take care of it without question. "Go get Robby."
The words didn't even have to fully leave her mouth before you were obediently making a beeline towards the area she'd gestured to, collecting the doctor the same way a dog might fetch a pair of slippers for its owner. You returned with him mere moments later, sending him off after Mohan before you rejoined Dana at the nurse's station.
"Good boy," she affectionately praised now that there were no other current distractions, the corners of her lips quirking upwards into a faint smile at the way you preened at her words. If you were a dog, your tail would no doubt be wagging right about now, wildly thumping against the floor and probably knocking things over in the process. "I think we've earned ourselves a quick break. C'mon."
You followed after her as she headed outside, right on her heels the entire way. There was an extra sort of pep in your step when it came to this command in particular, because you knew exactly what it entailed. You didn't mind running errands, of course, but the time you got alone together was by far your favorite.
She had no sooner lit up a cigarette and started to smoke away when your face was pressed into her neck, your hands finding their way to her sides shortly after. She let out a low chuckle of amusement at your eagerness. "Well, I guess someone must've wanted a treat, huh?"
A noise resembling a playful growl escaped you at her words, your mouth placing sloppy kisses along the skin of her neck in response to the question. She took that as a yes.
Dana simply chuckled again and blew the smoke in her mouth out towards you, enjoying the way your nose wrinkled up slightly and your eyes squinted as you inhaled. "That's it, enjoy your treat," she hummed, checking her watch to see what time it was before returning her attention to the cigarette perched between two fingers.
She was fine with your touchiness, allowing your hands and mouth to wander with no problem. That's what you were out there with her for. Until she felt the grazing of your teeth across her throat, an action that wasn't permitted during your daily smoke breaks.
"Uh-uh, none of that," she lightly scolded, reaching her free hand out to lightly grab your chin, tilting your head up so you were looking at her. "You know better than to leave marks in such a visible place, especially at work."
You huffed quietly but knew better than to push it. She was right, after all. "Yes, ma'am," you muttered in response, your surprisingly docile nature only coming out like this with her.
"Good dog." Her hand moved to give you a pat on the head that was equal parts tender and condescending; you enjoyed it all the same. "See, you know how to behave. I think you just like acting out when we're alone and no one's around to witness how naughty you can get. No one would even begin to think about you acting like that with how well you usually behave."
It was true. You loved and respected her enough to listen while in public, but privately was a different story. What could you say, sometimes you enjoyed her putting you back in your rightful place.
This continued on for another few moments or so, your hands contouring themselves to the shape of her body as your lips mouthed greedily at her neck, only pulling away to inhale the smoke she blew out in your direction with nearly every drag taken from the burning cigarette. Unfortunately, it couldn't last forever, and it wasn't very long before she was checking her watch again with an acknowledging hum that you knew meant it was time to return to work.
"Break time's over," she stated while disposing of her cigarette, smirking at the whine you let out in protest. To everyone else, you were a fierce guard dog, but to her you were just an overgrown puppy. "Don't worry, you can have another treat later. I promise."
As you were making your way back inside, you heard what sounded like arguing between a nurse and a patient. "Just how much longer do I have to wait here, huh? My shoulder is killing me!"
As the nurse tried to calmly explain that the doctors were all busy at the moment, the patient spotted you and Dana walking by.
"Oh, what, so these two can just fuck off whenever they want? Aren't you supposed to be working right now?" He scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest (clearly his shoulder didn't hurt that much). "Y'know, it's my tax dollars that keep this place running! My injuries should get treated with a little more urgency than this!"
"Watch your mouth," you hissed out through gritted teeth, eyes narrowing as you glared the guy down. You'd already moved so you were beside Dana instead of behind her, your form blocking her from the patient. If there was one thing you wouldn't tolerate, it was someone not recognizing all the hard work that she did to keep things from going to hell in a handbasket, whether that be a member of the staff or just another patient.
He must've seen just how serious you were and quickly realized it wasn't worth the trouble because he grumbled something and turned to head back where he came from. It was hard to argue with someone staring you down so intensely, especially when that someone resembled a human form of Cerberus, guard dog of the Underworld (minus the three heads). You watched until he was gone from your sight completely before turning to follow after Dana yet again.
"I'm impressed," she remarked after a moment or so, eyeing you with a look that said you were almost certainly going to be devoured later once the two of you got back home. She found your protectiveness to be quite attractive, the same way you found her sternness to be. "I mean, I probably could've handled it, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have my favorite guard dog around to help."
"Anything for my favorite charge nurse," came your immediate response as you practically beamed with pride at her approval (and the just barely hidden glint of arousal in her eyes). "I can't let anything happen to you. The whole place would fall apart with you gone."
She let out a snort at your words as she approached the nurse's station once again, agreeing with what you'd said. "I can't argue with you there."
Your shift had been relatively uneventful so far, just the typical brand of chaos that came from working in The Pitt. Naturally, that meant something was bound to happen soon, and happen it did. All of a sudden, there was a loud crash as a patient tore through the area, Perlah and Princess both trying to wrangle him with no avail. Another nurse stood farther back where the patient had originated from, with what looked to be a bloody nose.
"Shit," Dana swore as she moved to help the nurse who was hurt; you trailed a little ways behind, keeping your gaze focused on the patient causing the trouble. Your body was tense and coiled like a spring, ensuring that you were between him and your favorite charge nurse at all times.
She slipped her glasses back on her face so she could better examine the nurse's injury, her offering help while the patient gave out more harm. Perlah and Princess had given up by this point, not wanting to get hit themselves, especially when he aggressively shoved a doctor who just happened to be standing too close, causing them to get knocked into a nearby wall.
Dana's head snapped up immediately at the action. "Hey! No fighting in my hospital!" The command rang out loud and sharp, like a bullet firing through the air. Everyone else was definitely on high alert now if they weren't already, both staff and patients alike.
Except for the patient causing trouble, that is. Wonderful.
