Derek watches in unrestrained awe as Stiles pops the cap of his marker, winks at Derek as he ducks his head, tugs Derek's arm close. Derek inhales sharply as the marker runs along his skin, Stiles drawing intricate lines and loops that look like nothing, but Derek knows will come out beautifully.
It's been tradition every week since their first study period together that Stiles draws on Derek's arm. Sometimes it's his wrist, or his fingers, and one time, one achingly glorious time, his neck. Derek couldn't breathe with Stiles so close, glasses bumping Derek's as his fingerless gloves dragged over Derek's jaw, mouth parted in concentration so near to Derek's. Often, it's random patterns, swirls, slogans, band names, cartoons, always with Derek's permission, which he finds oddly sweet. He'd expected Stiles to be terrifying to talk to in person, ripped clothes and bright pink mohawk, his forearms covered in actual ink Derek couldn't help but stare at. Stiles had caught him, smirked and beckoned Derek over. Derek's mom would actually kill him if he ever thought about getting a tattoo. Stiles tells him his dad would have, if they hadn't made a deal-- something about his mom having had them at a young age and being fiercely enthusiastic about Stiles expressing himself-- Derek had listened, but he'd watched Stiles' arms and mouth with total fascination at the same time. It's an obsession he wishes his cheeks wouldn't give away, and could hide behind his math book, instead.
"Thanks," he stammers.
Stiles trails his fingers up the black lines of a lightning bolt, smiles fondly at Derek, "Suits you."
Derek ducks his head, traces his own finger along the lines, and their fingertips meet when Stiles deliberately runs his own along the same side. Stiles hooks his finger round Derek's, pushes his glasses up and wets his lips.
"You make me nervous, you know," he says after a moment.
Derek blinks owlishly at him, "I do?"
"Yeah, it's crazy, I'm not normally... I just plough into everything no holds barred, mostly but..." he strokes his thumb across Derek's palm. "I wanna like... do you right, I mean, this! Shit," he runs his free hand through his hair, his own face flooding with colour, and Derek suddenly feels a whole lot warmer. Something good and excited is settling in his stomach.
"Me too."
"What, really?" Stiles gestures at himself, "But, I'm... you can't take me home to meet your mom."
"Sure I can," Derek shrugs, "If, we ever, you know."
Stiles grins, "You wanna go steady with me? Go on dates?"
Derek scowls, tries to draw his hand away and the ink smudges along the desk, "If you're gonna mock me--"
"What? No! I was being serious," Stiles winces, rubs his thumb through the smudges on the table. When he scratches his nose, the ink comes off and makes him look both ridiculous and adorable. It's hard to be cross when faced with it. "I was trynna be... formal and ask right."
"Oh," Derek tugs his sweater sleeve over his fingers, scrubs at Stiles' nose lightly, "Yeah, okay, I'd like that."
"Sheesh," Stiles says teasingly, "No need to get formal on me, nerd."
