I have been working with a book collector since last year. He has the most amazing private book collection I have ever seen (even some XVII century books that relate to my current MLit dissertation, so I’m drooling over them--not literally, of course). This is the first book I had to restore for him: Nueva Ancora de Salvación (Buenos Aires: Editorial Augusta, 1948). It only has sentimental value, but isn’t that the most important one, after all? It’s his grandmother’s little prayer book! (A small 20th century book of hours!) At first I thought it was a much simpler work, but I ended up having to resew it all over again because it had a lot of single leafs that needed to be reattached. One of the things I loved the most about the process is that once I took the covers off I discovered this wasn’t its original binding. On the inside of the cover there were extracts of an Argentinian newspaper dated Buenos Aires, June, 1959 when the book was actually published in 1948. I love it when the structure of books tells you about its history! The owner was eager to have it back because I took a little bit longer than I had originally planned, but at the end they were super happy with the result and that is the best kind of reward. / Desde el año pasado estoy trabajando con un coleccionista de libros que tiene una de las colecciones privadas más maravillosas que he visto. Este es el primer libro en el que me tocó trabajar: Nueva Ancora de Salvación (Buenos Aires: Editorial Augusta, 1948). ¡Es el libro de oraciones de su abuela! En un comienzo pensé que el trabajo iba a ser mucho más simple, pero resultó que tuve que desarmarlo por completo y volverlo a coser ya que tenía muchas hojas sueltas, rotas y mal pegadas por alguien que había intentado rearmarlo anteriormente (¡con colafría!). Una de las cosas que más disfruté de este trabajo fue descubrir que esta no era su encuadernación original. Al retirar las tapas me percaté de que adentro tenía extractos de papel de diario de 1959, cuando la fecha de publicación del libro era 1948. ¡Es muy bello cuando la estructura de un libro te habla de su historia! Ambos, el coleccionista y su abuela, estaban ansiosos por recibir el libro de vuelta ya que me tomó un poco más de tiempo del que originalmente planee, pero estuvieron muy felices con el resultado y esa es la mejor de las recompensas.