All Dana had to do was shoot you a look, and you were immediately moving to restrain him, managing to get his arms pinned behind his back as you wrestled him down onto the floor. In the background, you could hear the fuzzy sounds of a doctor, probably Robby, shouting out orders about what to give him to knock his ass out, but your mind was elsewhere.
You felt a pair of eyes watching, and when you lifted your head you saw the approving gaze of Dana peering down at you from over the top of her glasses. She mouthed something to you, something that didn't have to be audible in order for you to understand it.
"Nice work." A proud gleam in her eyes when she mouthed again. "Good dog."
Oh, your nonexistent tail was definitely wagging now.
After being dosed with a medication to help keep him calm, the nurses were finally able to get the patient back to where he needed to be with no more trouble. Thank God.
"Well, that could've gone better," Dana began, rubbing her temple as she let out an exhausted sigh. "But it also could've been a hell of a lot worse."
You remained quiet, knowing that's what she needed at the moment, and simply observed as she checked her watch.
"Lena should be here any minute now to clock in for the night shift, and then we can leave."
No sooner did she say that did the charge nurse in question appeared, switching out with the day shift like clockwork. You and Dana grabbed the things you needed from your lockers and clocked out, heading for the exit.
"Do you need any help with your bag?"
A light scoff escaped her. "I can carry it, I'm not that old." Her hand found its way to yours, fingers lacing together. "I need a shower when we get home."
As tired as you may have been, that perked you up instantly. "Can I join you?"
She shot you a sideways smirk that said she knew exactly what you were thinking. "Always. After all, I did promise my good boy another treat, didn't I?"

"I'm looking for the charge nurse?"
"Oh, well, you found two of them! I'm Lena, this is Dana; I'm night shift going home, but Dana is queen of the day shift."
You watched the interaction take place with the typical flat, unreadable expression that was almost always on your face (unless Dana somehow managed to drag out a smile, which happened more often than most would think). The new nurse, Emma, glanced over at where you stood at the nurse's station, leaning against the counter and simply observing what was taking place. She seemed nervous, but you chalked it up to a combination of both first-day jitters and your intimidating form. Hey, you wouldn't make a very good guard dog if you came off as easily approachable, now, would you?
"Oh, and this is Dr. Evans, but most around here just use the term 'guard dog' instead. Either works if you need something," Dana tacked on as she gestured in your direction; you gave a nod of acknowledgement in turn.
Emma waved awkwardly at you and replied with a soft little "hi" as a greeting before looking to Dana again for direction on what to do next. You pushed yourself off the counter and followed a little way behind them as your wife showed the new nurse the ropes, staying far enough away so you weren't smothering them with your presence but still close enough to be able to keep an eye on them.
It was a bit strange, having such an intense character like yourself trailing behind them as though you were nothing more than an obedient lapdog, but Emma already trusted Dana despite barely knowing her, and it was obvious that Dana trusted you. Besides, you didn't seem particularly brutish, just a bit aloof. And as Emma would soon come to learn, aloofness was definitely a much preferable personality trait to some of the people she'd come in contact with during her shift.
As far as first days went, it certainly wasn't the best, but given your profession of choice things could've gone much worse for sweet little Emma. You were just happy she had someone like Dana looking out for her, and you as an extension of that.
When she saw you again, Emma expected that same kind of quiet yet focused attitude from you, but what she got was an actual conversation instead, one that helped to soothe some of her previously rattled nerves from the day before.
"You good?"
At first, she wasn't sure who was being spoken to, or where the voice was even coming from. Until she turned and saw you watching her with what could only be described as the kind of look a dog might give its owner upon realizing they were upset over something.
"O- Oh. Yeah, I'm good." She smiled and let out a nervous laugh, uncertain of the best manner in which to interact with you. "Just, um… still thinking about yesterday."
"I can see that." Your brow was pinched together in a look that almost seemed like concern, your gaze something akin worry. "Look, this job is tough. Anyone around here will tell you that. And it'll take everything from you if you let it." You paused, suddenly looking a little awkward yourself. "You have a good heart, from what I've seen of you. Don't let random assholes take away your ability to care." With that, you left, most likely returning to the nurse's station to find Dana (seriously, with as often as you stayed there you should be given your own little doghouse or something by that point).
Safe to say, Emma was speechless. She didn't expect to hear something so heartfelt and reassuring from the one person there who looked as though they could kill a man with a pointed scowl. It relit that spark within her, the one that pushed her into nursing in the first place, reminding her of all the good she could do with the tools she had available.
Dana looked up from the tablet she was looking over when the young woman approached, seeing that extra pep in her step that she'd had when they were first introduce. Part of the charge nurse was worried it wouldn't come back after the first day she had, so this was a pleasant surprise.
"Hey, sunshine," Dana greeted with a warm smile, peering over her glasses as she spoke. "What's got you all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning?"
Emma just gave a slight shrug, that gentle goodness that seemed to seep out of her every pore obvious from the soft yet determined expression on her face. "Oh, nothing. Just… someone reminded me why I'm here, and it's got me feeling extra motivated to help today." Her big brown eyes flickered briefly behind Dana to your unmoving form as you pretended to be busy looking over a patient file instead of eavesdropping.
Your wife noticed the glance thrown your way but chose not to mention it yet, though her heart swelled at the notion of you coming out of your shell some in order to help the new nurse feel welcomed and encouraged. "Well, whoever it was, I'm sure they must care about you very much," Dana replied with the utmost of certainty, knowing full well you were listening in.
And care about her you did, as Emma soon came to realize in the coming days and even weeks spent working in the Emergency Department. It wasn't any big or grand gesture that took place, but rather the occasional little thing that showed her you were looking out for her the same way that Dana was. The pep talk given was only the start.
Emma's stomach let out a low grumble as she sat at one of the computers at the nurse's station, filling out patient files the way that Dana had taught her to. She was starving, but she refused to take a break until she finished with what she was doing.
