Did some research about the iPad storage stuff- you may have already tried/seen this, but one thing that was recommended was offloading unused apps, which gets rid of them to clear space but keeps the data and stuff intact.
Also if you go to the iPad's storage settings it should give you a rundown of everything that's taking up space, so you can look through that and see if there's anything you can/want to get rid of
