Another drawing from #mermay that finally got colored. I should probably take a watercolor class one day soon. As it stands, I feel like every new painting is an experiment. I can’t seem to fall into a rhythm. Maybe if I made all my characters’ colors flatter…Oh well. Ever onward.

Jasy Jatere

“The Bargain”

Jasy Jatere is a Guarani monster that looks like a yellow-haired child with a golden staff. He lures kids into the forest while their parents are taking their siestas and often (accidentally) kills them.

We were sitting around the campfire one night and I asked my Paraguayan harp teacher Antonio about Jasy Jatere. He said he and his brother were told the story to keep them from wandering off during siesta, but they were so horrified by their parents’ tales that while their parents napped they ran into the forest  to hunt Jasy Jatere down and kill him. So I guess the lesson from that story is cautionary tales are kind of hit and miss. Don’t lie to your kids, folks.