"You sure you don't wanna head to the breakroom real quick?" Dana questioned with a raised eyebrow, obviously having heard the sound of her fellow nurse's stomach begging for a snack.
"Oh, no, I'm good, I promise," Emma reassured with a smile as her stomach made another noise in protest.
"Hm." It was pretty clear just how little Dana believed her, but before she could fully turn on mom-mode and demand that she take a break, you appeared from seemingly out of nowhere with a small container of cashews in one hand and a bottle of water in the other.
"For you, my dear," you said while handing the items over to your wife, shooting a glance at where Emma was behind her as you did so. "Have you eaten recently?"
The younger nurse looked up with large eyes, like a puppy who's name was called. "Oh, um, no, not yet, but-"
Before she could finish with whatever sort of excuse was about to tumble out of her mouth, you reached down into the pocket of your scrubs and fished out a protein bar. "Eat," you commanded as you shoved it into her hand, leaving very little room for argument. "You need the nutrition. You can't keep running on a tank that's empty."
Emma seemed startled by the sudden snack that came with very strict orders attached to it, but simply nodded her head and began to unwrap the packaging on the protein bar, knowing better than to argue. She did have to admit, her stomach was a bit more settled after that.
"You know, you're kind of like Balto," she spoke up as you went to leave, not thinking much about her words. When you turned and gave her a questioning look, she cleared her throat and continued with, "y'know, Balto? He was a sled dog that took medication to sick children when no one else could do it due to all the snow. They, uh, they made a movie about him."
Dana let out a snort of amusement from behind you at the comparison, and the corner of your lips even tugged upwards ever-so-slightly. "Balto," you repeated thoughtfully with a nod as you turned again, now leaving for real. "Better than what some of the patients call me."
"They have rather colorful language, don't they?" the charge nurse tacked on as she watched you go, shaking her head fondly at Emma's words. "Balto. Personally, I like 'guard dog' better, but maybe I just enjoy the protection."
There was a smile on the face of her fellow nurse as she continued to eat her protein bar, a sense of pride about her at what she'd accomplished. She called the fearsome guard dog, Dr. Evans, by a nickname and lived to tell the tale. Best of all, you actually seemed to like it.
"Balto," she mumbled to herself through a bite of food as she went back to typing on the computer, a pleased gleam in her eye.
As time went on, Emma got pretty used to your presence, and was even sad when you weren't hanging out at the nurse's station like a dog begging for scraps of attention. She enjoyed the way you'd lightly toss a protein bar in her direction whenever she seemed hungry, or how you'd give her shoulder a gentle squeeze of acknowledgment after planting a kiss to Dana's temple when passing by on your way to a patient.
You were so much more patient with her than you were with most people, even the ones that you were close with. Any questions she might have that Dana wasn't around for some reason to answer, you did with no problem. You even continued to let her call you "Balto", giving a mean stink eye to anyone who dared laugh about it, though she soon earned her own nickname from the rest of the staff: "puppy", specifically the one that belonged to Dana and her guard dog.
After working in The Pitt for a while, she even started to ask you for favors, though it was definitely a nerve-wracking experience when it first happened. Dana did it all the time, so she figured what was the harm in her trying it out?
Then again, Dana was your wife, not to mention the charge nurse, and Emma hadn't even been working there for a year yet. But she mustered up the courage regardless, taking a deep breath before she approached you.
"Um, Balto? I mean, Dr. Evans," she quickly corrected herself, very much aware that if she wanted this to work, it'd be best to remain professional and stay on your good side.
"Mhm," you gave a soft grunt in response to her words, letting her know you were listening despite looking at patient forms on one of the computers there.
"Uh… I was just wondering, if… you could go get something for me?" She tried her best not to cringe at how awkward this entire interaction felt. "Um… my patient has some family members staying in the room with them right now, and there isn't enough chairs, so… so I was wondering if you could maybe grab a couple?"
You logged out of the computer and stood up straight at her words, giving a short nod before you turned and left. Emma just sort of stood there for a moment or so, still unsure if it was okay for her to do that. But she didn't have to think for very long, because shortly after you were returning with a chair in each hand.
She perked up instantly, standing up straighter upon the realization that you'd actually given in to her request. "Uh, this way, please," she directed you towards the room where the extra chairs needed to go, speaking warmly to the patient's family as you silently placed the furniture before leaving again. It turned out getting you to do things for her wasn't so difficult after all.
For other people wanting to use your specific skillset, however, it was certainly no walk in the park, even if you were like Balto. Like the one time Dr. Langdon got a bit too big for his britches and thought it'd be okay to boss you around like the girls did. The moment you saw him heading in your direction, you knew it wouldn't be an enjoyable conversation for either one of you.
"Hey, I need an extra hospital bed," he stated once he got to where you were standing with your arms already crossed. Dana and Emma were nearby, quietly watching the interaction take place.
"And?" Your tone was blunt and sharp, going perfectly with the usual attitude you displayed to everyone else.
Frank shifted uncomfortably where he stood, his confidence faltering. "Um… so… go get one? …please?" He said, his voice now weak and uncertain.
You just watched him with a look that could peel paint, your visibly displeased demeanor making him feel a little nervous. He glanced over at where Dana and Emma were now openly glaring, your wife with a hand on her hip and the puppy you'd adopted appearing ready to growl him out of the area.
"Uh… I'll just go get it myself," he muttered lamely while inching away, deciding that getting someone else to do labor for him wasn't worth whatever that weird confrontation was.
"Dumbass," you grumbled after he was gone, shaking your head before returning to work. Dana did the same, as did Emma, but not before the latter shot a defensive pout at his back as he left. Hopefully he learned his lesson about trying to butt in where he didn't belong.
Whenever Dana and Emma left the nurse's station for whatever reason, you always went with them, naturally. Sure, you were plenty protective before when it was just your wife, but now there was a new puppy to look after on top of it all, which made your guard dog instincts kick into high gear.
