Happy Purim, all! Slightly belated by a few days, but I got this post done, hey. Like I do every year, here are some pictures of my shaloch manot, the gifts of food I gave to family and friends.

This year I made candy apple cinnamon hamentashen (candy apple jelly and a few pinches of cinnamon in my dough), which were truly delicious. I also made cherry brownies - dark chocolate brownie mix with dried cherries and a teaspoon of berry schnapps. Mmm. I also included pink lady apples, and I even found butterfly-shaped gummies! 🦋

I again made cards with my butterfly stationery (of which I have enough for years), and also used my iridescent plastic bags (ditto, lol) for the candy and wrapping the plates. Found some neat sparkly plates, too.

I hope those who celebrated had a fun and joyful holiday, and I wish I could share my treats with everybody! 🥰💖🎉

So unfortunately I have three (teeeechnically four) exams this week, meaning I didn't have time to bake hamentashen/Khameneitashen this past weekend.

This is especially unfortunate because I had an idea. Personally, I think this idea is completely brilliant, but I could be wrong.

Imagine using puff pastry instead of hamentash dough, and then spanakopita filling inside. Or different bourekas fillings.

I'm usually a more savory snack enjoyer so I'm kind of heartbroken that I won't get to put this idea to use this year, but I'm curious as to what y'all think.

The puff pastry may lack the structural integrity of the usual dough 🤔

For anyone curious the Jelly Tarts from The Dragon Prince, are a real desert. They are called Hamentashen, and they don’t have to be filled with Jelly, they can also have a poppy seed, date, fig or chocolate filling, (at least those are the most common I’m sure there are more) and they are delicious.

And here are some I made with my family, it’s really not hard to make:

As you can see I’m not much of a baker, but they did taste good.

They are eaten on the Jewish holiday of Purim.

Hamentashen!!!

the Best Recipie Ever (in my opinion)

Cut one seedless orange into quarters and place, skin and all, into a food processor. Process until fine.

Add 12 ounces pitted dates and 1 1/2 cup raisins. Process until combined, about 30 sec.

Scoop out filling into bowl and scrape the sides of the food processor clean-ish.

Cut another seedless orange into quarters and, once again, process until fine (skin and all).

Add 2 eggs, 3/4 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup avocado oil (you can use other oils but I think avocado makes it taste the best) and process until combined.

Add 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour and 2 teaspoons baking soda and process *just* until combined. Any more than needed and it will get all tough and chewy.

Turn dough out onto a floured board (it will be quite sticky), and, with floured hands and a floured rolling pin, roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness.

Using a floured cup with a flat, 3 inch diameter top, cut circles out of the dough and line them up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once you’ve used up all the available dough, combine the scraps and reroll. Repeat until as much of the dough as possible is used.

Put a small scoop of filling on each circle and fold/pinch/shape into little triangles with a bit of the filling showing at the top (it kinda looks like a pirate hat)

Bake in the oven at 350 for about 25 minutes, or until the corners are just browning.

I found 2.5 pounds of Manischewitz Hamentashen at Costco. Which means I now have sooooooooooo many Hamentashen. Will they last until Purim? Maybe. Maybe not.
