Don’t Look Back in Anger

    Genevieve was used to this. Walking into clubs and bars and having rockstars immediately put their eyes on her. She had been in situations like this since she was 17. She was originally from Texas. A southern drawl keeping her tied there. Her parents had a heavy hand in her love for music, specifically rock music. When she was little her mother and father would come back from errands with a new record, they would call her over to the record player and put it on. From a young age she felt the music in her bones.

     When she was almost 17 years old she left home for Los Angeles California. She would sneak her way into places like the Whisky A Go-Go and Filthy McNasty’s. The musicians there adored her. She would sit and talk to them for a while then they would run off to a hotel room or an apartment. This night was no different than any other. It had been 5 years, she was 22 now, of the same old same old. Sneaking away with a lead singer or guitars, a bassist or drummer here and there and never seeing them again. The most she had been with the same band was when she went on tour with them which wasn’t often. 

     “Oh man, look who it is.” Jimmy Page patted the shoulder of the bassist of some up and coming band from the Midwest who had just played a show at the Whisky. “Who is that?” He asked. “You haven’t heard of Genevieve?” Jimmy was bewildered, everyone knew her, well at least they thought they knew her. “No, I’ve never heard of her.” The bassist replied. “Everyone adores her. The best girl to have on your arm for the night.” Robert Plant replied, stirring his drink. “Ole Pagey here has been trying to tie her down for a while.” 

     “One night wasn’t enough.” He responded, his eyes never leaving her. “So what, she’s a groupie?” The bassist didn’t get it, she was THE groupie. “No, no, no. Listen, Genevieve does what we’re supposed to do, she gets what she wants and tosses them aside, leaving them craving more.” Robert clarifies. “The girl is more powerful than any drug I have ever taken and that is saying something. I think I might love her honestly.” Jimmy stared at her, admiring her beauty. 

     “Why not just call her over then?” The bassist asked. “She won’t come over to me, she got what she wanted from me.” Jimmy shook his head. “Just do it anyway, who cares.” The other boy shrugged. Robert sat back with a smirk on his face, ready for Jimmy to be shut down like he did the countless times he sent flowers to her apartment door. 

     Genevieve heard someone call her name through the haze of the music and people. It was Jimmy Page. Again with this one. She thought. She was going to wave him off but then she saw a mess of dusty brown hair paired with an attractive face next to him. She walked over. “Hi Genevieve.” Jimmy pulled her to sit at the table with them. He tried pulling her onto his lap but she slid herself off. She made small talk with Robert and his wife Maureen until Jimmy came back from the bar with a drink in his hand for her. 

     “So Jimmy, were you gonna introduce me to your friend here.” She gazed up at the bassist. “I’m Johnny Dillon.” He told her about being the bassist in his band and sort of confused her with his Midwestern slang. “Where are you from, you talk a lot.” She asked, cocking her head and looking at him through her eyelashes. Which made Jimmy Page slightly jealous. “I’m from Michigan, Detroit actually, well actually not Detroit but Hazel Park it’s just north of there.” He rambled. “Uh huh.” She giggled. 

     They did a lot more talking and then Genevieve asked the question everyone she talked to begged to be asked. “How about we go somewhere more private?” Johnny nodded and they left. Robert laughed as they walked away, throwing an arm around his wife and taking a sip of his whiskey. “Send more flowers Pagey.” He muttered a “shut up” back and scowled into his cigarette.  

     Genevieve and Johnny were making out on her bed. “What do you do to make them want you?” He asked, pulling away, breathless. “It’s just my charm.” She shrugged. “Jimmy was saying something about being in love with you and Robert said something about Jimmy trying to tie you down. What were they talking about?” Johnny asked. “They think they know and love me when they don’t.” She said bluntly. 

     “They think that because I tell them where I’m from and what my favorite song by them is that they love me, well let me tell you something Johnny Dillon! They don’t know me and they don’t love me, I lie to them, I make myself pretty for them, I tell them anything they want to hear and they believe it! I leave them wanting more and more because it’s fun for me!” She yelled at him, getting up from the bed. Johnny sat, blown pupils and mouth slightly agape. 

     She starts to leave but Johnny grabs her hand. “I can’t do this anymore, it doesn’t feel right!” She cried. “It’s okay, I’m gonna tell you something now.” He comforted her. “Don’t put your life in the hands of a rock n roll band, they’ll throw it all away. You gotta do what you can for yourself.” He held her shoulders and looked in her eyes. 

     She carried that lesson with her all her life and she never showed her face at any of those clubs again. Instead she followed her passion, music and all three of her albums won platinum.

A beloved hamburger joint in Hazel Park is picking up the pieces after a police pursuit that started in Warren ended in destruction on Wedne

HAZEL PARK, Mich. (FOX 2) - A beloved hamburger joint in Hazel Park is picking up the pieces after a police pursuit that started in Warren ended in destruction on Wednesday morning.

Staff inside the 24-hour restaurant Brayz Hamburgers were filling orders when a vehicle chased by Warren police crashed into the building, closing it for the indefinite future.

Local perspective:

Paul Mirdita is furious with the way his Wednesday has gone. What is normally one of his busiest days on 9 Mile and Dequindre turned into a giant mess as he picks up the pieces from the beloved restaurant in Hazel Park.

"This is a stupid, man. This should never have happened," the co-owner said.

Brayz Hamburger has operated for 80 years. But longevity counts for nothing when a wild police chase ends with a fleeing vehicle crashing through the front door. 

"Could’ve been eight dead people now and my bread and my butter are closed down for what? For a stupid car that you could work and save your money and buy," Mirdita said.

To add insult to injury, the business has a colorful paper now decorating his front door from the city warning it is unfit for human occupancy due to the damage.

Rewinding the clock to before 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Warren police received a report of multiple Kia vehicles being stolen from the Lafayette mobile home community near 8 Mile and Warner.

Warren police chased the stolen Kia westbound on 9 Mile, blowing a red light before colliding with a white Lincoln and crashing into the restaurant. 

Four people were arrested and a loaded handgun was found in the stolen car.

The restaurant owner is upset with the thieves. But he's also irritated with police for continuing the pursuit.

"Let the car go -who cares? It is not worth it. You’re putting people’s lives in danger. And who did it? The police. I’m sorry, it is what it is," said Mirdita.

The other co-owner, File Mirdita, said those working at the time were scared by what happened.

"My employees were terrified when they left. They were all shaking and it was heartbreaking," she said. "It was so sad."

Remarkably, there were only minor injuries after the incident. But it will take longer than the day to get things back up and running.

"Now I’m closed on one of my busiest days and I have people to take care of and pay and bills and taxes and nobody gives a sh*t," said Paul.

Nestbox update - House Wren

After no adult bird came to feed the Wren babies for almost 24 hours, we thought and pondered all day and then took them out the nestbox and brought them to a rehabber (Wild Wings in Hazel Park, they will be happy about donations, it is how they finance their good work). They were nine days old yesterday, not ready to fledge. The day before, the parent had fed them almost every 5 to 10 minutes, then suddenly nothing. The camera takes videos when there is motion or sound. It did not malfunction and I checked the clips as well as the livestream regularly to make sure. I did not want to see the babies die in the box, and I think waiting until the next morning would have sealed their destiny.

No adult bird has returned to the nestbox since. There are strong little birds and I hope they make it. Birds have a rough life, and unfortunately it happens that baby birds lose their parent/s too soon. The good thing is that there are licensed rehabbers who will take them in and care for them until they are ready to fledge.