You were no less intimidating with your all-black attire and resting scowl, even with all the indications that you'd been "domesticated" by the two women in your life. Dana had her glasses in the pocket of your scrubs top, while your pants' pockets held assorted protein bars for Emma. There was a visible smudge of lipstick on your neck from your wife's kisses, along with the faint air of cigarette smoke that clung to your frame. On your wrists were more reminders of the puppy: a hair tie that you always kept on hand in case it was needed, and a bracelet that she'd made you herself, one that was adorned with the word "BALTO".
Your girls were important to you, and anyone could see it. Which is why you made sure to stay with them when they checked on patients, just to be on the cautionary side of things. After all, most people were much less likely to act out when they saw a figure looming nearby, a menacing and protective energy radiating from you, as though you dared them to step out of line. Any patient who started to become too aggressive quickly settled back down when their eyes caught onto yours, a shiver going down their spine at the way you simply stared.
And the patients that didn't notice you from where you stayed back? Well, they got the chance to meet you up close and personal. "Is everything going alright in here?" your voice would speak up when entering the room, making it well known to the patient that the nurses looking over them had someone watching their back. Then, if that still didn't work, you'd put your physical strength to use by restraining them while either Dana or Emma grabbed a sedative.
Perlah and Princess liked to joke that if you weren't a doctor, you'd be the perfect person to work for security, because nobody knew how to handle the unruly and restless like you did. Dana and Emma couldn't help but agree, even if they saw the docile person you really were beneath your outer layers. That was the very same person who convinced sweet Emma of staying in The Pitt as a nurse, and the same person who made Dana fall in love with you, the woman who was now your wife.

Beginning notes: another amazing idea that immediately had my creative juices flowing! I thought it would be cute to add some small moments with the reader and the pittlings since they're the ones who came up with the title of "dr. evans" in the first place <3 hope you enjoy!
"Um, Dr. Evans? Could I have your assistance, please?" the nervous voice of Dennis Whitaker called out upon realizing that whatever was wrong with his patient might be a bit too much for a mere student doctor like him to handle.
You'd been hanging out around the nurse's station, per usual, leaning against the counter as you lazily observed Dana filling out forms on one of the computers. "Coming," you replied as you pushed off the counter, shooting the charge nurse one last glance that said "don't move, I'll be right back". The corners of her lips twitched slightly, but she remained quiet.
Dennis wasn't the only one to call you "Dr. Evans" by mistake. Victoria Javadi, Trinity Santos, and Mel King also referred to you as such due to the way you always hung around Dana and how there was the occasional handsy moment that would warrant a scolding from HR if anyone told. Hell, even Samira called you it, and she'd been working there for years, long enough by now to know your real name.
You had no intention of correcting them; after all, why would you? There were worse things to be called, and besides, you didn't exactly mind having people thinking you were married.
"What seems to be the problem?"
While Dennis rambled on about the patient's symptoms and what he thought it might be, Perlah arrived at the nurse's station to watch. "Seems like your guard dog adopted a puppy."
Dana let out snort at her words, peering over the top of her glasses to where you and the med student stood. "Yeah, well, he's not to only one," she muttered lightly before nodding across to the other end of the ER.
Perlah turned and looked over her shoulder to see the others being gestured towards: med students Victoria and Trinity, plus second year resident Mel. "Looks like you've got your own little pack," she remarked before turning back again. "Do they still call guard dog 'Dr. Evans'?"
A scoff of disbelief came from the charge nurse, as if she couldn't believe being asked a question with such an obvious answer to it. "What do you think?"
"Dr. Evans!" another voice spoke up, carrying throughout the ER as Victoria scurried over to you and Dennis with a case file in her hands. "Dr. Evans, I was wondering if I could consult with you on my patient? Once you're done here, of course."
You just nodded, appearing relatively unfazed by the whole thing. After working in The Pitt for this long, not much surprised you at this point, and that included overly excited med students. "Sure thing. I just need to finish up with this, and then I'll be right with you." You instructed Dennis on what medications best to give his patient before turning and following after Victoria, allowing her to lead the way.
As you walked through the busy ER, you passed by the nurse's station where Dana still was, now with Perlah keeping her company. "Two seconds," you mouthed to your girlfriend as you held up two fingers to indicate you'd be back as soon as you helped Victoria.
The charge nurse merely smirked fondly and shook her head, clearly amused by the fact that you were currently running around with chores not given to you by her for once. Perlah was right, you really had adopted your very own litter.
By the time you finally returned to the nurse's station, Perlah was gone and Dana was standing there with an amused expression, as if she knew something you didn't. "Someone decided to leave a little gift for you," she mused while nodding to a lanyard hanging off the corner of the computer she'd previously when working at. Upon picking it up, you realized it was exactly like the ID you had clipped to your scrubs, except for one key difference: this one said "Dr. Evans" on it instead.
"Lemme guess, Dr. Mohan had something to do with it?" you asked while picking up the lanyard and looking it over. Samira often chatted you up when you both had free time, so you were relatively close. (That, or when you needed to hide from facing the wrath of Robby. While she took too long with patients, you sometimes skipped out on the job altogether just so you could spend more time with Dana. Safe to say, neither of you were in his good graces often.)
Your girlfriend just shrugged, though the look on her face told you everything you needed to know. "I think it's cute. My only critique is it not saying 'guard dog' instead of your first name."
"Haha," you gave a dry laugh at her teasing, unable to keep away a smile as you slipped the lanyard on over your head, adjusting where it rested on your neck. "How do I look?"
"Mm, so handsome." She leaned in to give you what was supposed to be a chaste kiss that lasted long enough for Trinity to let out a whistle from wherever she was. "Oh, hush," Dana scolded lightly after pulling away, causing you to let out a chuckle in response.
"You just like seeing your name on me as a show of ownership," you playfully accused while holding up the ID at the end of your lanyard. You may have been the guard dog, but it was obvious that she was just as crazy about you as you were about her.
