I don't just obsess about I1(I-M253) haplogroup because I have it, but also because it is the only major European Y haplogroup which we can't trace back much further than just 4000 years. It is a great big question mark and its rise and origin are integral to another big question - where did Proto-Germanic come from? Proto Germanic language itself emerged after the complicated genetic mixing event that led to the rise of I1 after the end of Battle axe period (2300 BC) but before the Nordic Bronze age (1700 BC). Although Proto-Germanic itself probably wasn't spoken before 750 BC at the earliest. So the Nordic Bronze age culture was not strictly Germanic in the linguistic sense although it is clearly Germanic in the genetic sense and, as my latest documentary about stone ships clearly shows, the Germanic religion has direct continuity with the NBA religion - evolving straight out of it and preserving many elements of it. Linguistically the NBA culture may have spoken several late IE languages/dialects, which could have been closely related, or may have been quite divergent if they derived from the very distinct IE cultures (R1a Battle axe, R1b Single Grave/Bell Beaker and mystery I1 source) that blended to form the Germanic people just before the NBA.
Haplotypes a group of genes in an organism that is inherited together from a single parent. Haplogroup is a group
Haplogroups
-- humans can be divided into about 100 haplogroups
-- each haplogroup is made up of a mixture of haplotypes
-- haplotypes share substitutions that define the haplogroup
-- defining substitutions enable the evolutionary relationships between haplogroups to be worked out
-- can be pictured as a network
-- empty nodes represent haplogroups that are unknown in the human population
-- all human haplogroups can be linked in a single network
-- age of a haplogroup can be linked in a single network

Europe genetics according to dominant haplogroup.
Distribution of haplogroup Q-M242. There seems to be a connection between the Ket People living in that dark pink area in Siberia and the people of America.
Distribution of R1a Haplogroup.
