In the seconds before the earthquake, the long-haired twit who lived above John hollered for John to hold the elevator door, and John obliged.

The bloke came tumbling in, a bustle of limbs and movement and, most immediately, noise. He apologized, and in the same breath, thanked John for “saving his ass.” John did what he always did when it came to these uncomfortable rides with this certain tenant (who insisted on filling every second of their elevator ride with talk); he smiled politely, then settled on the other side of the elevator and waited for this 45-second elevator ride to be over, and for John to be released onto the fourth floor. 

They had just passed the third floor when the whole building shook. 

“What the--” John exclaimed and his hand shot out to steady himself against the elevator wall. 

And then everything was still.

Too still. 

The lights on the elevator turned off.

Dear god, no. 

John did what any bloke would do in this situation. He lurched toward the button and smashed his finger against the number four. He looked up and pressed it again, but there was no reaction, not from the numbers panel and not from the elevator. 

“Goddammit,” he hissed.

Rubeus towered over the other first years. He shifted uneasily at the back of the group knowing that he stuck out like a sore thumb. He felt like a beast on display at a menagerie. He stared fixedly at the stool with the patched and frayed hat, ignoring any looks cast in his direction. Suddenly, the hat split at the brim and it began to sing:

Gryffindor, my owner, and one of founders four

Whose chivalry and loyalty he truly did adore

Did love to teach those students of red and gold

He would often say that luck favors the bold

Resourceful Slytherin had his very own plan:

To accept ambitions students into his green clan

He taught them about loyalty and also to be shrewd

He honored the heritage of those it was a certitude

Hufflepuff the dedicated worker and kind to all

Made a home welcome to anyone, you will recall

Ravenclaw a woman most curious and creative

Taught students research solo and collaborative

Intelligence sparkled from her bright, sharp eyes