"So what if I do? There's nothing wrong with that," she murmured in that low voice that she knew made you putty in her hands, kissing you again. Your own hands found their way to her waist, pulling her in closer and deepening the kiss. Unfortunately, this didn't last for very long before there was another, sharper whistle, this time coming from Frank.
"Aw, damn it," Dana swore as she broke off from the kiss, shooting the resident doctor a glare as he grinned impishly. "Guess we'd better get back to work so we won't have to worry about attracting an audience."
"That's okay. We always have tonight," you reminded while letting go of her waist somewhat reluctantly. You shifted where you stood so you weren't quite as close in an effort to not be tempted to pull her in for a third time.
"Mm, that we do." Her eyes roved over your body momentarily before quickly snapping back up again, already beginning to redirect her focus to work. That was one thing you loved about her, the way she could go from flirty to serious at the drop of a hat. To you, it was incredibly attractive.
Your thoughts were rudely interrupted, however, when you heard the sound of a very frustrated Robby calling out your name. Your actual name, not guard dog or Dr. Evans. Uh oh.
Both you and Dana turned as he approached, already beginning to give you a stern talking to on spending too much time at the nurse's station again instead of taking care of patients, and how there was a line in the waiting room that needed getting through.
"Wait, who's Dr. Robby talking about? I don't remember a doctor by that name working here," Mel spoke to no one in particular, brow furrowed in confusion. The other Pittlings looked just as lost as she did.
Princess, who'd been standing nearby, pointed to you. "It's the guard dog's actual name, though no one ever uses it." She paused before adding, "except for Robby when he gets in this kind of mood."
There was a collective "ohhhhhh" let out at that as the group realized they'd never heard your actual name before. Not that it mattered, as nobody ever really called you that, like Princess said.
You just stood there with your arms crossed as you allowed Robby to vent whatever sort of frustrations he had at the moment, not that you were listening very much, too focused on what Dana was doing to care. What could you say, you were her guard dog, not his.
Once that was over with and you'd promised to see at least two more patients before the end of the day just to get him to leave, you instantly returned right where you belonged, which was by the charge nurse's side, hovering nearby as she worked. "Y'know, it doesn't sound like such a bad idea," you spoke up suddenly, trying to seem casual.
She raised an eyebrow at your words, seeing through your act immediately. "What doesn't sound like such a bad idea, actually examining patients for once?"
You snorted, shaking your head before giving her a reply. "No, not that. I meant… the idea of us being married, at some point."
She stopped what she was doing completely and gave you her undivided attention, studying your face intently to see if maybe you were joking. You weren't. "If this is your idea of a proposal, I've gotta say it's not very romantic."
Your hand reached out for hers, bringing it to your lips so you could place a tender kiss to her knuckles. "Marry me, Dana," you breathed out in a soft whisper, giving her your very best set of puppy dog eyes.
Of course she couldn't say no to you, not when you looked at her like that and spoke so sweetly. "Really? You're gonna propose to me here, in the middle of the ER, during yet another hellish shift, without even giving me a wedding ring?" Her words didn't match the tone she spoke with, her voice wavering slightly as her hazel eyes pricked ever-so-slightly with tears, though you could tell she was trying her best to not let you see it.
Your thumb brushed affectionately across her knuckles as you continued to hold her hand in yours, still watching her with that puppy dog gaze. You knew what her answer was already, but you still wanted the confirmation. "Is that a yes?"
A huff of laughter escaped her, and she shook her head slightly, as though she thought you were ridiculous for even asking. "Yes, of course, yes-" She'd barely finished the sentence before your lips crushed together for a third time, neither of you certain who initiated it or went in first.
Her free hand moved up to cup your face while the other one laced through your fingers and gave a gentle squeeze. Very faint teardrops managed to slip down the sides of her cheeks due to just how emotional she was feeling. And this time when cheeky whistles filled the air, you didn't pull away.

Beginning notes: why hello there! it's not too long at all, so no worries 🥰 thanks for the wonderful request, hope you like where I went with it!
It was certainly no secret to anyone who worked in The Pitt that there was some kind of tension between you and Dana, even if it was never fully addressed. In fact, it was so well known that not only was the day shift aware, but the night shift was, too.
You always seemed to listen to her commands more than anyone else, including Robby, and he was your superior. Anything you could do for her to make things easier, you did it, no questions asked. And while yes, you showed the same kind of respect and willingness to help with the other nurses, it was pretty clear who your favorite was.
Dana, meanwhile, was just as enamored with you as you were with her, though she did her best to keep it a bit more discreet. Even then, she couldn't help the way her eyes would roam over your muscles whenever you lifted something heavy, or stop the snorts of laughter that always managed to escape her at your sarcastic comments.
Despite this, neither of you had made any direct moves towards the other, always skirting around the actual topic of dating and quickly changing the subject whenever someone else brought it up. You both seemed to think that the other was only looking for a casual friendship instead of a deeper connection, which held you back from taking it a step further.
It drove everyone else crazy, because they could see the obvious love shared between you, they knew the tension was more than simply platonic, and yet you couldn't even see it for yourself. This only ended up changing when the jealousy simmering in a certain charge nurse became too much for her to ignore.
You were used to being flirted with by the occasional patient. Hell, it was pretty much always a guarantee that it'd happen whenever Myrna was there, though you'd learned by that point to ignore it. Usually.
That specific day in question, there was one flirty patient in particular who just wouldn't let up. If you were close enough for them to rest a hand on your arm, they would. If they saw you passing by their room, they'd feign their injury suddenly hurting more than it previously had been so you could check it over. And whenever another doctor arrived instead, they complained about you not being there.
It was starting to get a little out of hand, especially when they slipped a piece of paper into the pocket of your scrubs, which you later found out had their number on it. You weren't quite sure how to feel, other than mildly impressed at their dedication (even if it was a tad bit obnoxious).
You weren't the only one feeling less-than-pleased at these events, however. Dana tried to remain focused on her work, did her best to ignore what was happening, but she wasn't blind. She could tell just how infatuated they were with you, and it made her stomach churn uncomfortably.
