I am more than this body. I am more than just a girl upside down. My value is not defined by whether I can make a shape or not. And yet, I love to make shapes upside down. And I love the physical practice of yoga. It’s just that it’s not all of who I am or what my practice is. My mind and soul are deeper than the pose. I know yours are too. Asana is not a pass or fail spirituality test. Asana is a tool that can be used for growth and evolution. But, like any tool, it can also be used poorly. The spiritual path is not all smiles and sunshine. Sometimes it’s about boundaries and saying no. _ When I first started practicing I said yes to everything. I had to learn how to say no. I wanted to be that easy going “cool” girl who was down with anything and everything. But then I learned that a true yes is only possible once you learn how to say no. _ It’s not easy but clear honest communication is a skill that yoga can help with. Of course we can only ever communicate to others what we clear about within ourselves. If we are deluding ourselves, then we can easily fall into a trap of self-fulfilling delusion. And we are all deluding ourselves somewhat (because we aren’t fully enlightened!). That’s ok. _ We are all doing the best we can at any given moment. _ It’s scary to say no, but sometimes necessary. Especially as a woman, I have so much pressure to say yes in countless uncomfortable circumstances in my life. Even though I’m married men approach with all sorts of offers or another. What often happens when I say no (as kindly as possible) is a backlash. Despite the fear of what might happen I’ve learned how to say no. Do you save the best for last or dive right in to your favorites? _ I used to always hold out on something on I wanted because I thought I’d enjoy it more later. There were so many years where no matter how much I smiled I was miserable inside. There were so many times I tried to be who people wanted me to be. There was a knot of irresolution inside myself that I just couldn’t run away from or cover up. That tightness sabotaged so much. _ After years of practice, deep personal growth work, a lot of meditation and a good serving of Grace, I can say something big has shifted. _ I smile from a place of deep peace. I still sometimes get my feelings hurt and feel rejected, but I do not need anyone’s approval to be myself. I am who I am. _ I have learned that what matters is to do the right thing, the good thing, for its own sake, not as a performance, or to gain approval, but just because it fills your soul. At the end of the day, there is no escaping who we are. Did you know that how you set up your shoulders in Downward Dog will determine whether or not you have good shoulder alignment in handstand? It’s always all about the basics. _ Turning the shoulders inward sets your body up for a big misalignment. Hyperextending the shoulders set up your body instability. Finding that sweet spot in between is where it’s at. Just enough external rotation to keep everything lined up. My teachers used to tell me, Kino, you have to be stronger. I was never naturally strong and they kept pushing me to lift up higher. But the lesson was never the lift up. The lesson was always about spiritual strength. I needed to learn what true strength means. _ Here’s what I’ve learned. _ 1. Be strong enough to remain calm amidst adversity. Sure when everyone loves you it’s easy to feel self-assured. But when you’re hated and ridiculed, judged and tossed aside, it’s harder to stay the course and believe in yourself. How you face failure and not getting what you want tells a story of strength more than who you at the peaks of success. _ 2. Strength is humility. You don’t get something just because you want it or think you deserve it. You have to work tirelessly, without attachment or expectation and never give up. It’s not over when you think it should be, when you’re tired, frustrated or just plain over it. It doesn’t matter how sorry you feel for yourself. Strength is about putting in the work, whatever that work is, no matter how long it takes. _ 3. Strength is falling 1000 times and picking yourself up each and every time, blaming no one and nothing, just finding a way to make it work with the cards you’ve been dealt. _ This has been my journey. These have been my lessons. I’m still learning. I’m still on the path. How strong do you need to be? As strong as it takes.