"Do they really need to be checked over again?" She scoffed, shaking her head when said patient called out for you once more when seeing you pass by their room. "That's the third time this hour."
Perlah and Princess shared a knowing look. They were well aware that what she was feeling wasn't mere irritation over a patient taking up too much of a doctor's time. She was upset because the doctor in question happened to be you.
In another part of the ER, a betting pool was starting to see if you'd flirt back or even agree to a drink. "Ten bucks says it's a sure thing within the next hour," Robby said while holding up the exact amount of money.
"You're on," Frank seconded while reaching into the pocket of his scrubs to pull out a ten dollar bill of his own.
"Oh, I think it'll take a little bit longer than that," Jack mused. By this point it was late enough that he'd come in for the night shift. "I've got twenty that it won't be until tomorrow that a date is set up, if one happens at all."
"Are you kiddin'? No way 'guard dog' says yes to that at all, no matter how long it takes," Cassie spoke up with a light scoff, shaking her head at the mere notion. "I'll put in fifty on the whole thing being forgotten as soon as the patient leaves."
"What's going on over here?" Dana's voice cut in, causing all four doctors to tense up, like naughty children being caught with their hands in the cookie jar.
They all threw out their own version of the word "nothing", lamely making excuses for other places that they needed to be before scattering. She simply watched the event take place with a raised eyebrow and an unimpressed frown before turning and heading back over to the nurse's station.
Dr. Heather Collins saw the whole thing go down from afar, and waiting until everyone was gone before she decided to approach you herself. "Hey," she greeted, leaning against the desk you were sitting at as you attempted to fill out patient reports. "Got a second?"
"Mmph," you grunted in response, not looking up from the computer screen but also not telling her to leave. She took that as a sign to continue.
"Y'know, a lot of people are talking about that attention-seeking patient of yours. The one that can't go for ten minutes without calling you in to help with something."
"Oh, really?" Your tone was dry but not entirely surprised at the information. Gossip moved fast around PTMC, especially in the Emergency Department where you worked.
She nodded and tipped her head to the side, watching for your reaction as she spoke. "There's even a betting pool going on, to see how long it'll take you to crack and give in." Heather paused, her voice quieter and more inquisitive. "…are you going to? Call them, I mean."
"Why, do you have a lot of money riding on this or something?" You sarcastically replied while leaning back in your chair and crossing your arms over your chest, finally looking up at her. You were trying to put off the demeanor of a person who remained unbothered, but she could tell that you were feeling a little defensive at having so many people interested in your social life.
"God, no." She shook her head and rolled her eyes at the notion, pushing herself off the desk and slipping her hands into the pockets of her zip-up hoodie. "I just- I don't want you to feel like you have to do something you don't want to just to make them happy."
Your posture untensed ever-so-slightly as you seemed to be considering her words. "Yeah, alright. Fair enough," you muttered in response before uncrossing your arms and sitting back up again, turning your attention to the patient reports on the screen in front of you once more.
The next day, everyone was more than just a little curious on what'd happened that night after you'd left from work. Did you decide to join the patient for a drink after all? Had it gone further than that?
You were never the kind of person to go on and on about what you did outside of work, but it appeared as though your lips were sealed especially tight this time, though why exactly remained to be seen. Still having quite a bit of money riding on this from the bet that took place the day before, your coworkers attempted to subtly pry the information out of you. Or not-so-subtly, in Frank's case.
"So…" he casually began as he leaned on the counter by the patient board, either not noticing the heavy sigh you let out at his sudden appearance or just ignoring it altogether. "Do anything fun last night?"
"Not particularly." If there was anyone who you'd go out of your way not to give a straight answer to, it was him.
Undeterred by your obvious lack of interest, he cleared his throat and tried again. "No, I meant, like- did you do anything after you left work?"
"I know what you meant," you shot back instantly, feeling a bit snappier than usual. He held up his hands defensively at the glare sent his way, getting the feeling that maybe now wasn't the best time to press you.
"Okay, okay, got it, jeez," he muttered before picking a patient up on the board at random so he'd have an excuse to make a quick exit. You continued to give him that same grouchy look even as he left. Stubborn jackass.
"Well, someone definitely wasn't happy to see him," Dana spoke up as she arrived back at the nurse's station. She was trying to act normal, even though the voice in her head screamed at her to question you about your night just like he had.
Your gaze softened almost immediately when you noticed her, going from snarling beast to docile pup in record time. "Am I ever?" Your words were clearly meant to be sarcastic, but it was hard for you to remain as gruff as usual with her around.
"So…" she pulled her glasses out of the pocket of her scrubs and slipped them on, pretending to busy herself with one of the patient charts as she spoke. "Not to be nosy, but did you do anything last night?"
The question earned a dismissive shrug. "Eh, I went out for a drink or two, but that's about it. Nothing special." You were being honest; you really hadn't done anything more than that. Before she could say anything else, however, a team of paramedics was rushing in with a gurney, and you quickly went to help them.
Your answer didn't leave her feeling very satisfied. If anything, it only raised more questions. And she wasn't sure if she was going to end up liking the answer to them.
"Hey," a soft voice said from nearby, low and soothing. She looked up to find Dr. Collins standing there. "You okay?"
Dana nodded, doing her best to put on a friendly smile. "Yeah, I'm good." It was difficult, trying to appear so unbothered when she felt as though she was going to be swallowed whole by her jealousy. She could feel it underneath her skin, affecting her like poison. You with another person, talking, laughing, happy--it was all she could think about, and she hated it.
Heather didn't seem very convinced, but she knew better than to push, so she simply reached over and gave the charge nurse's hand a gentle squeeze before leaving her alone to her thoughts.
Why did it hurt so much? Why was she consumed with such grief, for lack of a better word, over this?
It wasn't just a silly little crush, that was for certain. Nothing as small and unimportant as that could cause her such despair. And the more Dana thought about it, the more and more that she realized why exactly she was feeling this way.
She loved you.
The revelation was both incredibly startling to her and yet not surprising at all. Nothing else made sense the way that this did. You'd successfully stolen her heart, and even though it was causing her pain to imagine you with someone else, she wasn't sure if she wanted you to give it back.
This whole ordeal was starting to give her a migraine, so she decided to take her morning smoke break early, needing to do something that'd help to clear her mind of it all. She'd only taken about two or three drags from her cigarette when you showed up.
"Hey," you tentatively began, sensing the tension built up in the woman in front of you. "Can we talk?"
She let out a particularly aggressive breath of air, purposely blowing the smoke that had been in her mouth in your direction. You didn't even flinch. "About what?"
"You know what."
Dana scoffed and turned her head away from you, gazing off at nothing as she clutched onto her cigarette so tightly part of you was worried it might get crushed in her grip. "What, you wanna talk about the date you had last night?"
The bitter tone in her voice was glaringly obvious, and she might as well have had a neon sign flashing over her head that said JEALOUS. "I didn't have a date last night," you smoothly replied as you leaned up against the brick wall next to her, torn between being concerned over her obvious frustration and amused at just how worked up she was over something that didn't even happen.
Her gaze flickered to you again, her side eye glare almost causing you to laugh. You held it in, though, figuring she probably wouldn't appreciate the way you found humor in the situation.
"Hmph." She simply gave a grunt in reply, and judging by her silence she clearly wasn't sure how to respond. Was there really any way to backtrack here? She didn't think so, and neither did you.
"There's a reason why I turned them down," you continued after another moment or so. "It's because I promised myself that I'd never go out and have drinks with anyone after work as more than just friends until I asked you first."
That confession caused Dana's heart to stutter in her chest, and her to nearly drop her cigarette in disbelief. A startled "what?" was all she could choke out.
"Yeah," you confirmed, appearing a bit sheepish as you awkwardly rubbed the back of your neck. "I just- from the moment I first met you, I thought you were amazing, but… I don't know, I guess I was too nervous to say anything. And then I really got to know you, and I wanted to ask you out even more, but by that point we'd become friends, and I didn't wanna make things weird between us if you said no." You shrugged, looking down at your shoes. "I didn't tell you that I hadn't gone on the date at first because… well, I guess I just wanted to see if you'd care. Pretty stupid of me, I know. I just didn't think it'd upset you this much."
To say that she was flabbergasted would be an understatement. There were so many thoughts racing through her head all at once, but she tried to collect them before responding. "Very stupid," she agreed while stubbing out her cigarette. "Not your best move, trying to intentionally piss off a charge nurse."
Before you could give an apology, she was already moving forward, her lips meeting yours in a passionate embrace. You were a bit surprised, but quickly regained your bearings as you kissed her back. She tasted like nicotine and coffee, a combination that you didn't realize you loved so much until now.
"But I forgive you," she finished her previous thought once she'd pulled away just enough to be able to speak, her lipstick staining your lips in a way that you never wanted to wash off. "Just as long as you understand that from now on, you're mine, okay? No more funny business."
"Yes, ma'am," you obediently replied, feeling a bit lightheaded from both the kiss and how sternly she was speaking to you. Turned out that Dana being possessive was far hotter than you realized.
But you didn't care, because in the same way that you'd stolen her heart, she'd stolen yours. And unlike her earlier musings about being unsure of whether or not she wanted hers returned, you were certain in the fact that you never wanted her to give yours back.

"Are you okay?" You questioned after the patient had been successfully subdued, watching her with a concerned gaze as you examined the mark on her neck.
She nodded her head in response. "Y- Yeah, I'm- I'm okay." Her heart was hammering rapidly in her chest, and her throat felt rougher than before, but other than that she was fine, courtesy of you.
The rest of her shift she spent glued to either yours or Dana's side, clearly worried that something would happen to her again if she was left alone. Neither of you minded very much, as she was quiet and didn't get in the way.
That wasn't the only time she stuck by you, however. Emma began to follow you around in general after that due to how safe she felt with you, not to mention the slight crush she may or may not have gained after having you save her. Dana noticed the way her protege appeared to have grown a little sweet on you with the way she avoided making direct eye contact and was typically shyer whenever you spoke to her.
The charge nurse thought it was cute, and after all, she couldn't really say that she blamed her. She wasn't blind; Dana was well aware of just how attractive you were. Hell, it was one of the reasons why she married you in the first place.
And since Emma was doing so well around the Emergency Department when it came to taking care of patients and completing odd jobs, not to mention your previous heroic action, she decided a reward was well deserved for the two of you. Beginning notes: this is later than I planned on responding, but here you go! I love this idea so so much, and I sincerely hope what I wrote is everything you wanted from it 🥰 (also I specifically chose this gif because I thought it'd be funny hehe)
Everyone had bad days at work sometimes, but when your job was in healthcare they always managed to be ten times worse than the typical spilling your coffee or wearing your shirt inside out. Between patients, their family, and fellow coworkers things could go from being mildly annoying to catastrophically upsetting in a mere few seconds. Which is exactly what the topic of discussion was at the Pitt Crew cookout you and Dana were attending.
Everyone had been going around, sharing "war stories" and describing the events of their worst days of working in the ER. You just listened for the most part, already aware of the tales being told but finding them amusing regardless.
"Well, I'm not so sure about everybody else, but my first day was pretty bad," sweet and sensitive Emma spoke up as she sat in her fold-out chair next to you, glass of lemonade held carefully in her lap. "I mean, one second I'm checking on a patient, and the next thing I know he's got an arm around my neck, trying to strangle me."
"You're not alone, kid, trust me," Dana replied with a shake of her head from where she sat on your other side. "I got a black eye and a bloody nose just because of some impatient asshole who couldn't wait his turn like everyone else."
"Would you rather have that, or be stuck with having your shithead of an ex for a patient?" Cassie questioned rhetorically with a raised eyebrow, not elaborating any further than that but also not needing to.
"Exes are pretty bad, but at least he was only there for that one day. Meanwhile, I have to deal with my mom showing up in the ER whenever I so much as breath wrong," Victoria said with a slight shudder, the older redhead sitting beside her reaching a hand out to rest on her shoulder as a comforting gesture.
"You think that's bad?" Trinity scoffed after taking a swig from her beer. "My first day, I literally dropped a scalpel into someone's foot. It was mortifying."
"It couldn't have been that bad, considering you slept with her after that anyway," Dennis muttered under his breath, causing his roommate to give him a hard smack to the shoulder. "Ow! What was that for? You know that I'm right."
"I, uh- I didn't get assaulted, but being sued wasn't a super great thing to experience," Mel awkwardly chimed in, fidgeting with her own glass as she recounted the memory. "I- I mean, it definitely could've been worse, though. I- I'm not trying to discredit anyone else's experiences, or anything like that."
"Does it still count as a bad day experience if it always happens?" Samira mused while inwardly pondering over her own awful days. "Because my mom calls the hospital asking for me all the time, though it was only once where she actually managed to cause a panic attack."
You found yourself increasingly enjoying the conversation taking place, not because of the fact that said bad things happened, but rather how everyone was able to voice them like this, so freely and open. Two notably silent members were Robby and Baran, likely because neither wanted to recount dealing with a mentor's death or experiencing unexpected seizures in such a casual setting.
"Hey, dude, didn't you get shot?" Frank piped up suddenly, unable to resist or stop himself from asking the question. "Because I remember that one time--it was totally crazy, you guys wouldn't believe it," he began to explain to the younger ones there. "This lady came in, gun in her purse, threatening to shoot Robby, and at the very last second--boom! Guard dog leaps in and saves the day, taking a bullet to the side in the process. It was insane."
Trinity nearly choked on her beer, while the other four (Victoria, Dennis, Emma, and Mel) just sat with wide eyes and jaws agape. Each one wore a varying expression of shock, clearly unable to believe that such a thing had taken place.
Never one to let others speak first, Trinity managed to snap out of it the quickest, directing her attention over to you. "No way did you get shot."
"That sounds incredibly dangerous. I can't believe someone was able to get a gun past the metal detectors," Victoria voiced with a worried tone.
"Yeah, that must've been awful," Mel agreed, her fidgeting having gone from calm to almost frantic as her fingertips tapped nervously against the glass she was still holding, clutching it tight. "I can't even imagine having to worry about a weapon like that on top of everything else."
"Are you okay, though? I mean, you lived, obviously," Dennis added, torn between concern and awe that you went through something like that and lived to tell the tale.
"I'm sorry somebody did that to you, Balto," Emma muttered softly, big lamb eyes staring intently in your direction, as though she were trying to ensure you weren't still somehow hurt. "That must've been awful."
"Yeah, it was pretty bad," you stated bluntly, finally beginning to address the elephant in the room. "Just ask Dana. She nearly had a heart attack when she first found out about it."
"You're damn right, I did," the charge nurse confirmed without missing a beat, shaking her head at the memory. "Jesus, I get that you're the ER's resident 'protector', but I think Robby could've handled it himself."
"No, he couldn't have," you instantly responded in an unconvinced deadpan. "Part of me thinks he wouldn't have even gotten out of the way if I didn't move him."
"Are you saying that I wanted to get shot?" the man in question butt in, voice full of disbelief. "Jesus, I might be 'mentally unstable' according to everyone else, but I'm not insane."
"Debatable," Dana muttered at his words, her eyes twinkling with mischief as she teased him. The look he gave her of faux betrayal made it all worth it.
"Can we see your scar?" Trinity blurted out, unable to hold herself back any longer. It was obvious that the other Pittlings and your pup were all wondering the same thing, though none of them had the balls to say it like she did.
You simply shrugged, not seeing any harm in indulging their curiosity. "Sure, why not?" Rising from your seat, you handed your drink off to Dana and lifted your shirt up just enough to reveal the scar on your torso. It was round and matched size of the bullet that hit you, the skin there discolored and rougher than the rest of the area.
The little pack that belonged to you all gathered around, each one curious about it despite themselves. They each studied it in awe, unable to fully comprehend that such a thing took place despite the evidence being right before their very eyes.
"That's badass," Trinity piped up, her lips tugged upwards into a childlike grin at the sight before her. When several coworkers shot her a questioning look, she doubled-down and defensively continued with, "What? It's true."
"I've gotta agree, it is pretty cool," Dennis admitted, though it was done slightly more sheepishly than his counterpart.
"I always thought the worst thing an irate patient could do was sue you for medical malpractice," Mel muttered to herself, pushing her glasses up on her nose when they began to slip down some. "Not this."
"Well, at least you got a cool story out of it," Victoria chimed in, trying to look on the bright side. "And if you had to deal with my mom, you were lucky enough to be unconscious while she expressed her disappointment towards your actions, unlike some of us," she added under her breath.
"I'm just glad that you're okay," Emma said in a way that was so soft and caring it made your heart melt. "I mean, I just don't know what I'd do without your presence in the ER. None of us would."
"Alright, alright, enough before you get this old dog all misty," you lightly protested while dismissively waving your hand before it moved to give the young nurse's head a comforting pat. "I'm not going anywhere, I promise. Even the worst work days ever couldn't keep me down."
"I'll drink to that," Frank piped up while raising his beer, everyone following after with their own glasses of assorted beverages. Even though the prospect of you being in such grave danger had initially caused your little pack anxiety and fear, they ended up seeing it as a great relief to know that nothing could ever keep their guard dog down, no matter what that might be.
End notes: i forgot to add joy but i dont even know if she'd be up for a team bbq anyway knowing her. the next day at work the pittlings are talking about it and she's like "guard dog got shot??" and guard dog confirms it by showing her the scar and she's just like "huh. neat" before going back to (avoiding) work lol
